Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

Here's a guide I made

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

awuffleablehedgie

well if it's "your" experiment you're usually fine i don't think there was a problem with that Riven+Aatrox game we played awhile ago.

If we go double Bruiser bot in a game, I don't want to hear complaints from Pacov that we're having a hard time taking towers and not winning team fights later on when it was his decision to not have a Marksman on the team.  And then I don't wanna hear you and Karl lecture Pacov for the entire game and repeat "This is why you need an ADC..." over and over.  And then...

If we play a game where there's some sorta non-meta experiment, it would be nice to have everyone to not get worked up and just try and have fun with it.

on Jul 27, 2013

So, I'm watching some replays of games and something occurred to me that I don't always see supports doing.  If you have a ward and there's a kill op, but whoever the target is just made it into bush cover, ward that freaking bush immediately.  It can be tough to react so quickly to something like that, but a move like that is something that can separate good supports from avg ones.  In related news, I'm viewing the vid from last night (last game of the night) where hedgie got a wee bit pissed at me to see if I was out of line or not - then that stuck out to me.  Missed kill op due to lack of vision.

supports need to have pinks in their kit most of the time early/mid game.  Just 1 will do.  Should be very rare circumstances where you don't have a pink when one is needed for an objective like dragon.

ah - so now I see what pissed hedgie off.  I'll make a clip of the whole thing for those that are interested. So, a few things happened.  Most/all were bad decisions on my part.  Here's the setup.  Our blue is up and then enemy team has warded it literally every single time all game long.  I'm keeping track of when the enemy support wanders off to ward and keep everyone up to speed on when I see or think its just been warded.  Anyway, there's a general understanding that blue is warded about a minute before it spawns.

OK. So our team just gets dragon and then backs away from a fight after killing the enemy annie.  Hedgie calls out that he's oom and karl is low hp, so we gracefully disengage from the fight.  Both bryff and I go back to base to shop.  Karl, concerned that he's about to counter jungled again (he was right) decides to go check out and try to take his red before he backs with 50% hp.  Hedgie decides to stay in lane for wave clear or something though he was really low mana instead of recalling.  Karl gets countered, loses his buff, but manages to get out without dying.  Hedgie tells karl he can't help due to low mana and then backs.

So, this is the point where all the stuff that pisses hedgie off happens.  I'll start by saying that I really think hedgie should have just backed earlier and returned to lane at the same time sona/pacov backed, but instead choose to stick around try to farm close to oom against shen.  That, imo, is actually the decision that led to chain reaction of awful events. If he had gone back then, there would have been no need for anyone to cover his mid tower.  BUT - onto where I do some terrible things.  So, I'm thinking we have our mid push problem handled (quite foolishly, I might add).  I call out that there's good farm bot and that I'm omw (our bot tower is still up along with the enemy bot tower btw).  While this a true statement, I should have gone to mid to push the wave and defend the tower.  Not sure why it didn't click in my head that I was the one that needed to cover that - should have, but did not.  I also add that saying something like pacov can you cover mid would have simplified the process and completely avoided what happened next.  As you later hear in the vid, it sounds like folks wanted me to give up mid tower and instead have farmed bot.

OK - so I make ANOTHER great decision next.  I see that mid tower is getting wrecked, so I change course.  Realizing that at this time, I won't be able to help save the tower because i didn't head out there initially and instead started heading bot... and knowing that blue was warded and would be the next stop for the enemy team, I head to blue and am about to clear it.  At this time, I'm questioned for this decision and choose not to take blue... which, in my mind and perhaps not others, means the enemy team will very likely get blue now.  So, I had a chance to keep an objective out of the enemies hands that I don't believe we could have secured otherwise.  Had I followed through with that, I would have very safely taken blue and been fine.  Instead, I end up in the think of things.

Anyway, I still kind of think that going for the blue was actually the best decision.  We knew that it was warded all game.  We also know that the enemy team was in the area including the jungler that likely had smite up.  The contention with my decision is that we'd have somehow been able to get that blue to anivia if I stayed out of the area completely.  Which I don't think was all that possible.  If you notice the timing and positioning, anvia wasn't in a position to be able to move towards blue safely, but that depending on shen/udyr's positioning.  If blue wasn't magically warded like it had been all game, then you see how annie/udyr/shen were beelining to blue.

Anyway, the whole thing started because I didn't realize I needed to cover mid instead of going bot to farm/defend (which was where their adc/support were headed as you can see in the clip).  Hedgie choose to stay mid for some extra farm after calling out the disengage from dragon because he was oom.  Due to that, the only way we could have kept mid tower was for me to forgo all farm/defense of the bot lane... which is a pretty big price to pay for the extra 5 cs hedgie got by sticking around mid a bit longer.

To continue, after I die in the fight due to bad positioning and general wtf are you talking about frustration, karl and hedgie then take the blue that is still there now, and proceed to give up the bot tower that has a huge wave and an adc/support working it over.

