Pacov's place to enjoy the show.
Feel free to jump in and discuss lol even if you aren't Demigod alumni

So, during the (12 day or so) downtime with the MP servers, I decided to give LoL another go and have been enjoying myself.  I'm glad DG is back up and running, but the break was enough for me to try another competitive DoTa style game and start to enjoy it.  This thread isn't about bashing DG or any nonsense (so don't ffs).  Its simply a place for those of us that play or have played DG and now play LoL as a main or occasionally to discuss the game and keep in touch.

So - chime in here if you have been playing LoL with your experiences or whatever you want to chat about.

I'll get us started.  I've been enjoying the F2P aspect of LoL quite a bit.  Remember WAAAAYYYY back when favor points in DG meant something?  Eg - remember playing games and looking forward to unlocking a favor item you wanted to try out?  It's like that all the time with LoL (well, it will be for quite some time anyway).  You get IP (favor points) for every game you play.  You can shell out some money if you really want to buy all of the characters, etc (the temptation is always there for the quick win), but you can also just play for fun and earn enough IP to unlock a new char, etc.  It's been very satisfying for me slowly earn enough IP to try out a new character, etc.

As it stands, I'm ok with 3 characters (card guy, silv, and viking pants - there are so many char it takes awhile to learn all the names).  I'm ok early, decent mid game, and utter SHITE late game with my characters.  It seems very diff from DG in that respect (if we are kicking ass early/mid, you can't harass like a god late game - that's gotten me killed more than a few times).  There are ALOT of reasonable builds (from what I can tell).  I started by trying out many diff char vs ai to learn them (that's why I'm like level 12 with "13 wins" or so).  Then I learned you get more IP from playing against humans, so I just switched up.

Anyway, I think the game is fun now and I'm looking forward to the new domination mode (it's a Demigod knock off imo) that is essentially holding points to get bonuses from what I understand.  Hearing about that mode is pretty much exactly why I started playing.  Oh, and pretty damn close to 100% of games end because another team beat you - not because someone dropped.

Anyway, I'm going thru a learning curve.  I play with folks that are "experienced" and I often think they are retarded after my impressive 40 games or so (vs their 500+ games).  The strats often sound idiotic to me.  But that said, I fell into line in a game with jon, paint, obi, and 2 of jon's clan mates tonight and we scored a win when i thought we were done.  My biggest weakness (I think anyway) is not knowing what folks can do with their characters... I think there are like 70 char... as a new player, you have NO IDEA what each char can do until you play them or play against them enough... and that will take some time.  Anyway, I'm pacov on LoL if you play and want to add me as a friend.  I'm not exactly good, but I probably won't lose you the game at this point.  We should organize some LoL games and some DG games.  Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you.

Quoting JUSThaveFUN, reply 104true true. but at least we know people are working their asses off to make it work
well, yes - but I know people are working to fix DG anytime if has an issue (I usually get feedback pretty quick from someone at SD in the past), its just that it's not as high a priority for them to fix things (lol loses HUGE amts of potential revenue if there is an outage - demigod... not so much.  So, if a server blows up for DG, I doubt someone is going to get called into the office to fix that crap over the weekend, etc.  With lol, I can pretty much guarantee they have staff that is ready to resolve things (again, because large amts of money could be lost).  I don't see anything wrong with that, honestly).   They do get fixed, though.

Thanks for the link, zen.  I'll check some of that out.  I've learned a bit from guides, but mostly replays make me a better player at this point.  Danke!

edit - oh, I played Alistar for my last game of the night.  I've been working on my jungle amumu, but all of the team games I've played tonight had someone else wanting to jungle, so I was stuck with mundo (my default I can play well enough character).  Anyway, from what I've watched, alistar can also jungle like a champ and that really makes his headbutt valuable (eg headbutting an enemy back into our team to kill), but I didn't get to give that a go either.  What I did love, though, was late game being able to spam heals on our team over and over when we were working inhibitors, etc.  That gave us quite a bit more staying power.  Anyway, its a unique role... the tank that can heal the team.  Very interesting.  I'm still crap with him, but I'm starting to see the possibilities.

oh - and I've decided to start dropping my ip into runes, etc, now that I've hit 20.  That will make a pretty big difference I think.  I can't wait for level 30 and starting on ranked games.  It's good it will take me some time to get there so I can learn (+1 lol), but I really want to start to pug at the ranked level and see how things go.  Then, if i actually get good at this game (I'd rank myself a mid at this point - a step up from my previous just below a mid assessment from a week ago), then I'd like to try to form a premade team with DG folks if possible.  How awesome would it be to have a DG team in lol?    And if we became an elite team, that would bring notice to Demigod as well and perhaps result in money being spent on the IP for a sequel.  I might be playing other games, but I still want Demigod perfected!
before i read your huge post, i could endlessly write what they need to fix with demigod, bugs, multiplayer, items list goes endless...

so there is no comparison whatsoever what riot teams is doing. Their only problem is that they have such a huge player base, imagine! i want that problem in demigod!

Hey I just found this post. I will say playing LoL just got a lot better I think now that I can get some games in with all you guys. I am sad to hear about the death of DG so to speak, but then i could not play it anyway. Still that game hold a special place in my heart. Man I miss DA.

