Why create this thread?

Simply stated, the ladder is generally not the best depiction of skill, imho.  It GENERALLY tracks who plays the game the most and/or who acts like a jerk by cheating instead of who the most talented players are.  That's not to say that everyone high up in the ladder falls into this category.  So, if I were to put together my own ladder that indicated skill, I wonder how things would shake out.  Obvious hurdles being that many highly skilled individuals don't play each other.  So, this requires either the people that don't play together to play more together (my personal choice) or I have to rely from feedback from other players.

Your part if you want to participate

Who do you guys think are the best players in demigod today?  I understand that its a team game, but individual players do tend to stand out (and I also know that one great player can't guarantee a win if he has weak teammates, etc).  I'm happy to have everyone's feedback.  I'm not looking for people to jump in and flame. Just call out who you think is great or who you'd like to see fight.  Perhaps we'll get games going.  You want to flame and talk crap, your post will probably end up deleted.

You can nominate anyone you want.  To keep this from being a list of who likes who, several individuals that are generally considered excellent at the game will moderate the list.  If those individuals generally agree, a player can be removed or promoted in the list.

I've decided on 4 categories of players and have provided descriptions of each.  Please recommend players along with the category you feel they fit in.

Tier 1 Demigod Players:

Realistically, its my belief that there are 10-30 players in this game that are tier 1 DG players (the best). Those players shine as individuals, generally with a wide variety of characters and do not depend on a specific team or teammate to do well.  They can play exceptionally in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5.  These are players that do not cheat or desync games.  These are the people that you want on your team or you want to play against because you know you will get a good game.  Any player in this list or any other should currently be an active player.

Tier 2 Demigod Players:

These are players that don't quite currently fit into highest level of players, but are good players all the same.  Perhaps they require a specific team or can only do well in specific types of games (1v1, 2v2).  The bottom line is that they aren't quite as polished or versatile as the highest level players.

Tier 3 Demigod Players:

A third group (or list) would be everyone else. No need to list individuals...

Demigod Players that Should Be Avoided:

These would be specific individuals that clearly (and I mean clearly) cheat.  You don't get on this list unless I (pacov) am VERY convinced that you belong here.

  • AlienWarrior - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter confirmed by pacov.  As of 1/5/2010, this player has 34 wins and 0 losses and is ladder ranked 34.  I played a game with him in a 1v1 with him as the host.  After confirming that the player spoke English, I asked him if he would let the stats count if I beat him (there is currently a simple exploit that enables any host in a 1v1 game to make the game disappear if they don't want the stats to be kept - Also note that this player plays almost exclusively 1v1 games).  The player did not respond to my question.  As I began to tear down both sides of the player's base, he used the stat exploit and the game vanished as a result.  The player used this exploit with about 10 minutes left in the game.  Based on his stats and skill level (read: not highly skilled), this player is clearly exploiting the stat system.
  • PrizmSmurf - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter and poor sport confirmed by pacov on 4/1/2010.  After losing in a 2v2 matchup, PrizmSmurf said "I hope you die a long slow death of cancer.  I mean it."  Then said, "Bet you are going to enjoy watching me desync."  Then, just before the citadel went down, desynced the game. Based on his stats, he clearly does not desync games on a regular basis, but wishing cancer on someone because they beat you in a game and then committing the one offense in demigod that can get you banned (saying you are desycning then desyncing) is a bit over the top.  I suggest you avoid him.

First off I'm not convinced it's even a working cheat. My understanding of the claim is that a game from which you disconnect causes no exp loss, or is there supposedly some other trick? Second I'm not trying to rank up and nor have I been for a while, certainly not since before this thread was started, and third my game hangs indefinitely at times when the citadel animation is supposed to play, to the extent that I sometimes have to crash my client to end it.

I'm not at all surprised that no one can prove the cheat works in spite of how incredibly easy it would be to test. Just play only one game for a whole day and disconnect from that one. If you don't lose exp then it probably works. If you really had a lot of time to kill you could look through my game history and see that there is no day on which I ever conducted that experiement myself, I genuinely don't know if the exploit works, and as I said before I'm skeptical it does.

If this were a trial and these people were the prosecutors I think they'd be hard pressed to convict me when they failed to provide a motive or evidence of the offense.

But seriously, I don't care if people think I cheat or cheated. It's just their way of rationalizing how shitty players who play well are, just like they convince themselves that premades are bad players in spite of the fact that they refuse to face them. There's no underlying logic there, and to be quite frank I won the only two tournaments this game is going to have, there's really nothing to prove and nothing else to win. We won our mice and two hundred dollars.

Basically the whole cheating thing is a silly little rumor that Kalel inexplicably started in spite of us having played together quite a bit. I upset him somehow and he started a chain of events that led us to here: the two of us wasting time trying to be reasonable about an unreasonable event related to a game whose community is doing its best to shoot itself in the foot on a daily basis.

If people cared so much about a possible exploit that affects your experience why didn't they just crown the top 10 or 20 players to begin with and then focus on figuring whose ranking is legit? Seriously, who both cares so much about that element that they strike anyone who might have manipulated it it from the list of good players and simultaneously derides its value as a ranking tool?

I agree with everything you said Obscenitor.

on Jan 23, 2010

I made mulitple test regarding the supposed experience exploit.  These tests were in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3.  In every instance, I quit before the citadel on my team was destroyed.  In some instances, just before the citadel went down, in others a few minutes before the was destroyed.  In every test, I had 0 favor in the recorded stats.  In every test, my experience dropped.  In short, there does not appear to be any sort of working exploit associated with experience.  So, regardless of why Obscenitor often chose in the past to leave games just as the citadel was going down, etc, it was not triggering any sort of exploit or granting him an unfair advantage in the ladder.  He should not be listed in any way among players who cheat.

My apologies for indicating otherwise at any point as I was clearly in the wrong.

That's nice and mature of you to admit.

Janook really should be on the Tier 1 list.

Just giving my 2 cents

on Jan 23, 2010

put me in third tier please!

Thanks Pacov for adding him in

OK - just to take a moment to discuss a little of the criticism brought up by obsc regarding this silly list of mine.

You had an opportunity to use this list as a shoutout to the players whose skill levels are top tier. The ones who you would most likely want on your team or whom you would most likely dread playing against. Instead it's turned into a critque of the players' values and other aspects of their playstyle which really have nothing to do with the odds of them winning some kind of tournament.

I still personally feel that the list is a shoutout to the players whose skill levels are top tier and is continuing to shape into what I want it to be.  I don't feel that it is a critique of player's values outside of blatant cheating and that being limited to desync exploits and host disconnects, a group Obscenitor does not fall into.  I do maintain, though, that even if the absolute best dg player on earth crawled out of the woodwork, but would cheat if he expected to lose - well, I wouldn't place much value on that player.  So, that's one place where I would personally skew this list and will continue to do so.

Additionally, one of the underlying goals of this little list is, outside of the overt ranking concept, to get more of our small community playing together.  To that effect, its been a reasonable success.  And because more people are playing together that normally would not, there is an increase is challenging games, people are somehow discovering that the almighty premade is not necessarily almighty, and we've even got 2 silly clans going on a public vent server.

on Jan 24, 2010

Honestly, I was hoping this would just be a list of people who you can count on not to ruin a game for you. The tier thing bugs me quite a bit.

But that's just me.

on Jan 24, 2010

I agree with Teseer, get it out.

on Jan 24, 2010

hehe... even the title of the thread alone implies ranking...

on Jan 24, 2010

Understood. The original title was 'Who are the best Demigod players?' or something along those lines. When the list got rather big, thats when I had the hope I mentioned.
