Pacov's place to enjoy the show.

So, during the (12 day or so) downtime with the MP servers, I decided to give LoL another go and have been enjoying myself.  I'm glad DG is back up and running, but the break was enough for me to try another competitive DoTa style game and start to enjoy it.  This thread isn't about bashing DG or any nonsense (so don't ffs).  Its simply a place for those of us that play or have played DG and now play LoL as a main or occasionally to discuss the game and keep in touch.

So - chime in here if you have been playing LoL with your experiences or whatever you want to chat about.

I'll get us started.  I've been enjoying the F2P aspect of LoL quite a bit.  Remember WAAAAYYYY back when favor points in DG meant something?  Eg - remember playing games and looking forward to unlocking a favor item you wanted to try out?  It's like that all the time with LoL (well, it will be for quite some time anyway).  You get IP (favor points) for every game you play.  You can shell out some money if you really want to buy all of the characters, etc (the temptation is always there for the quick win), but you can also just play for fun and earn enough IP to unlock a new char, etc.  It's been very satisfying for me slowly earn enough IP to try out a new character, etc.

As it stands, I'm ok with 3 characters (card guy, silv, and viking pants - there are so many char it takes awhile to learn all the names).  I'm ok early, decent mid game, and utter SHITE late game with my characters.  It seems very diff from DG in that respect (if we are kicking ass early/mid, you can't harass like a god late game - that's gotten me killed more than a few times).  There are ALOT of reasonable builds (from what I can tell).  I started by trying out many diff char vs ai to learn them (that's why I'm like level 12 with "13 wins" or so).  Then I learned you get more IP from playing against humans, so I just switched up.

Anyway, I think the game is fun now and I'm looking forward to the new domination mode (it's a Demigod knock off imo) that is essentially holding points to get bonuses from what I understand.  Hearing about that mode is pretty much exactly why I started playing.  Oh, and pretty damn close to 100% of games end because another team beat you - not because someone dropped.

Anyway, I'm going thru a learning curve.  I play with folks that are "experienced" and I often think they are retarded after my impressive 40 games or so (vs their 500+ games).  The strats often sound idiotic to me.  But that said, I fell into line in a game with jon, paint, obi, and 2 of jon's clan mates tonight and we scored a win when i thought we were done.  My biggest weakness (I think anyway) is not knowing what folks can do with their characters... I think there are like 70 char... as a new player, you have NO IDEA what each char can do until you play them or play against them enough... and that will take some time.  Anyway, I'm pacov on LoL if you play and want to add me as a friend.  I'm not exactly good, but I probably won't lose you the game at this point.  We should organize some LoL games and some DG games.  Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you.

Carbon - so here are the possibilities:

You are bad at dominion
Everyone you get matched with is crap (and you are good/decent)
Random crappy odds
If you think the problem is lousy teammates - we can fix that.  If you think your strat is crap, we can fix that by playing some games in vent.  All of that said, some people just don't like certain modes and that's all there is to say.  I've never played a single game on the 3v3 lol map because the folks I play with hate it.  Could be I'd love it, but I haven't given it a go.

Anyway, I'm sure we are all happy to help out.  Pugging in dominion is ok for me (because I go strong FU character AKALI for this mode). If I played anything but a gank player, I would ALWAYS want to play with folks I know.

Im sure Im not great at it yet. I just came out.

And its not so much my team sucks it just every PUG game I play devolves into a FFA. Pure Chaos.

For a team based game this new model sure does promote the army of one mentality. Which is why I guess my teams lose.

And your right if your not pure DPS gank or just pure DPS, there no point in playing. With the Crystal Scar Aura it really screws with my builds.

Now that Ive had my emo rage post, I can say I really really want to like dominion. On paper is great fun. But playing PUG's....its the worse thing ever.

I actually find that its easier to make up for bad teammates in Dominion.  Just yell at them to either be back dooring or defending, neither of which are hugely difficult.

The key is that the number of viable champs seems to be much lower on Dominion.  The difference between top tier champs (Rammus, Jax, Garen, Akali being up there) and lower tier champs (Nasus, Veiger etc) is much bigger than on Summoner's Rift.  So pick a good tanky DPS and you can do quite a bit just by yourself as long as you stay active.

High mobility champs are good, long range champs are good, combinations of the two are just awesome.

I've been running Kog and can almost make up for an entire team of feeders with long range artillery shots to keep them from converting.  They tend to spread out so I can mow them down one at a time while the others attempt to restart the takedown.

It's going to be a while for the slower segment of the community to discover that ranged defense isn't done by standing next to the tower, but by smacking them from afar right when they start taking it down.  It will probably be even longer before they figure out that trying to convert the tower when someone is about to attack is a bad idea.  I'll rack up some pretty nice kill counts till they do.

I knew DOTA and it's clones were popular but I thought people would be put off by the communitys horrible attitude and teamplay in general. Am I the only one who doesn't like teamgames?

Is DOTA II an obvious upgrade for you?

What about everybody else that has posted like crazy here?

I just came out.

What did your folks say?

on Sep 28, 2011

heh... doggu.  The difference between you and me was that I only thought of that wisecrack.

Had some god awful games with Karl last night.  1 game we just got worked (completely idiotic team comp because we got an olaf that wanted to jungle so we lost our amumu).  Karl was solid at least, but the rest of the team... not so much.  The last game we were up like 17 kills or something and managed to lose because folks had no interest in watching the map and defending.  In hindsight, I should have just gone back to assist and ignored everyone that should have went back (but did not).  Instead I'm just pinging asking the right folks to head back.  Smeh.  In the future, I'm just going to go back on defense even if I'm the carry or a tank - you never know what type of players you are going to get in a pug.  Sigh... just needed 1 person with half a brain to consider going back to base.  Also that last game started getting some weird lag that made things very difficult towards the end - pacov = suspicious, but oh well.

