Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

off to bed.  Quick - we actually got 4 out of 5 of the team together tonight.  Was nice to have some dry runs and get a handle on things.  Might jibba jabber about it tomorrow.  Anyway, I think we can make a strong team after we get through some fine tuning.  And that tuning is mostly sorting audio at this point.  Looking forward to tomorrow.  Everyone try to be present and READY at 8:15 PM est.  we'll chat for 10-15 minutes about what we are going to do (do we normal, do we ranked immediately, what roles, etc).  Anyway, I want everyone to try to take it seriously out of the gates.  We can certainly play normal games to dick around and have fun, but I want tomorrow to be about trying your best and calling out whatever role you think you'd best fit.  It DOES NOT MATTER if you screw up, play like crap, whatever.  If you think we will be an amazing team immediately, you are silly.  So try to have a tough hide, listen to criticism (obviously myself included (im amazing)), and don't get offended as best you can.  If we play enough, we'll figure out how to work best together and become quite good.

aragorn - i'll try to hop on vent around 7:50 or so.  Hop on lol and vent then and I'll try my best to get you up and running before we play tomorrow.  Would love to be heard and hear you.

Anyway, all teammates remember - 8:15PM EST tomorrow for our 1st team game, etc.  Please do your best to be there and be on time.  If we are going to be successful as a team, its VERY important that all of us get several games under our belt in short order.  It's also SUPER important that everyone shows up and is available at that time.  Remember, if everyone else shows up and you are mia, well.. everyone is just waiting around for you.  Do your best to be considerate of everyone if possible.  Thanks!

Its always possible that I'll be a minute or two late since I'm usually just getting home at 8:15.  I'll be on asap though.

on May 08, 2012

I'll do my best to get the Vent issues sorted out beforehand. I seemed to have a ton of different sound devices active, so I disabled all but the defaults, so I'm hoping that helps. I had a hell of a time getting drivers to get the headset to work in the first place. Windows 7 is NOT bluetooth friendly! Regardless, I will be on at 7:50 to ensure it's good to go.

Excited for our game tonight!

on May 08, 2012

in vent, you can see if things are working by going under setup and then clicking on test. It will then pick up anything you say (if your mic is working) and loop that through your audio playback device (speakers or headset or whatever).  You also need to decide if you want to do push to talk or voice activation.  I use voice act.  You have to change some settings in setup to configure that as well.  Those settings are on the left side of the setup screen.  Last, try dropping your mic sensitivity (also in setup) to some really low number and then testing if you aren't being picked up when you speak.  Then, increase the value so its only picking you up when you want it to.  Hope that helps!

Windows 7 is SUPER bluetooth friendly as long as you have a good bluetooth dongle (mine's from asus and was like $5).  I had one before that one that was utter rot.  On this one, no issues and everything works well.

Also looking forward to tonight.

on May 08, 2012

My dongle is fine, but came with ZERO software...So that was what created problems with me. I think because of that, my other settings got messed up, as I kind of had to piecemeal it all together. I think I just have to get my headset as the default input and output device and I should be good.

on May 08, 2012

Nah - the dongle is "fine" if it works out of the box with windows 7.  That's what I mean.  Some dongles do (the one I have), some don't (the one I had before).  On the one I had before, I had to putz around with various driver packages, etc.  I got it to work, eventually, but it was never a seamless experience (eg turn on the bluetooth and start talking).  You always had to click this or click that, make some small change in vent every time, etc. And all of that was based on the dongle.  Here's the one that I picked up when it was on sale for $5 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320057

It works fine with windows 7 out of the box and also has current, good drivers.  Anyway, reply here if you get your crap working.  Worst case, if we can at least get you hearing us (via your speakers or whatever), then that's something.

on May 08, 2012

I'm off to bed - we did get our first team game night going and will be meeting again on thursday at 8:15 EST.  I believe the plan going forward will be to play on Tuesday and Thursday nights starting then.  We only played normal games, but will start playing ranked on Thursday.  We still have a lot of things to figure out, but I think everyone will have fun and we'll get better and better.  Thanks again to everyone showing up on time.  More blahblah tomorrow.  Cya!

on May 09, 2012

Let's see... so we created our ranked team last night.  I had no idea's for the team name, so I asked the group.  Zen god wins by default because you cannot beat the zen god (unless he's yelling I'll tank the tower!) with his unique team name idea "How We chill" HWC.  I have no idea, but that said, we are team How We chill now.

I'm still not really sure how we will develop in terms of roles, etc, at this point.  For game 1, I put aragorn at mid because for some reason I got it in my head that he said mid was one of his better roles.  Turns out he says that's one of his worst roles... whoops.  Anyway, any thoughts on set roles we should focus on?

Last, in our non full team, troll game (last game of the night for me), we had a pretty critical miscommunication that ended the game.  The decision was to go for baron or push mid and try to get a tower and an inhib.  3 super big miscommunications happened here.  1 - a few of us wanted to go take baron immediately.  Another was telling us to end it (eg do something that was completely impossible based on the number of folks alive, the amount of time required to end it, etc.  3 - zen god telling everyone multiple times "go I will tank the tower."  Now, it appears that when each of us heard zen say this, we kind of assumed he wanted us to kill the tower, so, even though it was a bad idea, we focused the tower (well.. i know i did anyway).  He actually wanted to tank the tower while we focused down the remaining enemy heroes.  As such, we don't get baron, we all pretty much die, and we lose the game.

