Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

i guess the tone of the paragraph/sentense structure led me to believe you were a little bitter/frustrated about Brad and i leaving. But not super mad.

well - to be fair, I wasn't thrilled, but I understood.  If the decision is made to avoid more of a toxic environment, then great.  If you thought I was going to be on tilt and choose to avoid, hey - no objections from me.  Matter of fact, if dropping keeps things from escalating, then I think that's even praiseworthy.  Still kind of sucks to have 2 pals bugger off after a bad game though - i get it though

awuffleablehedgie
i think that we've all fed really bad here and there, and so i don't think we get mad that you were struggling that game. if you joke about it, i think we generally feel alright about it? But when you have a lot of negative things to say about the lane, then it just gets really frustrating because you lost your lane and then want a lot of team resources. And if you want a lot of resources from the team, be sure to pay it back later (eg, that one time i was frustrated because we had the ability to get an inhibitor but you ended up getting top tower instead). Obviously buying those oracles at 30 minutes+ was "paying it back" but at that point we were maybeee gonna win but after that partial ace we never really got back into the game.

You say quite a bit here and I'm going to jibba jabba a smidge.  Here's one thing I honestly never get (note that the rest of this is me genuinely trying to figure something out).  Let me back track to a couple nights back to set this up.  So, we play a game with socialist ryan - old demigod fella - anyway, if our 1st game, I'm doing my udyr top phoenix stuff and its going pretty well.  Well, ryan morphs into what is probably the best example of a shot caller I've ever played with for this game (note - this game... not quite so much on a few of the following, but hey - this game).  The guy is calling shots great left and right.  Now, I have a habit of doing something that I think plays extremely well into folks that are shot callers.  I call out things that are going on around me when I notice them or give lane status, etc.  In that game for instance, I'm calling out this and that (top lane is back, omw bot with tp, omw to you, their red just spawned, their jungler is top, etc).  Now, all of that is either filler info or useful intel.  Eg if I say their red just spawned and their jungle is on the other side of the map, well that helps.  People might not have seen what I saw, so sharing that info could be a bunch of help.  The same way someone calling out jungle is bot when I'm top lane, etc.  Those are really great call outs that I might not be aware of and could embolden me to do this or that.  Anyway, its just a good thing for us to share in voice chat (provided folks don't get annoyed at hearing that sort of thing).  Anyway, so I'm a bit in the habit of doing this.

So, last night I do the same sort of thing calling out this or that in lane where I'm getting my arse whooped.  I don't think I'm shouting or demanding (though I recollect 1 time making a snide comment about karl coming top) - I'm sharing intel on what's happening around/in the lane, etc.  Onto the part that I find confusing - some folks seem to get quite pissed off when I share about things like that... maybe I'm talking too much?  Maybe I have a negative sounding tone?  Maybe I'm actually bitching?  I really don't know.  Sometimes a similar sort of thing happens unrelated to me having a bad game and I'll call out something and someone will just lose their shit.  Doesn't really help without having a particular example I guess.

anyway, re: that inhibitor play - honestly, I just play bad when I get wound up.  Completely agree that getting an inhib would have been the better move of course, but I was out of sorts by that time.  A bit of a cross between trying way to hard to be helpful and trying to take objectives but not thinking clearly enough.  Even when I sold my silly arse BotRK for aegis, I wasn't trying to troll.  I felt pressure to do so and do whatever I could to help out.  Certainly wish I would have gone for that inhib instead.

awuffleablehedgie
in the future i will try to keep critique a little lower during the game and try to keep it on here instead (people are obviously less sensitive here), and when i do have things to say about people usually it is meant in a high-level "do this next time" way, not "omg you fucking suck noob feeder" way.

I don't really mind critiques here and there and usually consider such things coaching.  Obviously, if I'm getting completely roflstomped, I might be a little more sensitive, eh?  Maybe try to be more thoughtful in those, thankfully somewhat rare, situations.  Nothing better than getting crushed then knowing that whatever happens next will be blamed on you.

awuffleablehedgie
while i'll say i'm sorry for contributing to a more frustrating evening for you, please keep the above in mind as well.

Thanks.  Just kind of a bummer.  Life rolls along and I haven't submerged my leather shoes in water yet today.  Things are looking up.

. And if you want a lot of resources from the team, be sure to pay it back later (eg, that one time i was frustrated because we had the ability to get an inhibitor but you ended up getting top tower instead).

This is a point I would like to expand upon.

