Pacov's place to enjoy the show.

This thread has been closed by pacov - a new thread has been created here:  http://forums.demigodthegame.com/383615

Why create this thread?

Simply stated, the ladder is generally not the best depiction of skill, imho.  It GENERALLY tracks who plays the game the most and/or who acts like a jerk by cheating instead of who the most talented players are.  That's not to say that everyone high up in the ladder falls into this category.  So, if I were to put together my own ladder that indicated skill, I wonder how things would shake out.  Obvious hurdles being that many highly skilled individuals don't play each other.  So, this requires either the people that don't play together to play more together (my personal choice) or I have to rely from feedback from other players.

Your part if you want to participate

Who do you guys think are the best players in demigod today?  I understand that its a team game, but individual players do tend to stand out (and I also know that one great player can't guarantee a win if he has weak teammates, etc).  I'm happy to have everyone's feedback.  I'm not looking for people to jump in and flame. Just call out who you think is great or who you'd like to see fight.  Perhaps we'll get games going.  You want to flame and talk crap, your post will probably end up deleted.

You can nominate anyone you want.  To keep this from being a list of who likes who, several individuals that are generally considered excellent at the game will moderate the list.  If those individuals generally agree, a player can be removed or promoted in the list.

I've decided on 4 categories of players and have provided descriptions of each.  Please recommend players along with the category you feel they fit in.

Tier 1 Demigod Players:

Realistically, its my belief that there are 10-30 players in this game that are tier 1 DG players (the best). Those players shine as individuals, generally with a wide variety of characters and do not depend on a specific team or teammate to do well.  They can play exceptionally in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5.  These are players that do not cheat or desync games.  These are the people that you want on your team or you want to play against because you know you will get a good game.  Any player in this list or any other should currently be an active player.

Tier 2 Demigod Players:

These are players that don't quite currently fit into highest level of players, but are good players all the same.  Perhaps they require a specific team or can only do well in specific types of games (1v1, 2v2).  The bottom line is that they aren't quite as polished or versatile as the highest level players.

Tier 3 Demigod Players:

A third group (or list) would be everyone else. No need to list individuals...

Demigod Players that Should Be Avoided:

These would be specific individuals that clearly (and I mean clearly) cheat.  You don't get on this list unless I (pacov) am VERY convinced that you belong here.

  • AlienWarrior - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter confirmed by pacov.  As of 1/5/2010, this player has 34 wins and 0 losses and is ladder ranked 34.  I played a game with him in a 1v1 with him as the host.  After confirming that the player spoke English, I asked him if he would let the stats count if I beat him (there is currently a simple exploit that enables any host in a 1v1 game to make the game disappear if they don't want the stats to be kept - Also note that this player plays almost exclusively 1v1 games).  The player did not respond to my question.  As I began to tear down both sides of the player's base, he used the stat exploit and the game vanished as a result.  The player used this exploit with about 10 minutes left in the game.  Based on his stats and skill level (read: not highly skilled), this player is clearly exploiting the stat system.
  • PrizmSmurf - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter and poor sport confirmed by pacov on 4/1/2010.  After losing in a 2v2 matchup, PrizmSmurf said "I hope you die a long slow death of cancer.  I mean it."  Then said, "Bet you are going to enjoy watching me desync."  Then, just before the citadel went down, desynced the game. Based on his stats, he clearly does not desync games on a regular basis, but wishing cancer on someone because they beat you in a game and then committing the one offense in demigod that can get you banned (saying you are desycning then desyncing) is a bit over the top.  I suggest you avoid him.

I'm starting to delete some of the flame posts here.  Re: Wip - he requested to not be included in the list and I'll honor that.  Moving on then

Thank you Pacov, I let myself go. Didn't know you could do that?

How dare I not play with players like Flori88 on my team, a disgrace I say.

Playing with friends too? Consider that a double felony.

I like how everyone pretty much agrees that win/loss rates mean nothing (After say a 50-60% win rate), but then if me and my friend have higher % it is because we are stacked. I don't know about you guys but I can't stand when there is a pug on my team, sorry for not taking the plunge.

All we want is some damn 2 v 2 challengers but this game can't provide that.

I still I want some kind of 2 v 2 from you and an opponent Pacov.

hmm... does anyone out there that knows me think I actually have issues with playing this game with my friends?  I'd play in my team exclusively if that was a viable option.  But as there are very few teams out there presently, the option, as I'm sure you are generally aware, is to wait a substantial amount of time with your team only to generally end up playing against weaker opponents.  At least that was my experience with 3v3 premade games.  Perhaps 2v2 games are less painful to get going?

It's not like I have trouble following your point of view.  A good premade team mitigates the risk of having to carry a weaker player.  You know what you are getting in a premade.  Its clearly a safer, smarter choice.  But remember, it is demigod.... and sadly, the community frowns upon skilled players playing regularly on the same team UNLESS there is another group of skilled players playing on a the other team... and so on.

Hopefully we'll get a game going before too long.  I expect to be on some tonight.

If anyone feels like reading some more long winded fun, here's a thread I made quite some time ago about premades and the overlay... woo http://forums.demigodthegame.com/365479

Ragarth:

I played with him before and he plays a no heal sedna. Nilanthi does this as well and it's a terrible idea. He dies a lot because he just doesn't have heal and I have no idea why anyone would bother picking sedna if you're not taking heal, it's just not good. Wether he's a Tier2 player? Depends on the definition again. I'm not taking him to any tournament but then when are those ever going to happen again...