Anyway, I know the traditional strategy would be to push mid, grab the inhib, then go after baron.  Could we have accomplished those 3 objectives (tower/inhib/baron)?  I don't think so.  We certainly could have taken baron.  We certainly could have taken the tower (by pushing back or killing the enemies).  I don't think we could have taken the inhib based on respawn timers of their team.   In hind sight, I have decided that I was right.  And I am, for 1 reason - if we had gone to baron, zen would not have yelled "go I will tank the tower."  We would not have then focused the tower like suckas.  instead, we would have a bright, shiny baron buff.  Pretty easy to say that baron buff is superior to the whole team dying and accomplishing nothing, right?  That said, yah... we probably should have pushed mid like we did (except not focusing on the tower, eh).

on May 09, 2012

My preferred roles are probably Ranged AD>Support>Jungle>Top>Mid, although I'm not going to pick anything that throws off everyone else. That's why I took mid. I didn't do a great job, but I don't think I was terrible either. I should have been more aggressive early, but I really didn't want to get ganked by Ali, which I did about 3 or 4 times. Plus I was frazzled after my instadeath from the invasion. Then I couldn't really get any ganks, because my lane was pushed too far, while also getting told to push my lane by top. I found that a little frustrating to be honest. I was already down two deaths and struggling to keep up in CS. I was in no position to pressure an already rather tanky Ryze. Not meaning to point any fingers, just explaining myself a bit on that for the benefit of next time. Either way, like I said mid is my weakest role.

I thought our games overall were pretty good for the first go around. Now that I can actually talk that should help (still no clue what happened with the voice activation). Not sure what the best strategy for roles is going forward. I guess further along we should probably have established roles so we can perfect our teamwork.

on May 09, 2012

I don't know how to explain it much better, but inhibitor first is better than baron first.  Just because there was a bad call AND people who didn't second guess it, doesn't mean the idea was not correct.  Wait for minions, push tower, push inhib / possibly get a kill if they decide to defend 3v5.  Go back, shop, and meet them to contest baron (if they're a smart team and know how to counter-baron... which is something barely seen in 1800's).. or we go and do baron after shopping.

Why this was better in that game:  Remember the other time we got baron?  We accomplished nothing.  Instead, we lost baron buff on most people before the timer was even halfway done.  An inhib down would make it easier to accomplish other objectives np.

Why this is better in general:  An inhibitor will allow your team to take most / all of the other objectives freely for a set time, whereas baron can be stolen by something as stupid as a Blitz grab or Janna tornado.  With an inhibitor down, it's easy to fight for baron after healing, because eventually someone is going to have to get the super minions off the nexus turrets, and boom - 5v4 fight in favor of your side ensues.

Baron wasn't a bad call, however.  The only bad idea was to do a risky dive w/ no creeps with no objective gains.  Objectives are greater than kills.

yah.  So we agree - I was right.

j/k - anyway, tower/inhib was a better call.  I trust we won't have a crazy garen jungler in a serious game at any rate... or a pantheon/urgot lane... or a poor peter that's really frustrated because a few of us were mostly goofing off.  ah well.  Shame, though - easy win if we had not gone full retard at the end there.

poor taric...

K - started using a new bit of software that is cool.  The cool part is that it also shows you your "normal" elo and ranking in normal games.  Normal elo is a stat that riot keeps track of, but does not publish.  If you grab the lolmatches client, you can get this data.  Anyway, the client runs while you are playing lol.  You do not need to input any user name or pw.  And it grabs info on everyone in your game.  So, prior to tonight, I didn't have any stats on their site.  After playing a few games tonight, I have stats.  Same goes for anyone that played with me.  Anyway, here's karl's stats.  His info was loaded to the site as a result of playing games with me.  Carbon you should be on here as well now.

http://lolmatches.com/player/na/20122987/Krazikarl

Anyway, normal elo is a fun stat to take a look at anyway.

on May 10, 2012

Lol, my normal ELO was higher over a year ago when you could actually get it easily.  I guess only playing champions you aren't good at in normal takes its toll.

on May 10, 2012

Heh - it's a fun stat anyway.  It does help paint a little more of a picture why some matches are easier with certain folks when you duo queue.  And perhaps helps clarify the match making process a little bit more anyway.  I always assumed that matchmaking in normals was based on wins/losses - didn't even know there was a "normal elo."

Anyway, team game night is tonight at 8:15PM EST.   We'll be playing ranked team games only.  Please be on time in as much as is possible.  Thanks again for everyone being ready to go at 8:15 on Tuesday.  Hoping things go just as smoothly tonight.  I'm also hoping me magically sweep all of our games so we get a nice team ranking out of the gates.

on May 10, 2012

Cool little client! I played a quick game of dominion and found my ELO was just under 1600 for that mode, so that's kinda cool. Have yet to use for SR norms.

Looking forward to our games tonight! I FINALLY figured out all my vent issues for reals this time, so no distractions there for me, unlike when I died in the first two minutes

We need some kind of rallying cry, unless we are too chill for that. har har
