Pacov's place to enjoy the show.
Feel free to jump in and discuss lol even if you aren't Demigod alumni

So, during the (12 day or so) downtime with the MP servers, I decided to give LoL another go and have been enjoying myself.  I'm glad DG is back up and running, but the break was enough for me to try another competitive DoTa style game and start to enjoy it.  This thread isn't about bashing DG or any nonsense (so don't ffs).  Its simply a place for those of us that play or have played DG and now play LoL as a main or occasionally to discuss the game and keep in touch.

So - chime in here if you have been playing LoL with your experiences or whatever you want to chat about.

I'll get us started.  I've been enjoying the F2P aspect of LoL quite a bit.  Remember WAAAAYYYY back when favor points in DG meant something?  Eg - remember playing games and looking forward to unlocking a favor item you wanted to try out?  It's like that all the time with LoL (well, it will be for quite some time anyway).  You get IP (favor points) for every game you play.  You can shell out some money if you really want to buy all of the characters, etc (the temptation is always there for the quick win), but you can also just play for fun and earn enough IP to unlock a new char, etc.  It's been very satisfying for me slowly earn enough IP to try out a new character, etc.

As it stands, I'm ok with 3 characters (card guy, silv, and viking pants - there are so many char it takes awhile to learn all the names).  I'm ok early, decent mid game, and utter SHITE late game with my characters.  It seems very diff from DG in that respect (if we are kicking ass early/mid, you can't harass like a god late game - that's gotten me killed more than a few times).  There are ALOT of reasonable builds (from what I can tell).  I started by trying out many diff char vs ai to learn them (that's why I'm like level 12 with "13 wins" or so).  Then I learned you get more IP from playing against humans, so I just switched up.

Anyway, I think the game is fun now and I'm looking forward to the new domination mode (it's a Demigod knock off imo) that is essentially holding points to get bonuses from what I understand.  Hearing about that mode is pretty much exactly why I started playing.  Oh, and pretty damn close to 100% of games end because another team beat you - not because someone dropped.

Anyway, I'm going thru a learning curve.  I play with folks that are "experienced" and I often think they are retarded after my impressive 40 games or so (vs their 500+ games).  The strats often sound idiotic to me.  But that said, I fell into line in a game with jon, paint, obi, and 2 of jon's clan mates tonight and we scored a win when i thought we were done.  My biggest weakness (I think anyway) is not knowing what folks can do with their characters... I think there are like 70 char... as a new player, you have NO IDEA what each char can do until you play them or play against them enough... and that will take some time.  Anyway, I'm pacov on LoL if you play and want to add me as a friend.  I'm not exactly good, but I probably won't lose you the game at this point.  We should organize some LoL games and some DG games.  Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you.

Skarner looks fun to use.  I don't really even care if he's supposedly UP, I like his style so I might buy him.

@Pacov  Yeah... I like your friend, seems a cool guy.  Just a bit... well, he's just got the dreaded Its Always My Teammates/Champ Suckinesses Fault attitude thats not going to let him get much better I'm afraid.

I consider myself a patient guy and was looking forward to helping him learn the ropes, but it was a little frustrating.  I don't mind losing at all, but jumping from game types over and over when I'm trying to explain the meta strategy of 5v5 classic Blind Pick doesn't help.  I'm thinking to myself that I'm barely capable of playing Draft Mode myself, so why are we playing that when he's level 18? I can't help him understand different roles of champs if he keeps picking different ones each game and playing them like a Tanky DPS no matter how squishy they are.

@Rune Gambling Addicts and Saving All My IP For When I Reach Level 20 Hoarders

Not a big fan of either method.  A extremely cheap T1 rune that is a good Primary rune like Flat Armor or Magic Penetration is way more useful than a 375 IP random t3 rune that may or not be useful... probably not useful.  Theres a lot more piece of crap runes out there than not.  And buying cheap T1 runes that help you win will help you get more IP so you can buy as many or more T3 runes when you reach 20.

you jackasses. My Skarner

I've been thinking about buying him too >> - planning how much Riot Points I should buy <<

I have a lot more fun when winning with him than Avinia - his ultimate is just so much fun and he's /so fast ah mg/. However, I do think that Anivia is more fun early game and more rewarding. Just Skarner is way more fun when he's fed.

