Pacov's place to enjoy the show.
Feel free to jump in and discuss lol even if you aren't Demigod alumni

So, during the (12 day or so) downtime with the MP servers, I decided to give LoL another go and have been enjoying myself.  I'm glad DG is back up and running, but the break was enough for me to try another competitive DoTa style game and start to enjoy it.  This thread isn't about bashing DG or any nonsense (so don't ffs).  Its simply a place for those of us that play or have played DG and now play LoL as a main or occasionally to discuss the game and keep in touch.

So - chime in here if you have been playing LoL with your experiences or whatever you want to chat about.

I'll get us started.  I've been enjoying the F2P aspect of LoL quite a bit.  Remember WAAAAYYYY back when favor points in DG meant something?  Eg - remember playing games and looking forward to unlocking a favor item you wanted to try out?  It's like that all the time with LoL (well, it will be for quite some time anyway).  You get IP (favor points) for every game you play.  You can shell out some money if you really want to buy all of the characters, etc (the temptation is always there for the quick win), but you can also just play for fun and earn enough IP to unlock a new char, etc.  It's been very satisfying for me slowly earn enough IP to try out a new character, etc.

As it stands, I'm ok with 3 characters (card guy, silv, and viking pants - there are so many char it takes awhile to learn all the names).  I'm ok early, decent mid game, and utter SHITE late game with my characters.  It seems very diff from DG in that respect (if we are kicking ass early/mid, you can't harass like a god late game - that's gotten me killed more than a few times).  There are ALOT of reasonable builds (from what I can tell).  I started by trying out many diff char vs ai to learn them (that's why I'm like level 12 with "13 wins" or so).  Then I learned you get more IP from playing against humans, so I just switched up.

Anyway, I think the game is fun now and I'm looking forward to the new domination mode (it's a Demigod knock off imo) that is essentially holding points to get bonuses from what I understand.  Hearing about that mode is pretty much exactly why I started playing.  Oh, and pretty damn close to 100% of games end because another team beat you - not because someone dropped.

Anyway, I'm going thru a learning curve.  I play with folks that are "experienced" and I often think they are retarded after my impressive 40 games or so (vs their 500+ games).  The strats often sound idiotic to me.  But that said, I fell into line in a game with jon, paint, obi, and 2 of jon's clan mates tonight and we scored a win when i thought we were done.  My biggest weakness (I think anyway) is not knowing what folks can do with their characters... I think there are like 70 char... as a new player, you have NO IDEA what each char can do until you play them or play against them enough... and that will take some time.  Anyway, I'm pacov on LoL if you play and want to add me as a friend.  I'm not exactly good, but I probably won't lose you the game at this point.  We should organize some LoL games and some DG games.  Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you.

heh... strange world, eh?  I grabbed the pacov name way back at the start... when I hated lol.

I'm pretty sure I suck at jungling.  Oh well.

Ok - so question for you more experienced folks:  who are the best characters?  I've been working a bit on amumu, but zen mentioned that he's a crap character in ranked games.  Is that the case?  I'd prefer to work on characters that are solid in ranked matches as I think I'm going to get competitive in this game.  Thanks!

all dg oldtimers.  masc is rawrr.  Good times!

moved to pc gaming thread - don't really want to detract from dg.

I never said he's crap. He's very good for his cc. I think you're confusing my comment with mundo. I don't think he's that viable.

Quoting OMG__IN1, reply 25RotT is very harsh to leavers. If you have above 15% leaves, your account is perma-banned

Yeah - but I'm really just talking about surrendering.  The rule is after 20 min you can surrender.  I'm griping about folks that have refuse to surrender when there is no real chance of winning and forcing players that would rather move onto a game that might actually be winnable to stay and play crap out.

That said, I'm all for perma bans for leavers, etc.  I don't know what policy lol has in place for such things though.  It's like for every feature that would be good, there's someone abusing it.  For instance, it would have been great and guaranteed my team a win if we could somehow kick the guy that intentionally feeding.  But if there was an ability to vote a person out, then shites would just do that if someone was crap on their team, etc.  There wouldn't be any balance.  It would be nice if there was some sort of empowerment given to honest players to kick or ban folks like that... but oh well.  I'd wager they could implement something silly like auto-kicking if someone dies like 8 times in 4 or 5 minutes or so.

Hope not to take this off topic, and I know I'm addressing a post from a while back (but I did read all the posts following), but this is an issue I had too, except I found it interesting that I had the opposite view.

I totally understand your view, that fighting a losing battle is a waste of time and having someone choosing not to surrender when it's an obvious loss can be annoying, I agree.  My gripe though, is when people surrender when there is still a chance - as long as they change their strategy.

I'm not an experienced player at all, and perhaps my views are wrong, but I've had experiences where people quit after losing several team battles and the enemy is way ahead in items/gold and levels.  Woah, you might think, if they're way ahead in items and exp, then quite obviously they have the advantage and our chances of winning are low.  I agree with your judgment, and the surrender happens at this point anyway.

However, after the first or second team battle loss, I find it a fairly poor idea for us to rush their team again, right after an ace.  Yet that keeps happening.  Quite obviously if we lost before when we were closer in levels and power, we might win, but we're just giving them a greater advantage every time we die, and yet we still rush into them.

After several times of running into the anvil, we surrender.  My way of thinking is this: if you're going to surrender, just take another route and rush their nexus/base thing.  Why?  Because if you surrender, it's a loss.  If you take another route and their team steamrolls the towers and then the nexus, then it's a loss.