Yah that was a funny game.  I'll post the replay once GR is back online..

Besides build choices you could say that Ragarth over-extended through early game and that his allies had trouble adapting to his playstyle.

That seemed like getting used to current gameplay more than anything else to me.  Remember, the guy hasn't played for most of a year.  His build might even be from the loldays when Sedna didn't need a heal because her High Priests were healing 33% every 8 seconds.

What impressed me about that game was that he adapted while he was playing and spent lategame controlling portals and buying giants, rather than trying to tank.  Given how much he fed early and how sloppy I was playing we wouldn't have won without the shift.

I can forgive rusty when it's clear the player has his objectives on straight and can adapt on the fly.

Wip is a moot point since he isn't interested, but his LE seemed strong when I played PUGs against him.

I think part of this, as Kingslet points out, is a question of how you define your tiers.

For me

Tier 1 - consistently brilliant team players who punish all opponent mistakes and have impeccable builds* and strategic objectives

Tier 2 - one or at most two of the above is weaker - not consistent, not good with all teams, doesn't capitalize on opponent errors, non-optimal builds, or unclear grasp of objectives

Tier 3 - weak in two or three areas and not strong enough in the others to balance it out

Tier 4 - weak across the board

Tier 5 - cheats

Tier 6 - MIA

*builds includes skill allocation, cit upgrades, equipment, and item choices

So if a guy is playing a stats build but is always where he needs to be, or has his build order set but isn't punishing to the extent he should I'd say that's Tier 2.

For example - in that game I'd say my build was standard Assassin Oak, and I knew I was going for portals at 8, but I was inconsistent early and kept wasting my exit strategy.  I was newbing hard early where Ragarth needed a shield to get out and I spent the mana on a throw-away penitence instead, lol.  I kept RTB at inconvenient times for items like teleport scrolls and locks that I should have been stocked up on.  Even with the glaring errors I put the game at the lower end of Tier 2 because the build and map control were there.

Meanwhile I'd say Kingslet's continual use of massive self-heals was excellent and unexpected in a UB, and he consistently applied pressure where it was needed.  I'd need to have a few more games with him before I called Tier 1, but I'm not sure what I'd improve in his technical play.  Team play wasn't all there, but again, it took a while to adapt to an unconventional build on the team.

My point is if we are saying Tier 2 is more restrictive than above then we have to eliminate 90% of that list (and I'd be the first to go, based on that game^^)

Man, I wish most of the community could comprehend this. Another thing annoys me is, we clearly put 2 v 2 teams/premade in the titles of the matches, but the only guys who join are this pugs who can't read. Then they might try to balance the teams even though it is established that this is a team game. I don't mind when good players join without a team, because they accept they will take anyone but damn, the rest of them...

Hell, the only ones who are an actual team and will stay for long spans of time are 2nana/PrinceMardini/Heroes temp and I regard them to be one of the best teams/players. They aren't too great in prison but in cataract, they are map control heroes. The way they play reminds of Erska/Sakke but without that element of if you rush them, they should crumble feeling.

Tier II -

Saiitan - solid Rook, pulls Hail Mary boulders out of nowhere

Wipuliwo - solid Erebus, knows the game

Ragarth - this guy was good eight months ago and just recently got back into it. He is a bit rusty but his strategic grasp is sharp as ever

franmella - solid all round player

iceninelol - strong ice TB

anyone have any thoughts on Ke5trel's tier 2 recommendations?

franmella should definetly not be on there.

on Jan 07, 2010

I played with Ragarth the first game I ever played online in retail. We went up to the then top players Flurus and his mate, which we won.   It may have something to do with us choosing double erebus and 900 dmg bites though.

I'll ask if we can get a feature that lets people see a list of the players they've made notes on using the notes system.

Comprehend what? That you like playing with your teammates and it is hard to get a game with them? I think we all get that, however just don't care.  I play premades every once in a while if they are willing to boot the newer players to make it some what fair (however most don't and just tell me to get out) because there are plenty of good public players out there that can make it competitive.

But how often do you join premade games without your premade when there are other game choices in the lobby? I doubt ever.

on Jan 07, 2010

What I don't get is that premades(where I'm obviously one of) are constantly whining about their games not filling up. They have some sort of feeling that someone should play them. The reason why we don't get in many games is of course that noone likes getting bashed. Again I play both premade and Pub(extensively) and I am not at all concerned if balance is needed. Unbalanced games are really really not fun, not for the losing or the winning party.

Hey I do pay against other premades alone, but I'll only stick around if my 2nd is competant/friend. I just want high level matches without a pug.

Also Pacov if you want to do 2 v 2 against us, come on now? It'll be fun. I know you are there somewhere...*Looks left and right*

probably the most entertaining would be me n kalel or me n trouser.  I will be on later.  It might be best to try to set a time and password the game.  I'm guessing we will keep missing each other for a bit until we do that.  Oh.. and I hit the forums up throughout the day when I'm working.  No ability to play dg when that's going on.

on Jan 07, 2010

If you use a vent try to make it the Lagwar vent. Whenever I play I'm in there, same for Obscenitor. I see Maccilia in there from time to time and Pacov as well. If both me and Obs are on we will always play 2v2 against any premade that wants to. It's just hard to get a game going, as everyone already concluded.