And thunder, I do have T1/T2/T3 runes. All my slots are full. I default to useful T1 runes first, then I gamble.

Also 3.18 beta patch notes:

I wouldnt worry too much about runes.  And I wouldnt buy anything other than T3 runes when you hit 20.

Really, you can get by with a basic set of flexible runes.  So get:

Armor Pen reds, Magic Pen reds, Mana /5 /level yellows, and flat CDR or flat MR blues, plus flat health quints.  You might need flat armor yellows to jungle with some champs.

With those runes you are going to be able to play most champs very close to ideally.  Yes, there are some champs which want very specific runes and you might need to get somewhat specialized to properly jungled some champs, but you can worry about that later.  If you get the basic t3 runes above you can do what needs to be done with most champs.

Plus, unless you have quite a few runes pages, its not worth getting super specialized to play a specific champ unless you plan on playing them A LOT.

i generally agree - was fun to gamble with 375 ip though.  Think its a good strat if you are lower than 20.  Quite awesome for someone new to the game imo.

...

Cost for a T1 Armor Seal +0.78: 15 IP

Cost for a T3 Armor Glyph +0.7: 205 IP

Cost for a T3 Armor Glyph +0.7: 375 IP gambling price

Cost to combine two worthless Secondary Glyphs to get a T3 0.16 Cooldown Reduction Mark: 750 IP

Cost to combine this Cooldown Mark with the .06/Lvl Attack Damage Seal you got the same way: 1500 IP

But don't worry, you've finally got a great rune!  0.93 Critical Strike Chance Mark.  Too bad your favorite champs are AP Casters. Too bad your 1500 rune would cost you 410 if you waited.  Too bad its not much good to you in the meantime until you have enough rune spots and mastery points to make a Crit Strike build assuming you're not really just into Mages.

on Oct 14, 2011

@Thunder: Or you can be like me and get a 1000 IP and an 820 IP rune as your T3 :3

Also also I have like zero bandwidth ah mg, so I won't be able to play so much. I'm going to be going to the coffee shops some and we'll see if I get get LoL to work on WINE and bear playing it on my notebook somehow - crycry.

---

Since DoW's patch notes makes me rage I probably won't be playing that over the next month or so, so I figure this'll be my competive online game I've been missing for awhile, so I'm more considering plopping down some cash for RP. Mostly to save IP for runes because ah mg.

Though I'll probably still preorder SotS II for offline single player play. And I have Disgaea IV to play.

---

Riot knows how to price their RP just to be annoying though. Seriously, it's redic. I want 3x 975 RP champs but then... there is no way to fit that into a $20, because you need like 150 more points, THEN you are like "oh but buying $5 of RP is such a terrible waste of money, so I might as well go get the $35 deal".

THEN you have all this leftover points so you're like hmmm well this Skin looks alright, but THEN you don't have enough RP for all the Skins you discovered.

Then you're like OH BUT I NEED RUNE PAGES.

Fuck me.

---

Anyway, for the purpose of discussion and dismissing all your monetary and playing advice because I can, I'm thinking:

$35 pack + $10 pack == $45 for 6380

- Skarner + Runetech Skin == 1950

- Renekton == 975

- Twitch == 975

- Anivia Runetech Skin  (I'm a sucker for steampuck fml). == 975

- 2x Rune Pages == 520

(I currently have Cho'gath and Anivia unlocked thru IP).

That leaves me with a few hundred left over. Just enough so that if I something /I must have/ comes out, I buy the $5 RP pack and have exactly 975, so enough to get whatever it is.

On the other hand it's like "oh $5 more and get the $50 pack, and get 780 points more points, which is cheaper than $5 later on for 650!". Which I could get another Rune page + the purple Cho'goth skin (because Purple is way better than Red, but that skin is so overpriced for just a palette swap).

And it's not like I'm really strapped for money that badly anyway.

Then I get to focus on spending my IP for runes, not champions.

Though my IP list would just be:

- Teemo - 1350

- Warwick - 1350

- Kog'maw - 6300

- Ramnus - 3150

- XXX 450 IP champions so I qualify for Draft.

- Would probably grind out an IP rune page after this point

Mostly just to round out my champion stable (with stuff that could actually lane bottom).

