Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

Heya, Jackho!  wb - if the game you are referring to is Demigod, then all I can say is that the folks that I typically played with have all moved along and I personally no longer play DG.

on Nov 11, 2013

I just did 2 test runs on PBE.  Setup - Lee with a jungle AS setup + jungle masteries.  The test is to give an idea of how quickly you generate income with the new jungle items.

Play style = I live in the jungle and do absolutely nothing else.  Camp to camp, shop when appropriate (2-3 shop visits over 16 minutes).  Shop 1 once you have enough for boots + either madreds and the spirit component.  Shop 2 when you have enough for wriggles or a completed spirit item.

Note - wriggles is currently 200 gold cheaper than the spirit items.

Run 1 - wriggles at 8:40.  As of 10:10 I had 100 bonus gold from the item.  At 16:39, I solo'd dragon.  This gave me a total of 618 gold over the total of the run.

Run 2 - completed spirit item (the one that give tenacity) at 9:05.  Completed dragon at 16:53. Total bonus gold is 302.

Things to consider - staying in your jungle 100% of the time (0 counter play via ganks/counter jungling) is stupid, ofc. With the exception of solid counter jungling on specific targets, I'm pretty sure the ABSOLUTE most gold you could get from wriggles at 16:39 including a dragon really is 618 gold.  I don't think this is a realistic possibility.  Probably 200-300 gold is possible with standard play including ganks - again, the passive on wriggles is useless outside of the jungle, so any time in lane where you fail a gank is punished quite a bit.

On the other hand, the spirit item actually rewards you for ganking lanes due to how it stacks.  You see I had less gold at 16:53 on a farm only situation by about 300 gold.  Again, you wouldn't just be farming in a normal game ofc.  But the beauty of this new passive is that during times where you aren't working your jungle, you gain stacks so that every time you kill a larger jungle creep you could get 40 gold bonus.  It's actually pretty well balancing imo so that it rewards you for making a gank here and there, even if the gank is unsuccessful.

on Nov 11, 2013

note that you don't get both GP10 items (i think). Conservation and the Wriggles 40% don't stack. The only GP10 that stacks is Avarice Blade.

Although Wriggles has really bad combat stats, it is decent on autoattack-heavy melee champs. They'll use the AS reasonably well, and the armor is a niceness for teamfights (typically against marksman). Shyvana/Nocturne/Master Yi.

The rationale with the Season3  jungle was to give them less gold/exp, but give junglers super gold efficient items that they could afford that were overloaded with stats so they could expierence stat progression on a limited budget. Since  you also spend about 700 gold on regen/jungling stats which was - in theory - supposed to make laners not want to buy it. Plus, the items were really slot inefficient, so laners wouldn't want to clog their slots with Spirit of the Elder Lizard. We all know how that worked out.

The rationale is different in Season 4. Rather than trying to balance two sets of items with different gold efficients, Riot decided that jungling items were just gonna be giving a roughly equal amount of stats, but give GP10... so that junglers could (eventually) buy the same items as laners. The jungle does require an investment, however, and it does take time for the GP10 investment to "mature". We'll see how often Dorans Blade junglers work out. (In my tests: not well. The Wight camp and the golem camp is just too much damage to tank without health pots).

I personally preferred the Season 3 rationale (even if it could have been tweaked to prevent laners from buying it).

on Nov 12, 2013

I'm slow at reading and going to bed, but quick clarification then I read in the AM.  My test were for INDIVIDUAL jungle items.  Not combining them.  You can only get 1 gold item.  If you said otherwise, I figure out in the AM and reply.

Posted this somewhere else as well and someone pointed out that you do get extra income in the form of the wriggles ward... its a lower life ward, so its like 30 gold per base imo.

still awake but not reading pacov says this... you all should look up madcast gaming and consider joining.  I have like 30 new people on my pals list with about 6 players that are much better than me and 8 or so that are way worse.  My player base expanded quite a bit and I think  most of you could find a home there and have more and more people to play with.

on Nov 12, 2013

my bad i thought you said you bought 2

wriggles gives 40% more gold from farming the jungle. It's also way cheaper than the other items (300 gold than Ancient golem)

well another win as urgot - less pretty this time (was bot) - 17/9/9.  Still ok k/d ratio i guess..

Urgot is really underpowered right now... sad

So, there's a thread over on madcast that I thought I'd replicate here to get some feedback/stories from you folks.  How'd you do in season 3?

Goals - "Did you meet yours? or did you not even have any expectations coming into this season. Do you have any goals for the new upcoming season?"

My goal was to hit plat, which I did. I was actually gold prior to the reset, then absolutely tanked my placement games (note - this is not a good thing to do).  I ended up placed in bronze 1.  So, this season I went all the way from bronze 1 to plat IV.  Silver, by far, was the most difficult to climb out of for me... but I think that's primarily because I was mostly running jungle/support.  Gold wasn't too bad of a climb (by then I was maining adc/jung).

