Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I don't want to alarm anyway, but elo buff says that peter just played a ranked game.

Didn't he say that he used to play ranked games?  I thought that he mentioned dropping to like 500 ELO due to trolls.

I have Rebellion.

Picked up the Thunder Bear. Ghost+Charge= super fast bear!!!!!

I suck more than usual but he is fun.

As for skins...Im waiting on the new Xerath skin. Its no legendary skin but...its alot better than his other two...which I bought sadly.

Cool stats Pacov! Is this a sort of donate what you want service? I'm not too familiar with ELObuff. I do like making myself pro by winning custom games

Also, some late thoughts on last game night:

Top is something I will work on and fully admit to not being great at right now. I am more comfortable as a ranged AD bot at the moment, if I'm not supporting. I'm going to focus on Olaf for right now and diversify from there. I find Olaf pretty forgiving and adds a lot of damage to the team comp. My first game top as Olaf was a win, although Darius is a pretty tough opponent. I may have him as my secondary pick unless they nerf him too far. Happy to get any advice on a good top to play. I used to love Renekton, but he is too easily counterpicked imo. Shen is usually banned and as rightly pointed out, doesn't add a lot of damage to the team.

ARAM was a lot of fun! I hadn't played that mode at all previously to that. I'm all for playing more of those, maybe as a warm up for a more serious game, or just to mix things up after some tough games. It will be even better once they release that Proving Grounds map specifically for it.

I have no idea about that one, Karl.  I don't think peter plays ranked games, but maybe you are right.

It's a site that you must subscribe to access the data.  It's $6 a month.  Frankly, in its current iteration, its not worth a $6 recurring fee, but I wanted to check it out.  More than likely I'll dump my sub at the end of the month unless they come up with something super useful.  My fav thing is that they have a dashboard that provides updates on your friends or any players you are "following."  So, if peter plays a ranked game, I get a pop up telling me peter played X game today and won with x items, etc.  I also like it for trend analysis.  For instance, I'm apparently going through a Leona/WW phase and while i might kinda know that, the graphs quickly spell out exactly how good I'm doing for win % along with how many games.  I'm also apparently 100% with AD orianna over 6 games this month... crazy world.

That's good to know - especially re: the more comfortable as a ranged AD part.  I love playing as olaf top, but there some better champs you might want to try for easier sustain.  WW and Darius as my 2 super easy top choices.  Incredibly easy to trade favorably with either of them (though ww beats darius hands down top lane).  You might want to consider running ghost + flash while you are getting better with olaf.  I don't pull that too often now when I go olaf top, but it gives you incredible initiation late game with your ult + keeps you very safe early in case you do something stupid in lane.

I had alot of fun with ARAM as well.

So, we currently have an official roster for the ranked team of 3 people.  I'll do the usual trying to field a ranked team for tonight, but I'm not sure how that will work out.  See you folks at 8:15PM.  We'll just do some pick ups if I can't lock down another 2 for the ranked stuff.

on Jun 14, 2012

Haha love the 100% win rate AD Orianna.

I'll give WW a try as well, assuming he isn't banned or picked as a jungler. I find it a little hard to find the time to properly practice with lots of champs. My main goal is to play a few different champs that perform well, despite efforts to counterpick.

I have to say, pretty impressed by this!

on Jun 14, 2012

Well - ww is just a really easy character to play imo that can trade really well with any melee.  If you end up against a ranged player, well that's where you actually need to know a bit of what you are doing.  He does get banned a ton (which is why I fall back to darius because of his crazy early level damage output.  Anytime playing top I really focus on trading and doing enough damage that the enemy can't last hit for shite.  That's incredibly easy with both of those characters imo.  Olaf has some nice sustain, but requires more skill imo because of his e.  It's one of the best damage dealers in the game, but ofc, every time you use it, you lose health as well... which makes you more vulnerable to ganks.  Olaf is great if you have a jungler on your side that will venture top a bit to secure kills, but if its the other way around, you'll likely end up with poor sustain against many champions as both your slow and your sustain skill cost mana.  Ah - but if things go well early, SO MUCH FUN.  It is a requirement to own the brolaf skin to play olaf though - just so you know.  Nothing better than casting your e and hearing  "BOOOOMMM!!!"

re: pulse fire ez - I love the level of detail and effort they put into this skin and hope other characters get a similar treatment.  Wish it was a character I enjoying playing more.  I'll probably just check it out on the PBE and leave it at that.  It's be cool to see this in game though... perhaps less cool for all the god awful ez's we'll see in the near future, though.

