Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

Here's a guide I made

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

Just wanted to get some thoughts down here.

1 - is there anything all that exciting on the horizon atm in LoL.  I'm drawing a little bit of a blank.  I think lucian will be a great add to the adc pool and he's fun to play as anyway.

smeh... have more thoughts but no time atm.... i get back to this in a bit... busy day

on Jul 22, 2013

well i mean they released SGU like 5 days ago. what more do you want?

but they have a lot of reworks coming up (Rengar, Xerath, Heim, Olaf, Yorick, Skarner, Master Yi).

there is going to be a big overhaul of MR items next two patches.

there is the big S4 balance patch in 3-4 months which will include map geometry changes (to help jungler income), trying to address the vision problem in competitive games, and smooth out 2v1/3v1 fast push lanes that is dominating the competitive scene.

such a busy, annoying day... sigh.  still no time to jibba jabba.  :/

And off to eat... but 1st... this is on pbe

Turrets
Summary: Turrets will be harder to push down within the very early stages of the game. We’ve also corrected a minor bug where purple side inner turrets had slightly more armor than intended.

  • Outer turrets gain a flat armor bonus at the beginning of the game for 8 minutes
  • Outer turrets base Armor increased
  • Outer turrets no longer gain Armor over the first 8 minutes
  • Fixed a bug where purple side inner turrets had 10 more armor than intended

Lots of other tentative changes http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=3691287

also...

Summoner's Rift
Summary: All camps outside of buff camps will now spawn later in the game. Some experience has been moved back from the Ancient Golem and Lizard Elder to their Young Lizard spawns so now junglers will need to clear the full camp in order to hit level 2, as opposed to simply killing the buff monster.

Wolves

  • Spawn time increased to 2:05 from 1:55

Wraiths

  • Spawn time increased to 2:05 from 1:55

Golems

  • Spawn time increased to 2:05 from 1:55

Ancient Golem

  • Base experience granted reduced to 260 from 340

Lizard Elder

  • Base experience granted reduced to 260 from 340

Young Lizard

  • Base experience granted increased to 50 from 10
  • Base Health increased to 400 from 300

Context: Our first jungle modifications in 3.8 were not quite enough to enact the changes we wanted, so we’re pushing spawn timers even further to finish the job while fixing some other unintended side effects.
Junglers could completely cripple an opposing jungler – especially early on – without fully committing to confrontation by smiting the buff and escaping, or killing their opponent with the immediate level advantage. We like the importance of aggressive early game invades, but we want to make sure there is an appropriate amount of risk involved.

ok - so my day was a bit shit.  We have like torrential downpour during the day.  My car is apparently in the magical spot that fills up with insane amounts of water.  I go out for lunch today... forget umbrella... I'm like fuck it - don't mind getting a little wet.  Then I get to my car... while its downpouring and find out that the only way to get in is via 5-8 inches of water.  I'm like fuck it.  I end up putting both leather shoes right in the drink and my feet are soaked.  Eat lunch.  Take off shoes/socks and try to dry em out.  Doesn't work well... so soggy ass shoes all day.  Work is crazy busy all day long.  Not a fan.  Walk out to my rental car (pacov was in a wreck a few days ago)... I live in Ohio near ohio state where folks hate michigan.  I go out to my rental car and notice that it looks like its been keyed.  Prob happened a few days ago.  It was keyed because the fucking rental has Michigan plates.  So, I'm likely on the hook on top of my wreck pain for whatever that shit is because of some douche bags.  Then, I run home.  Having a little dinner party.  I grill outside in the rain.  All that ends and I get onto lol.  I play a few and have fun.  I end up going tiger udyr top against a teemo that I have no idea how to play in all honesty.  I do terribly.  I call out where the guy kicking my ass is and am told I'm needy for doing so.  I pick up multiple oracles at the teams request.  I sell some of my items for a bulwark + more oracles at the teams request.  Any engage that is lost is lost because of me.  I know this 30 seconds before my team does.  Still listen to grief knowing full well what the outcome of any failed engage will be.  Knowing I might go on tilt, I take my headset off and just listen to music.

