Am I streaming

Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

ah - they disabled ranked queues because 1st pick could not ban characters they did not own (methinks the new ap appeared more than a few times...).  A patch is live and the issue is resolved, so you can play ranked again as of now.  Just log out and back in.

PACOV

can you please give me the ability to queue upgrades in Guild Wars? :3

We are accruing a large amount of guild IP.

I believe the novelty of GW2 has worn off for most of you guys

Just because it has for you doesn't mean it has for me...

Anyhow

Syndra is really quite fun to play as... I need more practice with her...

It's a combo of novelty wearing thin and increased course load that's drawn me away for the moment. I'll be around a bit, just having a very busy week.

we need a large amount.  I've been keeping an eye on it.  We need 5k atm and are floating around 4k.

random update - my exciting grind to a 2nd level 30 account continues.  I'm floating around lvl 26 or 27 now.  On track for a level 30 by the start of season 3 - perhaps sooner.  Noticed I'm reporting the crap out of people lately.  Probably not a good thing.  Ah well.

Been doing the new tribunal.  Like the setup.  Miss the IP gains.  Enjoying seeing the results of my punish/pardons though.  Helps you get a good idea of what others are doing.

My main account has like 8k ip - not sure what to do with atm.  My alt account has like 4700.  I think I'm going to save up and unlock ez or someone like that as I play him reasonably well as an adc.

blahblah over.  Thx for the games tonight.  Cya

Oh - and lol seems to still have some major bugs etc atm.  Not sure if the problem is because of the loldrophack "fix" attempts or they just hosed up the last patch.  I think they hosed the last patch as these issues have been compounded since then.  So, riot tried to do some background changes in the last patch that they did not include in patch notes.  Anyway, the drop hack "fix" will be pretty difficult to implement imo.  I'm pretty sure they could implement a system to capture all drop hacks, though.  They wouldn't be able to pinpoint the drop hack people exactly in a single game, but a pattern would certainly emerge.

that's sad

on Sep 18, 2012

Well, the good news is that syndra will likely get a little attention in the buff department before too long.  I'd wager folks haven't explored all of the utility she provides.  She's a character I'm still considering giving a go as a support/type (eg not full support, you'd go 2 gp/5 then build ap (maybe wota).  The grab mechanic has reasonable potential in a support lane imo.  And you could go boots of mobility (potentially) and just cause alot of havok with the enemy jungler.  I think there's enough time to even toss the enemy red into the baron pit for a long walk or safe kill early.  heh... if it works with flash, you could probably even toss a red at mid lane early.  Anyway, lots of stupid potential.  Still not sure if I'm going to blow my ip on her or not.

So, even though this is probably pointless, I thought I'd share a few thoughts after playing with pete's support taric. 1st - I've actually played with him before where he went taric and he was an exceptional support.  This last game, he was quite awful.  My main gripe with pete is that he refused to make any aggressive engagements and actually stood behind me during the majority of the laning phase.  That's all I'm going to say about pete.  But I am going to go over some of the basics of being a great support.  Hopefully this is of some use to those of you that are inexperienced in the role and want to get better.

Runes

I run a total of 3 different rune pages for my supports.  The most common one (eg the one you can use with pretty much any support and do fine) is this:  armor red, armor yellows, a mix of flat/scaling blues (your pick), gold/10 quints.  You can actually be a little flexible on the reds, but extra armor is always a good thing when you'll be up against another

Masteries

I don't have this in front of me, so I can't say off the top of my head.  I run with 2 different mastery pages, though.  1 if I'm going to be a major bruiser/tank.  The more common one takes a ton of points in the support tree (I get all the gold per sec + the extra starting gold options).  I take 2 points in increased experience and 1 point in that sage mastery (I think its called sage).  Did the research and one point in that is quite valuable.

Item build

This is pretty common on all supports as well.  I get 4 green + 1 red or blue pot (based on character) and the 180 gold mana regen item that builds into the philo stone.  A bunch of this is pretty standard, but I cannot stress this next part enough.  You are a support.  You should not leave base without 2 wards.  If I'm back to base early and the choice is boots and no wards or wards, I'm getting wards.  Its my job.  Don't leave base with less than 2.  Period.

OK - the rest of the build.  So, go philo stone, then boots, the heart of gold.  At this, your core is pretty much complete.  Now comes the customization.  I typically knock out my level 2 boots next.   There are 3 choices and you should pick situationally:  boots of mobility, the cooldown reduction boots, and mercury treads.  It's most common to run mercury treads for the tenacity bonus + mr.  I always prefer boots of mobility when its applicable, though.

Now, you are into your team item purchase mode.  And you can actually go quite a few different ways here and I really don't suggest a dogmatic approach.  If I have a support that could be useful with extra ap, then I might build a wota.  If I'm a support that will initiate, abyssal scepter isn't terrible.  But, theory crafting aside, its most common to build an aegis, upgrade your philo into sheulia's reverie, and then upgrade your heart of gold into whatever that item is called.  I find that I typically end up with whatever item I choose to build 1st + sheulia's reverie.

