Am I streaming

Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

Here's a guide I made

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

Karl(or anyone else who can jungle), I need your help...

I feel that I am regressing in terms of being an effective jungler. I am absolutely fine that my main junglers are banned most games, (frankly it does feel a little unfair when I pick Amumu) but I never have as much of an impact on the game as Karl does.

What behaviors have you noticed that I have that I need to remedy?

What do I need to develop?

thanks in advance

Just work on better identifying gank opportunities.  For example if you are playing a jungler who can gank early (like Mao), you should be constantly trying to gank Bryff mid early.  If you don't see your lanes getting pushed for easy ganks, start setting up lane ganks.

Also, know your scaling.  Mao doesn't scale hard, so you want to be playing aggressive early.  If you are playing some other junglers, you can just hang out and let your scaling take over.

yay - averaging about 100 hits per day on the twitch stream now (was 30 per day a month ago, then 50 per day 2 weeks ago).  I'm not really advertising, so its pretty much our Demigod crowd + anyone that tracked from the youtube vids + toga folks.  Glad more folks are enjoying our in house stuff, etc.  Night all!

on Jan 22, 2013

Close to last (or last) note of the night, I'm going to talk for a quick moment about myself.  Check the title of this thread that you have been following (with < 2k posts) or recently stumbled upon.  I'm not exactly an attention whore, but I obviously must like attention.  If it was just a LoL thread, the title would indicate that; instead, the thread gravitates towards my interests in LoL and my pals here.  So, that aside, outside of this thread, I expanded upon things and created a bunch of youtube content (> 10k views) and eventually started streaming on twitch. I don't receive money from this.  I just like doing it.  I said all of this to get to the following (hold on a sec).  Most of you know me.  I'm certainly a personality.  I can be very nice and also a complete asshole.  Truth be told, this sort of bs is what make me interesting. So... here's where I get to the fun part.

I'd love to see more of you streaming - seriously - I'd like to watch vids of you in game talking about what's going on, etc.  I like watching folks I know stream.  That said, consider if I said NOTHING during games.  Would it be as interesting to watch?  I'd say no.  BUT - if you think yourself a chatty fellow (or think you could become that), I'd be happy to help you get setup for streaming.  You need some bandwidth overhead, but I'd absolutely be willing to help you get setup so I have another stream to watch and folks that might prefer you to me, etc, could have better content.  So, pm me on this forum (or in LoL) if you'd like to stream and want someone to walk you through it.  Believe me, I'm not about to waste my time, so we'll discuss your available bandwidth (imo, you need 2-3 megs upload bandwidth to stream well).  If you pass that requirement, I'll help you get setup and try to coach you on your stream for a night or two.  So, if you want to get a steam going or want some help, let me know.

tl;dr - if you think you could provide a cool stream for folks that follow this thread, I'll help you get setup.  I'd watch a stream with karl on it if he'd explain what he's thinking as a jungler.  I'd enjoy it, and others probably would as well.

just saw this last night.  me = wonders if its something we could pull off or if its just completely impractical.

on Jan 22, 2013

okay, thanks Jack and Karl for your input, I'll try to put it use in future games...

I think I'm going to start grabbing oracles/pinks for botlane ward clearing, because it is very frustrating to attempt a gank only to have adc/support run all the way back to tower...

Pacov, I have a stream, but I mostly use it for Sins of a Solar Empire related stuff, like teaching fellow modders how to do certain things...

Couple questions:

1)  Based on reading through the last couple of pages - how many different champions (to know) does anyone think is a good starting foundation.  I am still fairly new and play mostly Malphite/Ashe with some Cait/Kat/Yi.  Is there a certain number of carry/support/tank/jungle/etc that would be good to shoot for.  I'm thinking that if I get into some more organized games in the future I want to be as beneficial as I can be.

2) Possibly a goofy one: Do most of you play with the camera locked or unlocked?  I started playing with the camera locked.  Once i was comfortable with the game I started playing unlocked because it gave me just a bit more FOV.  Now I find that the camera control can get hectic during big fights but I still like to be able to look around a bit.  I guess I am settling on locked for the most part with some looks around when I want to get a ranged ability off (or check out lanes, etc - but I mean more while I am playing).  I guess i am mostly just curious as to how people who have played much more than me manage the camera.

on Jan 22, 2013

1) I played with only three champs 'til level 20...

Cho, Kass, and Taric.

after that, I bought runes and bought more champs.

you should be fine with your current number.

organized games do require you to be flexible, but we do have a couple of regulars who can only play a few champs/roles, so you'd probably fit in once you're level 30.

2) unlocked 100% of the time. Being aware of the map is key, and if you can't see the jungler coming, you're probably going to die.

I press spacebar (temporarily lock camera) a ton, and that's how I refocus the camera on myself during movement and fights and things. I recommend practicing with it unlocked as much as you can, but until you get comfortable with the basics of the game, it should be fine to use locked camera.

well... now that I can understand you when you speak on mic...

1) Based on reading through the last couple of pages - how many different champions (to know) does anyone think is a good starting foundation.

Well, let me give you what you should shoot for, imo - know how every champion works.  That's pretty critical to understanding how to play against them.  As far as how many champs for a starting foundation, I'd say its a good idea to have at least 3 characters per role that you can play well.  You can certainly have less per role, but you want to have enough depth that you can, at the MINIMUM, have a champ you can actually play after bans in a given role.  Eg if I only played shen/malphite as a top laner and as those guys are often banned, I'd need more depth to be able to play in that lane.  Other stuff - if you play some of the lesser used adc's, you can typically count on getting them most games.  Eg you could potentially main ash and get to play her in like 90% of your games.  But if you only had 1 character you could use (and depending on how we are treating the in house games), that could result in a targeted ban.  I don't think you have to worry about that.  You could probably get by just being good with 2 adc's.