Game ends.  Hedgie vanishes with brad.  Just me, cow, and karl.  This game, I feel like I play a decent game for the most part.  No major errors imo and decent play over all.  Downside is a shen vs udyr lane (our udyr) and a mid that ends up getting 100% of the kills bot - he gets majorly ahead but falls off big time while I need to farm out more power.  Cow ends up supporting as other roles that he plays were called.

The only thing I learned is that you damn well better ban fucking shen if you want to solo top phoenix udyr.  That's pretty clear to most now.  Anyway, had a shitty night for the most part.  Didn't appreciate the frequent call outs for me clearly losing lane in one game.  Did my best to do whatever I could to try to help the team by listening to the same folks that would continue to bitch me out (oracles/bulwark).  Shitty night made worse.  Felt like the rest of the team was doing really well, so I honestly don't understand why I was getting complained at for asking for help.  Pushing me to tilt when you are actually doing fine = ok... good idea - we will win this.  Anyway, obviously shouldn't have tried out tiger udyr that game.  My fault for that completely - so sorry for that.  Rubbing salt in wounds though... disappointing.  Tried my best to help out and not go on tilt at least. Minor victory for pacov.

Udyr is a common counterpick against Shen. You can count on Udyr to almost-always be able to stop the TP, Udyr can split well, and Udyr has reasonable sustain to deal with his sustain. Plus, Udyr mauls his face off level 1/2.

And i'm pretty sure that i have full right to leave champion select if i want. The way things were setup, i was gonna be the one to support you, you were already mad at me, and we know how that works out

Every lane was having a lot of pressure. Botlane me + brad were perma-pushed to tower in a lane that was mostly unwarded. Cow was against fucking Leblanc and she is miserable to lane against.

Sure, Teemo is probably also pretty miserable to lane against (esp as Udyr), but the fact of the matter is everylane was feeling a lot of pressure. You even got first blood with your red-pot cheese (but then fell way behind in levels somehow i guess).

Finally, since you always host the games (which is fine - you are the one who is formed the group), so you are always first pick. This means you get to pick whatever the fuck you want almost every game regardless of teamcomp. That also means that you need to lose your lane gracefully because you've taken it upon yourself to be the target of the other team's counterpicks 100% of the time.

Keep in mind WW going top after 2nd red was pretty risky since we are pushed to tower at the time and so the enemy team could have taken dragon while we were slow to respond, Fiddle support can tank dragon a little bit, Xin is alright at early dragons.

The thing that frustrated us the most is ... well you get thrashed, and then complain about Teemo trading objectives while we are doing objectives (like dragons + towers). (You were also basically a triaged lane - at one point you were 46 to 100+ CS on top of multiple kills behind).

No one told you to sell your items and then act like you're the victim (no one told you to build Bulwark - i said if you're falling super far behind, then building tank is probably a good idea rather than building damage).

You get frustrated Teemo standing in a place invisible but you don't buy pinks - you gotta buy pinks against a Teemo.

Cow made a ton of awesome plays that game and really kept us in the game by enabling so many objectives (mad props to him). He also suggested rotating top for awhile but that ended up not happening (iono why).

#me:

That game would have been buying Bulwark been a good idea (versus Morello + Locket)? Probably: they were all AP.

Should i have bought more pinks/oracles? Yeah. (that said: i'm not gonna burn a bunch of wards on warding our jungle if they have baron and are pushing mid - just wait for them at the tower plz instead of getting caught thx).

But, Morellonomicon made sense to me because of the multiple sources of burst + healing (Fiddle, Xin, Vayne all have large combat sustain, and big shields help agiainst the random mushroom or leblanc burst).

And we had two people who build Bulwark reasonably well (WW and Udyr).

And we had two people who build Bulwark reasonably well (WW and Udyr).

Yeah, I had multiple pieces of Aegis when Pacov bought it straight out.

But anyway, Udyr has a number of matchup problems.  That means, if you first pick him, you are going to get screwed sometimes.  And if you do get counterpicked, the rest of your team probably doesn't want to hear about it a whole lot.  You first picked Udyr, so you have to expect that these things are going to happen.