Warding

Your 1st and most important job imo is to ward, counterward, and if possible, remove wards.  I can't really think of a way to cover all scenarios here, but the goal is to do whatever is necessary to keep your adc safe with a minimal amount of wards.  You are also a ward based on your positioning.  There are 3 spots to ward that provide your adc with the safest possible setup.  The tri bush, the river near dragon (so you can see dragon), and in the bushes closest to the enemy tower (this keeps you safe from lane ganks).  Odds are you will rarely, if ever, have wards in all 3 spots at the same time, but those are the spots that are safeest for your adc.

Bush control

When you are laning, know what is going on in the bush is extremely important.  You can answer that question immediately with a ward.  But that's just a small portion of bush control.  For instance, let's say you ward the bush closest to the enemy tower.  You know what's going on there.  But if the enemy then pushes up past that bush and is able to stand in the bush closest to your tower, then the ward you placed isn't doing a heck of a lot (outside of warning you of lane ganks).  You now have to place a ward in the bush to maintain control (or simply full knowledge of where the support is, etc) or give up bush control completely and simply have no wards.  The most important part of the control is to do whatever you need to ensure that they enemy cannot just push up and force you to back out the bushes closest to your tower.

For example, let's say you are playing against an enemy blitzcrank/corki.  Now, you know that if blitz manages to grab you, then you are likely in a world of hurt.  So, to avoid this, you try to stand behind creep waves, etc.  You also very clearly understand the importance of bush control.  Simply by existing as a character in the bottom lane, blitz exudes quite a bit of control.  His chance for control skyrockets if you cannot see him in the bushes.  So, its obvious that you'd want to know where he is standing to reduce the odds of getting pulled.  It also works the other way.  If you can see him, then it increases the odds of you and your adc catching him.  If you have no bush control, you are generally completely zoned out.  So, that's why its very important as a support to fight for bush control.

Mindset

There are a few mindsets for supports (not related to characters).  Its a supports job to understand what your adc wants to do.  In most circumstances, the adc should be dictating the flow of a lane (the exception being leona).  If your adc just wants to safely farm, then its your job to help make that happen.  You try to maintain bush control, provide sustain, ward as appropriate, and just make it as easy as possible for your adc to get the farming done.  If your adc is playing aggressive, then its your job to help him be aggressive by getting lane control, warding as appropriate, and getting in the face of then enemy. If you get out with full hp and your adc dies, the adc is either a complete idiot or you are an awful support.  There's not really a lot of in between ground.  You need to absorb as much damage as it takes for your adc to get away safely if that's a viable option. And by that, I mean if you can make the difference and die but save your adc, do it.  The bottom line, though, is that a support exists to support their adc.  That is it.  You figure out how best to do that based on who you are playing with.  If you don't know the person, then you try to figure out their playstyle.  If you initiate and the adc doesn't do a thing, assume that you need to play more passive and just help the guy farm.  If your adc is going nuts and you aren't in the mix, get in the mix.  Try to help the adc get it done.  If you decide the adc is terrible, then suggest they try to play a little more passively and just farm, etc.

Peeling

Last - its a very important aspect of supporting, but you need to be able to peel for your adc as much as possible.  Even in the time fight phase, your adc is still likely the big damage dealer.  You want him alive and hitting as much as possible.  So, always keep an eye on him.  If someone is working him over, stun, w/e you can  to prolong the adc's life.

anyone else ever find themselves manically laughing after a game... strange thing

on Sep 20, 2012

I obviously have my own thoughts, but I'd like to hear some feedback.  I believe that "support" rengar is exceptional.  I believe a better meta is him + an adc with a dash/flash (corki/graves/ez) is op.  I base this on a consistent (pacov having little experience with rengar) 2+ kills early game (no jungle required).  Thoughts?

I personally think that vlad and I could easily destroy with this combo bot once we have practiced it (and it does not rely on any ap BS build).  I feel our weaknesses come from dumbass lanes losing and some dumb plays for vlad and me not being used to the combo together.  Personally, I think a silly arse combo like this should win with a solid team consistently.  The 2 easy kills... well... I challenge you to prove me wrong.  With little experience, I've pulled it off every game tonight.  The problem comes mid game - and that's due to inexperience. The SECRET is that the jungle (during level 1-6) can aggressively go at top and mid.  Eg - I'm Babe Ruth and calling my shots.  If you somehow end up with ali (won't happen in a tourney) + this combo.. and the ali is jungle FU... well, we DESTROY ALL LANES early game (eg bot lane destroys either way.   So, I think its amazingly strong bot, but requires a team to capitalize on the benefit.  Keep in mind that support rengar will be kind enough to grab a ward every shop, but is not a support at all.  Just a guy that fugs crap up.  Anyway, I maintain that vlad and I could easily come up with a combo bot with those 2 char that would EASILY carry us to 1900.  But I am crazy...

on Sep 20, 2012

I applaud that you're trying to shake things up bottom lane.  Blitz/Ali permabanned... Lulu can't get needed buffs because she's OP in certain pro team comps... Janna overnerfed...  Such a rich variety of supports left to play, thank you Riot!

Hedgie and I thought we had an unbeatable kill lane combo worked out not too long ago... well, maybe mostly me.  Didn't work out so well in practice but maybe we didn't give it enough of a chance.  Who knows, perhaps we'll have to try it again someday.  Anyway, good luck.