But if you, by rushing their base, cause one or two to warp back in confusion and defend their base, perhaps we have a chance of destroying half their team while they decide whether to push or fall back.  Even if they push, if we push fast enough, we may even destroy the nexus before they do.  According to their surrender philosophy, it's a loss either way.  Why not try one last push for a slim chance of victory instead of the tried-and-failed method of rushing their fed team?

As I said before, I'm not an experienced player, and have my fair share of losses, and would say that I may have played poorly enough to contribute a lot to the falling of my team.  Since I have not managed to get any team to try this tactic, I'm wondering if the more experienced players could lend a word in letting me know if, in a surrender situation, it's a good idea?

Oh I completely agree here, too.  There are only a few things I find more annoying when the score is like 18 to 17 kills at the 20 minute mark and some shite calls for a surrender.  I'm more talking about the scenario where someone on my team has 10 deaths and 0 kills at the 20 min mark and the score is like 30 to 1 kills... That's the type of scenario where I'd much rather throw in the towel than hope my feeding pal learns to stop dying.

I'd just personally rather not wait around for and hope for a miracle.  I'd play it, but I'd much rather just get into a new game where things are a bit more reasonable.

I also agree that if you are getting destroyed, perhaps changing tactics, like you suggested is appropriate.  You'd think folks would consider that.

Thanks for the list of characters, zen.

What websites do you folks use to research strategies, replays?  I've been going to www.mobafire.com.  Their ads are extremely annoying to me though (flash popups at the bottom).  Anyone know how to block that crap in firefox?

on Aug 28, 2011

I think there is a firefox add on called adblock. I dunno though as I don't use FF. I think Solomid have some guides on their website, but I don't use websites for strategy etc. The closet thing I use are livestreams.

I like Morecowbell.com the most. It is mostly lower elo players though. Solomid and CLGaming are for higher elo players. I don't know their site names though.

Thanks for the tip, shiro.  I checked out solomid. I really like the polish that's gone into the sites I've seen (mouse over items and you can see how much they cost and how to make, etc).

Fun thing I learned recently (that everyone but me probably knew) - you know how you see the "ingredient items" for whatever main item you want to buy?  Well, let's say you have 4 out of your 5 slots used.  I typically buy the items I need 1 by 1.  Which means that at this point in the game (where I have 4 full slots and only 1 open), you can't build large items (as they appear to require like 3 slots or whatever).  Well, apparently all you have to do is click on the main item and you can buy it directly even if you only have 1 slot and it requires 3 to make.  Perhaps that's completely common sense, but I didn't understand anyway.  Glad I figured out that nonsense now, though, as it pretty much meant my kit would max out MUCH earlier than everyone else's in long games.

I'm a little better at amumu jungling after some practice, but still rubbish for the most part.  Hit level 20 today and started buying the expensive runes, though.  Pretty sure that will go a LONG way towards me jungling successfully.

Oh, and I know people bitch about demigod from time to time for this and that, but I literally had to wait 30 minutes to log in tonight.  Annoying shite.  It's not all roses over here.

true true. but at least we know people are working their asses off to make it work

@ArcElement2002

Have you heard of elo hell? if not i'm happy for you. The main issue is, online you're playing with 4 strangers. Teamplay does not arise until very high rating, which is why a lot of games are decided fast and people want to surrender in lower rating games. Is it worth trying a comeback and playing extra 30minutes, which you will probably lose anyways than use those 30 minutes to win the next game?

Don't give me wrong I don't surrender easily, but once a battle is lost and you have poor coordination with your teammates it's healthier to surrender for your psyche and time.

My solution only play with friends.

well, yes - but I know people are working to fix DG anytime if has an issue (I usually get feedback pretty quick from someone at SD in the past), its just that it's not as high a priority for them to fix things (lol loses HUGE amts of potential revenue if there is an outage - demigod... not so much.  So, if a server blows up for DG, I doubt someone is going to get called into the office to fix that crap over the weekend, etc.  With lol, I can pretty much guarantee they have staff that is ready to resolve things (again, because large amts of money could be lost).  I don't see anything wrong with that, honestly).   They do get fixed, though.

Thanks for the link, zen.  I'll check some of that out.  I've learned a bit from guides, but mostly replays make me a better player at this point.  Danke!

edit - oh, I played Alistar for my last game of the night.  I've been working on my jungle amumu, but all of the team games I've played tonight had someone else wanting to jungle, so I was stuck with mundo (my default I can play well enough character).  Anyway, from what I've watched, alistar can also jungle like a champ and that really makes his headbutt valuable (eg headbutting an enemy back into our team to kill), but I didn't get to give that a go either.  What I did love, though, was late game being able to spam heals on our team over and over when we were working inhibitors, etc.  That gave us quite a bit more staying power.  Anyway, its a unique role... the tank that can heal the team.  Very interesting.  I'm still crap with him, but I'm starting to see the possibilities.

oh - and I've decided to start dropping my ip into runes, etc, now that I've hit 20.  That will make a pretty big difference I think.  I can't wait for level 30 and starting on ranked games.  It's good it will take me some time to get there so I can learn (+1 lol), but I really want to start to pug at the ranked level and see how things go.  Then, if i actually get good at this game (I'd rank myself a mid at this point - a step up from my previous just below a mid assessment from a week ago), then I'd like to try to form a premade team with DG folks if possible.  How awesome would it be to have a DG team in lol?    And if we became an elite team, that would bring notice to Demigod as well and perhaps result in money being spent on the IP for a sequel.  I might be playing other games, but I still want Demigod perfected!