Since I'm pretty interested in the champion and laning meta right now actually, even though I'm worrying about that a little too early at this stage (baby hedgie).

However, I'm not sure how necessary those Rune pages are, especially while I don't have anything to really put in them. But I'm such a terrible min-maxer that just "reading" this

Plus, unless you have quite a few runes pages, its not worth getting super specialized to play a specific champ unless you plan on playing them A LOT.

Makes me cringe. How on earth could you let yourself have an inferior rune selection, crycry. Even though runes aren't even that big of a deal in the scheme of the game itself. It's the concept, man, how could you let yourself not be the best you could be.

I just found an interesting thing in LoL. My friend was refering other players to play LoL and at 10 successful referals he got additional 975 RP, so "sort of" free RP. Invite your friends

There are more prizes, but I doubt it is easy to get them... More details here:

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/referrals/invite

Tier 3 champ = 975 RP.

my gameslist will show you:P

Sounds like I'll have to take a look.  I'm pretty sure they are going to release a character called Zen God, though, so I suppose you'll have to change up then.

@darkliath - here's some more details on the referral system (I looked into it back when I signed up a few of my friends).  You get a small ip boost in every game for every friend you sign up (its like 6-9 ip per person).  Whoever you refer has to reach level 5 before you get any perks or they "count" as referred.  I suppose you could uber refer yourself (create alt accounts), but that sounds like way too much work.  Anyway, if you have some pals that you can get to play up to level 5 at least, you'll def get the ip bonus each game.

@Hedgie - here's what I'd recommend for RP purchases - go ahead and drop $50 - if you are considering dropping $35 (especially knowing that you'll likely want to buy up skins), you're almost guaranteed to drop $50.

If you decide you want to buy champs using RP, wait for sales if possible.  Seems like every 1-2 weeks, they put a grouping of 3 or so champs on sale.  So, instead of like 925 RP or whatever they are 450 RP or so.  When I picked up vayne, I bought at full RP... only to have the next day her go on sale for half off.  Very annoying.

If you decide that your primary IP purchases will just be runes, I'd recommend dumping some RP into the IP boosts.  It tends to go a long way if you are able to do some marathon gaming here and there.  I've been picking up the 3 day IP boost for 560 RP or w/e.  Wife was out of town last weekend and I was able to play a heck of a lock - got about 4k IP over 2 days.  That's only like 20 vs human games with the IP boost.

I know you are a fan of skins, but I'd pesonally recommend checking out different heroes before you dump money into skins - could be you lose interest in the character you are playing now and have a great skin for it that you won't see for another 100 games.  Just sayin.

@everyone I played with last night - heh - oh, we had a bit of fun.  Sarmis/pacov/mrCheesyPants/carbon/sik (syke ) - we played several games on vent and were yucking it up a bit.  Think we lost a few and won a few.  My favorite moment was after 2 or 3 on our team died.  All of a sudden, we all look up at the map and see carbon running solo towards where the battle was (eg like 15 sec after the battle ended) with like 4 enemies about to swarm him.  We were like, "did carbon somehow teleport there for some reason?  Where did he even come from?"  Anyway, he got destroyed at that point, but it was pretty funny.  Lots of fun moments on vent.  Sarmis's "carry" zil

Ah, i see young little Hedgie finally joined the LoLing ranks . Just when i was wondering if i should get Retribution with this weekend deal (i won't even mention Thunder here....   )

I wish you could transfer IP points, i have over 65k IP points sitting in my EU account, and i've never spent a dime in RP (I know, i'm such a cheapass [e digicons]'[/e] )

Lastly, a few words for darkliath : How could you betray us your EU pals for those Yankee hanky-pankies? Tsk-Tsk

EU servers were uber unstable (now they are not), so could get a game few times in a month. Another thing is most people I know played on US due to the same reason, so I went there. Then more people from demigod came there, etc. Oh well... I barely played with anyone on EU anyway and it's a tough game to play alone...

I gained ~1k RP from Riot due to those server issues, but can't transfer them either

I'd say the same, just play a lot of games and ip will be no problem. Only spent money on skins. But i'm to cheap for that too^^

well Retribution is F2P this weekend, nom. Better get in some playtime before they ruin it with 3.18. >>