Everybody loses their lane sometimes.  I surely do quite a bit when I play in lanes.  The question is what to do about it.

Pacov's line of reasoning is generally that he should try and catch up.  That is, lots of split pushing and farming - this will often be an ongoing process 30-40 minutes into the game.  This has also caused a lot of complaints from myself and others.

I would argue that the opposite is, in general, more appropriate.  That is, group up with your team, and give your team a chance to do something.  You don't have to carry every game - just give your team a chance to do something.

The big thing is that if somebody is off farming and trying to catch up, the rest of the team can't push what advantage they might have.  They can't do anything 4v5, so other lanes' advantage is totally nullified, and chances are the person who is behind isn't going to catch all the way up either.

My personal feeling is that I've been robbed of a chance to do something when I have an advantage because somebody is not with the team and trying to catch up on their own.  That makes me grumpy - if you fall behind, at least give your team a chance to work their advantage.

This is something that I've brought up before - games are typically won by teams and teamfights, not individual actions.  When things are going bad, just group up.  Keep it simple.  Try and make plays as a team.  In my opinion, the correct move is rarely to try more exotic strategies as an individual.

Thats not to say that split pushing is always wrong, but it has to be used with great care.

Now, I don't want to sound too negative toward Pacov here since he does many great things in game.  But this is one thing that happens quite a bit and causes us great frustration, so it probably needs to be said.

Then Karl said something about defending blade of the ruined king.

I actually said the opposite - I said that BotRK shouldn't be built with Tiger Udyr that much.

Now, that may sound hypocritical since I build it a lot when I jungle (tiger) Udyr.  But they key is when I build it.

Tiger Udyr scales VERY well with AD.  He scales very poorly with AS (thats what Phoenix Udyr wants).  BotRK has a lot of gold tied up in AS, so its not the perfect buy.

However, Bilgewater builds into BotRK and does have it's money focused in AD (plus the useful slow).  So, Tiger Udyr can build Bilgewater early, then finish BotRK late.  IMO, there is no reason to rush BotRK on Tiger Udyr.  The passive %hp damage isn't going to be that useful early game anyway (especially against a Teemo).

I'm sharing intel on what's happening around/in the lane, etc. Onto the part that I find confusing - some folks seem to get quite pissed off when I share about things like that... maybe I'm talking too much? Maybe I have a negative sounding tone? Maybe I'm actually bitching?

Its a tone of voice thing.  You might think that you are just relaying facts, but your tone is generally upset and exasperated.  And you tend to relay bad things happening in your lane very frequently.  When you combine that with the tone, you send a very negative message to your team.

Also, if your team doesn't immediately react to your updates, you will yell at us.  A lot.  For example, if you tell me that top is getting pushed, but I choose to defend a mid push instead, I know that I am going to hear complaints about it.

yah - no i caught that you were not a fan of me having botrk.  I don't relaly have any defense or intention of defending w/e build I went as tiger - believes meh

ah - ok.  I'll try to work on that.  Something I do pretty commonly, so it will take some work methinks.

i was half-watching that game (he was amumu right?)

Well the difference that game was he was camping your lane which i'm sure you noticed

But most importantly, he was making plays the entire game (which so happened to include camping your lane and getting you ahead with crazy behind-the-tower dives)

That game, Cow and Karl made tons of plays. Cow had so many good roams and counterroams and picked up so many kills. We converted those kills into objectives (mid tower/bot tower + dragon).

Comparatively, you were asking for 2 people to chase around teemo and eat a bunch of mushrooms so you could get red/5 CS.

That isn't really a "play", it doesn't accomplish anything except very briefly relieve some pressure and it doesn't turn into an advantage across the map.

(that said: obviously it's a good idea to show your face around the map sometimes just because people can't play as aggressive if junglers are near, esp if their flash is down (or, for example, a Barrier/Ignite Fizz who wants to slaughter your mid). Teemo with a forest of mushrooms and no pink wards has the equivalent of like 15 flashes).

4 solo queue ranked games at gold IV 0 lp and 4 wins.  Off to bed, but setup for my promo series to gold III.  Good stuff.  Missed playing with you fellas, but I have been kinda wanting to get back into ranked more.  Would really, really, love to hit plat this season.  A bit of work to do there.  I'm actually wondering if I might promote to gold II if I win here - getting like 25, 35, 37 lp for my wins tonight.  Anyway, got to play jungle, adc, support, jungle tonight.  Most difficult game to me anyway was playing support.  Felt like I performed pretty well in the games though.  Super impressed by the thresh support I had helping me out in my adc game.  Guy was pretty damn amazing.  Anyway, off to bed. Night all!