Also, that Phoenix build sucks REALLY BADLY in a lot of situations.  I'm sure that it works well in some very specific cases, but it really has to be used with care.  Udyr is good against Shen.  That Phoenix build is not.  If you are going to insist on first picking Udyr (who already has matchup problems) and then going to insist on going Phoenix (which you are indicating when you say that you shouldn't have gone Tiger), you are going to just screw you team a lot (like the 0/10/0 Udyr did in our final game).

In any case, hedge is probably correct that I should have paid less attention to your lane and more attention to bot.  I did kill that Fiddles a few times on ganks, but I wasn't really putting Vayne behind, which was the bigger problem.  You actually received a pretty large amount of attention from myself and mid (we had multiple successful ganks on Teemo), but were still wanting more and more.

on Jul 23, 2013

Sorry if I busted your balls pacov. You probably had your headset off already when I apologized/sympathized with your teemo lane opponent. Teemo is pretty stupid for udyr regardless of what build you go. I don't think there is a build you could of went that would of made much of a difference vs teemo.

That being said I do hate this new udyr build that appears to be flavor of the month as I have seen it 4-5 time already. I personally feel that udyr's ability and kit are made to be a tanky initiator/sticking to opponents carries and not split pushing. I have always seen him as a jungler and not a top laner. He has his place top but I personally feel he should only be played tiger top even then I would much rather have an udyr jungler than an udyr top laner.

oh... I don't think you've ever seen my tiger udyr build before.  That phoenix split lane is certainly flavor of the month though.  T'was popularized by trick2g (guy who's nunu resulted in the nunu explosion).  Once folks get over SGU, you'll start to see less and less of that split push build.

Thought I'd address this one - you did notice that I didn't say anything negative about you buggering off though, right?  I figured you had your reasons - same as I had mine for taking the headset off.  No complaints there from me.

re: aegis - maybe I heard folks wrong - I felt like I was getting my chops busted for not having aegis, so I picked it up at what I thought was the request of at the very least hedgie.  Curious to hear what was actually said - will have to take a quick listen after work.  The ONLY reason that I picked it up, period, was that I felt like I was being harassed for not doing so.  Maybe I was already strangely agitated and misunderstood, though.

awuffleablehedgie
you gotta buy pinks against a Teemo.

I also seem to recollect folks wanting me to buy oracles instead - maybe I heard that wrong.  Getting your ass handed to you and then your balls busted by teammates does tend to get the tilt process going anyway, so its certainly possible that I misunderstood what folks were asking.

on Jul 23, 2013

Bulwark: Brad Wong said something along the lines of "why don't we have bulwark? we need bulwark against these mushrooms". (i also had like a null mantle + bead ... not very close to Aegis but 600 gold into it).

Then Karl said something about defending blade of the ruined king. Then somehow i got to you and i did say "when you fall behind you should build tank, not damage", although i at least meant it in the "this would have been a good thing to start doing 10 minutes ago" not in the sense of "build it right now".

Your first Oracles @ around 20 was Brad Wong saying Oracles is the counter to Teemo and it was a good idea - at the same time i was saying just bring a pink ward and so could sneak it into that bush he keeps going invisible in. However, when you have lost both your towers, well, things happened too late to make up for it with just one pink ward.

#me leaving:

i guess the tone of the paragraph/sentense structure led me to believe you were a little bitter/frustrated about Brad and i leaving. But not super mad.

#ballbusting:

i think that we've all fed really bad here and there, and so i don't think we get mad that you were struggling that game. if you joke about it, i think we generally feel alright about it? But when you have a lot of negative things to say about the lane, then it just gets really frustrating because you lost your lane and then want a lot of team resources. And if you want a lot of resources from the team, be sure to pay it back later (eg, that one time i was frustrated because we had the ability to get an inhibitor but you ended up getting top tower instead). Obviously buying those oracles at 30 minutes+ was "paying it back" but at that point we were maybeee gonna win but after that partial ace we never really got back into the game.

in the future i will try to keep critique a little lower during the game and try to keep it on here instead (people are obviously less sensitive here), and when i do have things to say about people usually it is meant in a high-level "do this next time" way, not "omg you fucking suck noob feeder" way. if you aren't feeling very well or whatever, i won't be offended if you don't invite me and instead invite someone else.

while i'll say i'm sorry for contributing to a more frustrating evening for you, please keep the above in mind as well.