) Possibly a goofy one: Do most of you play with the camera locked or unlocked?

unlocked for me.  Remember, you can always press space bar to center the screen on your character.

I doubt anyone really wants to hear my opinion on things... I'm too silly when given a bit of leeway!

Anyhow, after reading those walls of text that the last couple of pages have been, if I go mid against Bryff in the future, are you saying that I am not permitted by in-house rules to pick Kha'zix or Talon to counter him? Kassadin is his only mid champ as far as I know, and Kassadin is not fun to play against with your standard mage, but would it be counted as picking on him if I went mid against him with someone that he could do nothing against?

I don't want to violate any rules or anything...

on Jan 22, 2013

going Kha'zix/Talon would be fine

My point earlier was that Sharp doesn't know how to play GP (the de-facto counter to Kass), and so that was part of the problem that was going on, since his shallow pool countered all of her mid champs. (and if we just banned Kass so he had to play something else, our mid lane would have done better each time).

on Jan 22, 2013

Hey- I am going to be saying a couple things about everything

1.  Sorry for coming off like I did.  Here's what I remember saying

"your ball is too slow" - that was an observation of me when sharp used the shield...q was able to hit before the ball chased back to ori.  I hadn't noticed this before-the other ori games I played they always seemed to have a shield when I tried harass.  I thought it was instantaneous.

When I said "go away, or I'm going to have to kill you"  .  Recently against a vlad I thought I needed more speed or something so I got T2 boots early, like, all the time before that I didn't care about the T2.  I realized it was adding a lot of damage, so when I got them in that game, knowing I was getting to the point where usually once in a game I can surprise the other mid before mid game, I meant it as a 'back off a bit, I'm strong'.  I didn't mean it as demeaning sharp's play.  I also said this particular thing because I was playing DG with lukas adro once.  He said "I'm going to kill you bryff!"  I was like, screw you lukas.  and I ended up dying, like, 3 times after every time he said this.  I found it funny (my sense of humor is goofed up-really I laugh at Bill Nye).  So I guess my impersonation wasn't working out.

and when I said "you just look too yummy" it was my way of saying 'hey I know there's nothing you can do since I'm countering you right now'

After you said hey, just stop talking, I realized you weren't on the same page.  I said I apologize.  Again, I do apologize for those comments.

2.  ban kass?  when I did fine in game 1, and everyone else was not doing good in lane, and I get quadra kill, it made me feel like I was doing something good.  For once.  So when you don't ban kass and sharp is mid ori again I was thinking "do they even care if I play kass?  Am I not dangerous enough?  Do they think I don't play kass well?"  So I just went kass again and intended to wreck everything-because I thought that.  Really, I was disappointed you didn't ban kass, made me feel like I didn't do anything for the team that game.

3.  I do play taric and I karthus/anivia are easy to farm with at long range, and playing kass a lot I've learned to cs under tower (well, maybe but I'm not at your level so how would I know) so yeah.  And I want to try more eve/jungle and teemo/top and doing adc.  There were a couple games I went corki and it worked out ok.  maybe I am helpless but I don't mind picking other champs/roles.

4.  countering kass with ad talon - please go for it.  Those matchups take a lot of practice.

5.  I don't have many champs-I have corki but I guess I'm only 33% win.  I would say malphite is easy-just build tanky and follow your team around.  But he's banned more or less always.  I only play 1 jungler, 1 top, with almost no practice, and 1 support with practice, 1 mid with significance, and other easy mids a slight bit.  and adc are all about right clicking and watching them die.  the only difference I see is if they have a relocate skill.

6.  Always unlocked camera.  sometimes when I'm moving and looking at other things I end up in the other team getting pwned and my team is like "wtf are you doing Bryff".

7.  Just so everyone is inside my head some more :?  .....  As a kass player I find matchups with instant clearing wave skills, sustain, and/or lots of ad to be the hardest to go against.  So like, mord, brand, gragas, lux, morg-they come up for like one second and kill wave.  I can't stay in wave or I get beaten, and a lot of the times the skill also hits me.  Really annoying.  Sustain is anyone that builds a hextech or something.  at least for hp.  Kass has sustainly mana but not so much hp.  So if I try spamming skills a lot they always sustain it back up while in exchanges I take more and more dmg.  and spamming aggressively chains r a lot and drains lots of mana-really annoying.  Ad-obvious since kass has low armor.  like a adc as a mid-they can easily harass and zone early, continually getting stronger and me not so much, late game I consider adcs stronger than me because I can warp in and qe, but if it doesn't kill them all the have to do is attack me and they lifesteal some and do lots of damage shortly and I get cced so I can't warp back out, so an adc mid I basically will stay weaker all game since I can never get earlier advantage.  And some matchups are hard depending on how the other person plays.  like leblanc.  Although I may have figured that one out. AND THE MOST HARD THING IS aggressive play early.  Cow, playing ziggs, did this with ease and I was destroyed.  Thinking on that note sometimes I think I do play like crap.

on Jan 22, 2013

Thinking on that note sometimes I think I do play like crap.

I don't think you play like crap, I just think that you play Kassadin, who is a champ who either crushes his lane, or does nothing at all. I think you need to practice some other mids. Karthus was one you mentioned? Karthus would be wonderful! He can feed all game and still do ridiculous damage late game...

anyhow, I think you should practice other champs with us, if you could.

Anyway, the thresh champ spotlight is live.  We will likely see thresh tomorrow imo.

Side note - we know janook from his time playing Demigod.  I think he was hired to do QA on LoL.  Not sure if he still does that or not.  Really nice guy, though.