Anyway, what follows for the rest of the vid is hedgie and I arguing a bit with karl backing him up.  Bryff and I make short work of the enemy bot tower.  Janna then wanders off to group mid leaving draven behind vs me and bryff.  Draven starts to bugger off towards mid where the red of their team is now grouped and I'm slow to get to mid - clearly a mistake on my part.  I call out where I think draven is and bryff tells me he's already at mid (he's not).  The next thing I see is draven popping up trying to 1v1 me... which he fails out... kind of bad to tell your adc that the other adc is at mid and then have him magically appear on top of you.  This results in draven getting 1-2 free hits on me when he appears out of no where.  still won the fight, though.  Anyway, hedgie then asks me not to farm bot anymore.  we go blahblah and eventually hedgie leaves the call.  I'm summarizing here and being incredibly general as twitch is lagging up a storm for me and it would take like 30 minutes to watch 4 more min of the vid.  Anyway, I'll make that highlight clip now.

oo - it looks like karl will hit has promo series from silver II to silver 1 if he wins the game he is in right now.  Good luck!

I'm streaming and watching the game now

edit - karl's team just crush it.  Enemy team gives up at 23 min or so.  He's now in his promo series to silver I - game 1 going on.  Hopefully he hit's silver 1 tonight.

I'm going to start playing some ranked now - in gold III promo series (just to gold II or gold I with 2 wins).  This is game 1.  Steaming for anyone interested.

on Jul 27, 2013

Hey pacov.  So, I think the mid tower would have died whether you went to it initially or not.  They had waves and would have won a dive, since karl and hedge couldn't support.  The second tower would have been fine, since hedgie would have been back.  After that, if the enemy decided to give blue a go, we could have defended because we would have our bot tower, and I warded it also.  Which is why I thought going to our bot, like their adc/support would have been best.  We were ahead of them so we would be able to def.

My thoughts.

on Jul 27, 2013

doh - so karl is 0/1 in his promo series atm.  On his 2nd game.  still going on.

I'm 1/1 in my promo series. about to play my last promo game.  Fingers crossed/

on Jul 28, 2013

lost 1st promo series 1/2.  Played again and immediately back to promo series.  won game 1 of promo series.  Starting game 2 now

on Jul 28, 2013

pacov is now gold II.  Hunny hit his promo from gold V to gold IV.  Playing 1 more then calling it a night.

on Jul 28, 2013

we lost the last game.  Riot servers seemed to have some issues for a little bit.  I had like 4-5 seconds of being unable to move (had a potential kill op when that happened too :/).  My support complained almost all game of lag issues.  Kind of crap, but maybe that was the problem.  Anyway, I end the night at 0 lp in gold II.  Hunny, sadly, ends the night with 0/1 in his best of 3 promo to gold IV.

oh - and karl kept playing until he hit his promo series again.  So, when karl plays ranked next, he's starting his promo series for silver 1.  GL KARL!

on Jul 28, 2013

Hey pacov. So, I think the mid tower would have died whether you went to it initially or not.

Honestly, I don't know about that.  I think I would have made it there fast enough to keep those jerks off it, but maybe not.  I still think I made a big mistake not running to mid based on how things went down.  I def feel like I could have had a big impact and kept the tower long enough for hedgie to get back.  Once he made it back, that wave clear would have kept the tower up.

Alot of stuff in hindsight crap.  I think I can make a really, really good argument that hedgie should have backed when you and I did instead of going for a few cs.  He would have been at the tower at the same time I could have potentially been there.  And if we are talking about champs that can save towers... well, anvia is stronger than even a fed vayne.  I also still think that grabbing blue was a decent call.. but I also COMPLETELY understand that I want the blue on the bird man and I know (as I went over) that they had been countering our blue left and right.  What I WANTED to do was what I called out in voice chat - go bot for some farm.  If you think for a second that hedgie wasn't annoyed that I went towards bot instead of mid... well... I'd be very surprised.  Pretty sure he just held his tongue when he was going to complain about me doing that.  And I agree that I should have gone mid.  Do correct me if I'm wrong, though.

on Jul 28, 2013

i was at base when it happened

mid was pretty much gone and i was saying at the end that you should have just gone bot instead.

the problem was that that lost teamfight led to a second lost mid tower (later on, which lead to a later lost inhib tower \: and i died too because of no protection mid with zero toers), as well as a lost outer tower.

You could have easily been able to just farm it out botlane and protected that tower, blue wasn't in any threat. Tanking it and then grouping up for Annie/Shen 4v5 combo was what started the snowball that game.

on Jul 28, 2013

2 min 5 seconds or so in the vid.  "you gave up my mid tower because you wanted blue."

http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/264620

at the end though... yah - we agree a little more...

on Jul 28, 2013

the second mid tower yeah?