It will be worth it to hear peter go on and on about all the Ezreals lmao.

Good point.    I also sense the following comment from Peter:  "Man - I shouldn't play Ezreal.  I'm just going to go back to using Malz"

on Jun 15, 2012

Ok - so recap on yesterday.  I'll cover the fun stuff first, anyway.  We had about 8 of us at one point and played some fun ARAM games.  I, master of rehosting and the lobby, only needed to host our 1st ARAM game about 8 times (no exaggeration).  There was a magic trick that apparently involved me either forgetting to select all random or someone becoming available to play the second I kick the game off to the character select screen.  Anyway, we had fun. Karl played a super annoying shen that managed to stay at like 12% hp for around 10 minutes and would never die.  I super like randoming mundo in ARAM though.  Holy crap is that fun.  For those of you that haven't played the new ARAM map, fyi - it has shrub coverage to hide in a few spots, so that should be a cool change from what we've been doing.  AFAIK, that map will be out this coming Tuesday and the map automatically enforces the ARAM rules (eg no snowball items, etc).

OK - re our ranked team game:  glad we were able to get 5 folks.  We lost for a few clear reasons.  Incredibly poor group team fights, folks out of position and not there for team fights, no dragon control, a mid that went afk for > 5 minutes, only 1 lane was successful during the laning phase.

Our bot lane worked great and we were able to dominate it after a little bit.  I personally think I could have performed a little better, but maintained control for the most part.

Top lane, while I don't think the dude died alot (I could be wrong re: the laning phase), he was crushed on CS.  Irelia vs olaf can be a bit of an annoying matchup - especially if you've never played it before.  But - we knew that he'd be transitioning to top, so we kind of needed to carry him to the late game (either by successful jungle ganks or by winning both mid and bot). There's probably more than a few things that need to be worked on, but as a team we should call out in case he stays top too long to get him to join us for a team fight.  Their irelia ended the game with 13.6k gold and 253 minion kills. Olaf ended the game with 8.9k gold and 176 cs.

The afk mid bit meant our mid would have less gold for items and resulted in the loss of at least 1 dragon and likely some missed kill ops putting us further behind. Karma had 12.4k gold + 240 CS.  Ahri had 8.7k gold +175 CS.

on Jun 15, 2012

I really sucked top, so I apologize for that. Don't see a lot of Irelia top anymore, so I was unprepared. I will be working hard on improving, particularly on safely farming, while also not pushing too much. When it comes down to it, they obviously had far more experience with Irelia, than I did with Olaf. I would have gone Renekton if I had last pick. Ah well, I will learn from this. It might be more beneficial to just improve as a team without playing ranked for a bit. I don't think I'm good enough to pull my own weight top yet.

ARAM was fun again. The last game was pretty funny since all of us just built tanky and zero dmg. Three melee is rough, especially against a mage. Amumu was fun though. He's actually one of my faves. Too bad he kind of sucks in the current meta, unless you don't get counter jungled ever.

on Jun 15, 2012

AragornV
Too bad he kind of sucks in the current meta, unless you don't get counter jungled ever.

actually, oddly enough, your probability of winning a game that you use amumu in is like 56% per elo buff - its actually one of the higher values per individual character.  On just raw stats and just this month alone, amumu is actually the number 1 jungler based on win rate.  Kind of unexpected, but those are the stats.

re: top - I think its just figuring out what your trying to do and determining if you can trade successfully.  I find that heavy sustain or heavy damage champs are my fav.  I've unless found quite a bit of success with more unorthdox picks like urgot top.  He's a bit of a nightmare for any melee top and you can build him a little tanky and still have huge dmg output.  Olaf's super fun to play, but he's a character that is pretty easily countered, so you really need an early gank (especially based on the side of the map we were on).  Once those wards start getting dropped, karl's going to rarely have an opportunity to gank an irelia.  Anyway, if you can't trade successfully, its usually pretty easy to freeze a lane near your tower so you can cs more safely.  Your call though - keep working olaf or give someone else a go.   Fire up those normal games and call top.  That's how i got at least half way decent with olaf.  Still love ww top best though - you simply can't outtrade the guy if you know what you are doing.