Some people are put off by the community.  That said, there are tools within game that can mitigate crappy attitudes (eg you can always easily mute someone).  To be fair, though, even in my pugs, I end up with like 1 guy that is annoying once every 10 games or so.  And even then, its just some 13 year old idiot, so I really don't care (and could just mute if I wanted to).  I play whatever role well enough at this point where I'm never really insulted by my team, so the only hazing might come from an idiot on my team directed at someone else or someone on the other team being a douche.  In either case, I just report them at the end of the game and trust that the person will eventually get their account banned if they keep it up.

Am I the only one who doesn't like teamgames?

Nope.  I personally get more satisfaction anymore from playing in some sort of team game instead of SP (though I still love SP games) -  even if team game just means co-op, etc.  The best part about playing in team games, though , is when you get to play with your pals.  That's the nice thing about lol for me - a huge chunk of the Demigod community moved over to LoL after quitting Demigod, so I get to meet up with folks I used to play with, etc.  Nice to have some continuity from game to game.

Pacov - the man with the game(obsession? ). What is it you like so much about League of Legends?

Oh, I don't super like League of Legends.  I spend quite a bit of time playing it and its growing on me, but I'm not a huge fan of the meta game.  I do like the diversity of characters.  I do love that it gets constant support and there is no real end in sight for that support (this is a HUGE bonus to me).  I do like that I earn points for every game I play (win or lose) that I can use to unlock new characters or runes.  I do like that it takes a bit to get to level 30 so that you have plenty of experience by the time you are ready to play ranked games.  I do like that 99% of every game I've played has begun within 2 minutes of me queuing up for a game.  I like the connectivity scheme as well - if you crash or disconnect for whatever reason, you can reconnect to the game.  I love the meta game and characters in demigod much more, but LoL has everything else that I could want even if I like the meta less in it.

Campaigner
Is DOTA II an obvious upgrade for you?

No idea, tbh.  I might hate it utterly.  The thing with Dota 2, if I understand it correctly, is that its really just Dota 1 updated with current gen graphics/connectivity, etc.  This means that if you are a pro at Dota 1, then logically you are pretty great at dota 2.  The downside to this is that there will be folks with years and years of experience when the game comes out.  Obviously that experience is a huge leg up compared to newcomers.  Anyway, its definitely something I will at least try.

I was just thinking about trying out Kog as well in Dom.  I think he could be quite useful as well.

I had to read that 5 times to get what you meant. English really needs a way of emphasizing a term without inverted commas.

on Sep 29, 2011

Well - I finally hit level 30.  Just tweaking out my owned runes a bit (by a bit, I mean for like the next month - heh).

Played my first draft pick game - a bit surprised that I've only done one of those.  Think I might play more in the future.  Does anyone know what determines who the team captain is?  For instance, the game I played, zen was the captain.  He hosted a game and it was just me and 1 other guy in that lobby before we hit the queue (so there were 3 of us total queued - with zen being the host).  Is there any reason (outside of host) that zen was chosen to be the captain?  Is there any way to control where you end up picking?  Eg if zen hosts a game and we have 5 people total, then queue up, am I just put somewhere at random in the character selection process?

Anyway, I mostly just tried out characters and strategies in bot games yesterday.  Nothing super exciting, but I'll likely start with some ranked games soon after a few more draft pick games to get more familiar with how things go.  Oddly, haven't had much desire to play dominion lately.

There is an advanced logarithm that determines the sexiness of a players name. If you queue up with Zenny you'll never be team captain as Zen God is about as sexy of a handle as one could get. In all seriousness there was a pro Urgot on the other team that single handedly won the game for the other team in the only draft game I ever played and he wasn't captain so I don't think it's the highest level player... As far as Dominion goes I think they missed a big opportunity. They should have given five unique "favor" type items for each team. One item good for tanks, one good for supporters, so on etc. That way they would have had a way to make certain roles have a place in the game without trying to balance everything at once. Oh well... Just hope they don't screw up the regular mode for the sake of trying to balance dominion

Question:  do you get more ip for ranked games?

on Oct 01, 2011

You dont get more IP for ranked.

on Oct 01, 2011

Would 1 or 2 of you guys post a list of characters that are good to know how to play and generally useful by the time you reach 30? I think around 7 or 8 would be a good amount for starters as I'm not playing that much.

Cheers.

@Pacov  Sorry bout the last game man... that was frustrating.  It really wasn't as bad as it seemed... damn Ashe survived some crazy tower dives early but oh well.  After some research, I think the problem is I overcompensate when I'm mid and try and "round" Annie out by using defensive runes and masteries.  Its the damn Demigod habits!  Its so hard to resist stacking health... but the best defense nukers seem to have is the fear of getting... well, nuked I guess.  The reason I do so much better with Urgot is he is pretty good rounded out with some tankiness to go with the AD.

tl;dr I'll play better next time.

I personally think knowing how to play galio well is a huge bonus.  No one seems to ever pick him in the games I play (this means you can almost always use him in draft mode.  So, right there, you have a player that can stand up well in a lane solo and provide solo crowd control for group battles (and even snag some kills if your opponent is fail).  But most importantly, he's a decent support tank that you can almost always choose.

I'd just take a few days figure him out (always go top lane - if there is a jungler, you will solo). Here's a guide that covers my build for the most part.

Thunder - no need to apologize.