Goals for the new season

  • Get back to plat ASAP if the adjustment bounces me down to gold
  • Hit diamond
  • Be on an ever improving ranked team with folks of a similar mindset

Stuff that is good to know.

PRESEASON: - Once ranked ques come back up preseason is initiated. - Sometime next week the next patch is coming out with some season 4 changes and balances. - Preseason is used to get people familiar with the changes and new gameplay before jumping into ranked - You will not have placement matches for preseason. - Think of preseason as an extension to season 3, you can still climb in MMR, which is big. - Preseasons MMR will be used to put you in your placement matches, so you should play to win in preseason so you can get higher up in your placements and come out with a better chance of getting a better rank. - Take preseason seriously and don't screw around with, learn the changes, climb MMR, get good for start of season 2014

SEASON 2014: - Season 2014 will initiate in a month or so after preseason has started. - You will recieve a soft reset of MMR and then play your placement games. (End of preseason MMR+1200)/2 is the MMR that will be used in your placements. Do good in your placements go up in rank! - That's pretty much the basics of the new stuff, any other questions post them below and I'll be happy to answer.

Eh, the people seem nice and everything, but the games I've played with them are really casual with a big spread in player ability.  Thats lead to a lot of games where people are just goofing around.  Which is fine, but I tend to like to do things a bit more seriously, so I didn't really see myself as a great fit.  If they had a more slightly more serious wing, I'd look into them.

on Nov 12, 2013

well, I'm trying to get involved with a ranked 5's team.  It sounds like in house games are often very goofy due to varied skill levels.  They aren't in house games like we'd normally play.  They could become that way though.

on Nov 12, 2013

Karl, I'll try and send you some more invites when they've got some competitive games brewing.  I know that's more your thing but you've been busy with ranked haven't been available when we have the Gold and above crew going.  Hopefully you don't think the games are more trollish than they really are, but to be fair there has been a lot of Heimer supports running around recently for some reason.

on Nov 13, 2013

there is a direct correlation to the frequency of my heimer support and the skill level of my adc.  Skill cap inspires the donger in many cases.

on Nov 13, 2013

LOL  Fair enough.

Just remember that the casual-competitive vibe can swing either way with these games, and playing non-meta stuff might help steer the night's games more in the Maokai Mid direction.

on Nov 13, 2013

Yeah - I honestly don't think I have much chance in influencing the in house decisions (now anyway).  There hasn't been a game where I don't hear someone saying I'm going to try X character for the 1st time or I just unlocked X.  And then there are weak players calling roles they certainly shouldn't take.. level 9 account?  Sure, you go ahead and play adc against plats.  Enter the donger and I can at least keep the lane alive.  I'm doing my best to roll with the punches, but I can tell you one thing... its not even remotely fun to try to run support in those types of games outside of "unique" picks.  Sure... let me play janna, have you die, then watch our tower get crushed.  Good times.

hmm... think I'll vent for a moment.  So, I've got 2 candidates that really like me.  They are very weak players in need of much improvement and I don't think either of them truly realize that.  Now, I'm all positive and nice and try to be encouraging to them in game.   This attitude doesn't convey the truth - I'd rather not play with folks new to the game or players with a significant skill level difference between myself and them.  You ever notice how the group I run with regularly are all of similar skill level?  That's 100% by design.

Anyway, because I'm nice and considerate and often encouraging in these in house games to these folks, they of course want to continue to play with me.  But I don't want to be a dick and be like... no... me no want to play with you.  I also don't have the luxury of being in an in house and telling folks that we shouldn't invite X person so it will be a better game.  The other folks don't appear to care that there are some very weak players in the mix, so they just make with the goofy picks/builds. Anyway, not really to my liking, but rolling with it is great.  What I really do want is serious, fairly balanced games, 5v5, with folks of similar skill level or better than me.  I'm sure I haven't had that yet in the in house games... maybe not even in normal pick ups.

As I get to know folks more, I think making a suggestion that X player probably should sit this one out won't be such a "dickish" comment.

Let me ask a question - so let's say I shoot you an invite. You join the lobby, see 3 other people and a level 9 player that wants to run ADC.  Now, some of you would simply be like - nope, on second thought, I need to do X.  Then they quickly leave the lobby and that's that.  The reality is that you just don't want to play with that level 9 fellow, so you bugger off to avoid that exciting experience.  Are you being a dick?  I actually struggle with situations like this where I end up playing games that I would rather not for reasons like that because I figure I am being a dick if I choose to drop out.  With the madcast folks, I'll shoot out an invite to someone that I'd like to play with.  Then, I'll give invite rights and they will invite whoever... quite possibly a lower level fellow.  And now I'm in a spot.  If I bugger off while I'm hosting, that's a bit rude.  I don't know... maybe I'll just start pulling the same bs others do - "oh - I need to sit this one out for bs reason."  hurm...