Other solo top ideas - this one is a little bit of a troll move, but gives you a pretty big leg up if you don't think you'll be able to kill whoever you are laned against and generally freaks your opponent out. A caveat - I always poke a little when someone is trying to last hit a creep.  You need to pay very close attention to how they react and adjust accordingly.  If they take the cs, punish them with a poke.  If they switch to you and miss the cs, then consider faking like you are going to hit them, etc.  Ok, here's the goofy strategy that I

Cast ignite at what seems like a semi dumb time. This immediately makes them think either 1 - this guys an idiot or 2 - I don't have a ward down yet , I'm about to get ganked hard (obviously, for number 2, you need to know if your jungler has been seen recently, etc).  The trick is actually to do it when they are close to full hp (and you are too) between level 1-3 and are looking to trade with you.  Then, act like you are full on committing to the fight and pay attention to what they do.  Their either quickly run in terror after an aa or 2, cast their own ignite on you like 2-3 seconds later (eg after they've been damaged quite a bit - eg you are currently winning the trade and they are getting increasingly nervous and you should have more hp than them (cast a health pot if you can before you start this move).  Anyway, more often than not this silly move will get them to burn a flash (for fear of the gank or them dying as you aren't backing down)and, at least in my experience, almost always results in some lane dominance for at least a minute or 2.  This is because you will have more hp than them and can control the lane.  Obviously, you don't want to do this rot when the creeps are pushed.  But, keep in mind that on olaf, this is actually super easy to do as long as you are around level 3 and still have pretty high hp.  You can almost for certain get them to burn their flash as olaf because of your slows.  So, you basically run at them to start the exchange (eg see if they will trade 1 for 1 with you), then hit ignite immediately, slow them with your q, pound them with your e, pick up you axe and q them again.  At this point, if you are both level 3, if they haven't hit you with ignite back, they are running like hell and will have to flash if you keep your slow on them.  Anyway, food for thought.  The main reason I do crap like this is to keep the enemy from getting cs and allowing me to manipulate the creep wave more favorably.  Oh and last, you really need to have a good idea of where the enemy jungler started before you pull any of this crap.  If you start this up and he's moving to gank, you'll have to burn your flash...

on Jun 15, 2012

Amumu is just as good as any of our lee sins, mundos, ww, trundle, and nocturnes... he is a tad slower, but that's why he's more overlooked.  creep speed cleaning isn't the name of the game.  How many times have you jungled or have a jungler just go b 'cause he just cleared wolves and would have to go to golems to do anything 'cause he's pre-6 or his ulti is on cooldown and the lanes are too pushed?   Besides shyvanna or mundo, amumu is one of the few junglers who will turret dive or gank under turret (even earlier levels) and receive 3-5 turret hits before retreating... the difference with amumu is he has better cc than either of them...

plus his ult late game is probably the best difference maker in terms of late game junglers.

just my 2 cents

food for thought

on Jun 15, 2012

Hmm, I didn't mean to imply Amumu was bad by any means, he is just vulnerable in his own jungle, especially against someone like a Lee Sin. His pre-6 ganks aren't especially powerful either if you miss your bandage toss. He lacks any movement speed buff, but compensates with tankyness. Stonewall actually ranks him above Warwick and in the latter part of the Tier 1 group. His ult is fantastic, especially with the recent CD buff and really deadly in an AOE comp.

Karma was able to clear the entire wave in two shots from level 3...

I was only able to do that by level 9...

she made me feel like I was playing against a Mordekaiser...

on top of the ridiculous 'crisis' that occurred while I was playing...

I agree

it was my fault we lost that...

I missed most of my charms (except that one with Vayne)

I went AFK

I got scared because Irelia started walking towards me in that team fight so I ran and got waaaaay out of position...

and then I really couldn't do anything throughout the game because Karma pushed her lane so hard and Nautilus decided to do a host of stupid ganks (wherein I didn't die, but I was unable to keep minion farm tempo)

I can blame my charm misses on the earsplitting headache I had though...

it was very painful...

not so sure about everything else...

probably my experience in solo queue with it being "every man for himself" and coordinated teamfights are a figment of each player's imagination

I really do need to get better at teamfighting.

my humblest apologies on this matter...