A bit of a vayne nerf on pbe - Final hour ( R ) cooldown increased to 100/85/70 from 70

on Jul 24, 2013

some revised changes for olaf on pbe

Olaf Changes, V1.1

Undertow

  • Slow no longer decays

  • Now has a minimum throw distance of 400 units

  • Axes now stick in walls and structures if they would land inside impassable terrain

Basically as I said last time, tuned the min distance down a bit, now the necessary movement to pick up an Axe is under 100 units.

Current status of wall sticking is that it has been mostly removed, but I have put checks in place to see if an Axe would land in impassible terrain and if it would, it instead backtracks and finds the last wall it passed through and sticks there. Essentially trying to get the best of both worlds, enabling 0 distance Axes for junglers, preventing you from throwing unretrievable Axes, and still retaining the scouting power of Axes.

Vicious Strikes

  • Mana cost reduced to 25 from 40/45/50/55/60

  • Base damage increased to 20/35/50/65/80 from 7/14/21/28/35

  • HP -> damage ratio removed

  • Lifesteal reduced to 8/10.5/13/15.5/18% from 9/12/15/18/21%

  • Spellvamp removed

Now provides 1% enhanced healing from all sources for every 2% health Olaf is missing during the duration

Spellvamp still seems to be adding really esoteric and misleading power onto this ability so I'm trying an iteration with the spellvamp removed. While I get that players feel clever for smiting with Vicious Strikes up to get bonus healing, I think that adds unnecessary burden of knowledge on Olaf's opponents and gives us the ability to more directly buff his jungle if it feel underpowered. Not to mention the spellvamp off smite was getting kinda silly with the new amped healing mechanic (~300+ burst healing out of nowhere late game).

I also feel like this was leading players to improperly use W before Q in chasing scenarios, though whether that was the spellvamp or just the AD remains to be seen with this iteration. I'm fine with W -> Q being situationally useful, but with a tightly windowed lifesteal/berzerker steroid, I don't like players feeling compelled to spend 40+% of the duration catching up to their long range Axe.

The HP scaling was limiting Olaf's build paths and causing his power to spike at level 13 rather than transition smoothly to 18, so I've removed it in favor of larger base damage numbers. I'm guessing these are too high right now, but I'd rather test them at too high to make sure they feel good and work than to discard the idea do to undertuned numbers.

Lifesteal scaled slightly down due to early feedback that his sustain was feeling pretty silly in conjunction with the new healing mechanic.

Ragnarok

  • Mana Cost removed

  • Cooldown changed to 120/100/80 from 100

  • Active duration changed to 5 from 6

  • New Passive Added: Olaf gains 10/25/40 Armor and Magic Resist passively

  • Active Changed: Olaf removes all disables from himself and becomes immune to them for the next 5 seconds. During this time, he loses the passive portion of this skill and gains 15/2025% lifesteal (PLACEHOLDER MECHANIC).

Still pretty unhappy with this skill.

Double passive bonus was going by unnoticed, which points to attack speed being pretty useless on this ult. I'm not really happy with just throwing more lifesteal on here, but I'll openly admit that I'm having trouble finding a healthy mechanic to put on the active portion of this skill. Right now, in lieu of a stronger idea, I've put on lifesteal mostly to drive home that focusing Olaf as a team during his ult is strong, but trying to duel him is a bad idea, and partially to proof of concept Olaf's lifesteal tank pattern by boosting his LS number to a somewhat obnoxious level to see how it feels to play as and against. Again, I can't stress this enough, this mechanic is intended as a placeholder while I work on finding the right mechanics that preserve the intended play of Olaf and counterplay versus Olaf.

well... 6 game solo queue ranked win streak.  Hit gold III tonight.  Was hoping I might get jumped to gold II - ah well.

on Jul 25, 2013

ooo - also on a 6 game win streak in ranked - zen god.  He's currently gold 3 as well.

edit - ugh... i don't think game 7 is meant to be... been specatating.  he's stuck as support lux with the worlds worst vayne (82 cs at 16 min vs cait at 148 cs).  Enemy team is up 26k gold vs 17k gold.  Not looking good.  Awesome win if they can pull it off, but I'm guessing it might be a surrender at 20 based on what I see the vayne doing.