Anyway, Pacov I can't tell you how happy I am to see you and Zen, Peter, Rawr, Thunder (when you get it up) and anyone else that comes over from DG playing. Those crappy graphics and server based play allow me to be able to smoothly game will 10 people from the US so im happy with them for now. Though i don't have a problem with SC2 so meh. I suck at SC2 don't ask

Good choice on Amumu. From what I have seen he is a pretty standard play at high levels. Also everyone from DG seems to want to play AP damage characters.

I would dissagree with Zen a little on the top characters though I think his AD carries are spot on. I would add Ramos in there instead of Jarvin. I don't think Jarvin is a true tank, but he is good.

On AP however I would go - Karthus, Leblanc (just cause she nukes soo hard), Swain, and Malz. Vieger is the best AP if there is another pure AP on the field.

Pacov, getting a high end team(s) from the DG players would be awesome.

Completely agree - it's really nice to see some old names again.

yup.

Hey with amumu - is he really viable if you aren't using him to jungle - or is he someone that you'd only really want on your team as a jungler?  thx

on Aug 29, 2011

Personally I wouldn't put him in a lane. He just doesn't do that great in a lane and hes an amazing jungler. Godly ganks to.

Edit: And regarding the high elo demigod team. You should look up wallstop (Gl_spectre I think?) but he is wallstop on lol.

on Aug 29, 2011

I remember him as wallstop - I'll look him up.  I'm certainly not qualified for the super pimp team currently anyway - just thinking of the future.

we should make a team with all the demigod players. So there is always someone on to practice with. Then eventually we will get good and organized enough.

So - sometimes I hate playing with folks I know.  Or so I thought before i started pugging some tonight.  The pro of playing folks you know is understanding what you are going to get going in.  Who's good with who, do they jungle, etc.  The downside is that you can't always take a role you want with folks u know (if you want to win, that is).  Also, if you are lower leveled than your pals, then you are in for a more challenging match when you get put up against a bunch of level 30s.

Then if you pug, you have no idea what you'll get, but you know it will be somewhat reasonably matched (eg no level 30s will magically appear in my level 20 game).  The downside is that many pugs are just stupid, even at level 20.  I'm fair with most characters and decent with others.  I played like 3 pug games in a row that were lost by level 20 players just making dumb decisions and people following them, making equally dumb decisions.  One game I had clairvoyance as a roaming alistar and my level 20 teammates were awestricken, trying to figure out how they could see different spots of the map randomly... literally my entire team did not know what clairvoyance was.  Furthermore, they didn't understand what do to if I'd flash that skill near them, show them the abush, and then ping for them to get the fug out.

That said, the previous night, apparently any of my pug games where grouped with the good folks, because it was completely the opposite.  Just goes to show that its unfortunately random at times.  So, its also a strong arguement for playing with folks you know.

Oh - and I am really starting to understand the value of wards.  My roaming alistar buys alot of them to reasonable effect.  My team was getting its arse handed to it.  I figured the next big battle would be in the jungle near our left inhib, so I dropped 5 wards at all of the spots.  My team then proceeded to gank (if I hadn't dropped 5 wards, I can guarantee the whole damn team would have gotten killed).  But that said, it always feels like money I shouldn't spend when I buy them and I'm lower leveled, but it makes such a huge difference.

Also, I really hate the dmg output of my roaming alistar - its really great for ganks and counter jungling, but literally every game I pugged tonight did not have a jungler on either team.  smeh.

edit - also, I think I need to be a bit more patient.  The Demigod lobbies always meant a long wait towards the end there.  With a pug in lol, I can be up and running in like 10 seconds.  We tried organizing an in house 5v5 and I just started getting pissy when it took 10-15 min to get going.  pacov needs more patience.

So let's see... characters I'm currently not terrible with:

  • dr mundo - I play him a bit tankish and even started customizing my item build and found a mix that works much better than any guide I've read
  • amumu - I've been working on jungling with him and I've come up with a route that seems to work well and invades the enemy territory as well.  What I'm not good at is coming out for ganks early - kind of a huge component of jungling.
  • alistar - I've been playing a roaming alistar with clairvoyance.  Very weak early as I dont spend a huge amount of time laning in any one spot, but excellent support with wards and clairvoyance and great lane harassment.  This build would work better on a solid team methinks, but does ok in pugs.  I can very consistently sneak up on players and initiate a kill attempt by pushing the enemy back into our team, I found that the crappy pugs I've been in don't have enough damage available to get kills out of it.

A few others... that's just what I've been playing recently.

Oh - and I've been spending all of my ip on runes lately.

on Aug 30, 2011

I think the biggest issue PUG's wise, is Champ selection.

Ive seen teams consisting of 3+ Carries. And unless your lucky to get a solid level head team your SOL.

I usually play the tank role b/c no one else will....There no chance for me to tank 3+ players hitting me for 400-1000 critical damage every second. I hate Critical...I sure wish there was a cap for it. Its not fun to fight a Xin with 4 Phantom Dancers.

yeah - I'm sure that has a bit to do with it.  From what I've read, most of the ranked games (or probably just level 30 games) always have a jungler and some sort of logical composition.  Most if not all of the games I get into as a pug do not have one, so perhaps I'll get back to focussing on that and working more on my amumu.  That doesn't really work when I play with most of my pals, though, as one of them almost always wants to jungle.  Ah well.

Anyway, i'll be on for some gaming after work tonight.
