Pacov's place to enjoy the show.

Update 5/25/2017

  • This thread is all done.  I've lost interest in jibba jibbing here, but its been fun.  Thanks for all the memories.
  • I am streaming from time to time on twitch - generally just when I'm trying hard in ranked though.  If interested, you can check that out here:  https://www.twitch.tv/pacovdumptruck

Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...).  That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike.  You can find the previous thread (now archived) here:  https://forums.joeuser.com/413863.  I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.

What’s this thread all about?
For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to.  Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like.  I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL.  Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.

Quick background on me
I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out.  I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

The grind for the new icon seems pretty steep..... Anyway I have been playing a lot of Rogue Legacy the last few days. It is a great game and I will be easily dumping 20+ hours into it to beat it. Also had a Mario Party night with some friends and I managed to win despite a few stars getting stolen by Boo haha. Got to level 3 in the original contra playing legitimate co-op with a friend of mine. Would be epic to beat it some day.

Yeah - I'm not grinding out the icon.  Nice we all get a skin at any rate though.

GOT IT!

Wow - so fiora is pretty damn close to a true rework imo.  Slightly familiar, but oh so very different.  Her q is no longer a double targeted dash that requires a minion or person to click on.  Now its literally a dash that procs damage if its close enough.  Her passive is more or less a silly quinn mechanic.  Really cool when it works, but not super reliable.  That passive does give you a little flexibility in playing tanky.

Her w is also very interesting and new.  The old one was absolute trash.  Now, its... very interesting... and requires some testing.  Its a line shot ability with decent range. You press w, it winds up and then casts.  You get a nice slow or a stun if the attach would have been a disable.  That's not even remotely interesting though.  What is, however - it seems to block all damage during that wind up period.  And block as in it can't suddenly proc you again.  Wukong ult, for example.  If you wind this up (pretty easy to just press w, eh), the moment you press W, dmg negation begins.  In this instance, I started wind up early, a wu kong ulted while I was still winding up, I don't get knocked up or take damage.  When my w ended, he was still spinning on top of me.  No knock up - ALSO no damage.  Depending on how crazy this is, I'm guessing it blocks alot of attacks.  during that window.  The various interaction should be fun to figure out.

Her e only procs for 2 hits.  The 1st slows but can't crit.  The 2nd is a guaranteed crit.

Anyway, her passive interactoin is a little weird and a weakness.  The q change enables her to dash away if needed.

Riot is actually putting out news about their server move to Chicago.  I'm pinging like 20ms to there.  So thats nice.  Screw you Thunder!

on Aug 07, 2015

Finally you will be able to easily last hit in the jungle karl.

Yeah - I was happy and sad.  Obv nice for most of us, but could be like crushing for thunder's connection.  I'm pinging out at 30ms.

Thunder is gonna get /destroyed/

i disagree with the evaluation of their "central west coast" getting sub-80 ping... i'm currently getting a stable 80 ping which is perfectly playable, but it's suppose to increase by another 20-30 ms, and 100ms is where i know it becomes harder to "do" certain things. Frustrating.

That said, pinging a random Chicago servers gives me a roughly 67ms ping for some and 77ms ping for others. So /maybe/ it'll get better, or stay the same, which is both perfectly fine... The thing i'm mostly curious about is what pros will do. i predict that LCS will stay in Los Angeles and pros will just deal with ~65ms pings, but we'll see.

Pinging Portland, gives me 95 ping which is what I play at most of the time.  I'm testing random Chicago servers at 122 ping which is what I play at currently about 10% of the time.  Playing with the extra latency doesn't feel great, but hopefully that's mostly because it throws off my timing.  Might be able to adapt pretty well if 122 becomes the usual.

I'm not worried.  I think since I'm already at that "things you can't do" latency threshold, I'll be okay.  We'll see though.

Edit: I am looking forward to seeing how much farther up the ladder all my pals who live close to Chicago can get though!  I'll never have low enough ping to Insec kick Bruisers at Pacov when he's low on health, but maybe other people's dreams can come true now.

on Aug 07, 2015

Well, I am real close to Chicago and I get 65-70 ping currently, so I would expect west coast pings after the move to be ~70.  I'd be surprised if it was over 80 since I never had ping that high.

It will be interesting to see what happens with LCS.  Pros won't practice at that ping.  But are they going to move LCS studios to Chicago?  They could be really hurting the NALCS even more since those kind of pings actually do matter for pros (I dont think 70 ping really means much to players at our level).

Thundercles

'm testing random Chicago servers at 122 ping which is what I play at currently about 10% of the time.

Side note - from what I've observed, rito has something in effect that adds another 10 ping or so once you hit their live servers.  For instance, in PBE, I can get 70 ping. On live, 80.  Probably is just 2 diff locations of the servers, but I don't know for sure.

As far as ping goes, I play regularly in the 80-130 range on 2 diff isps.  My real problem is that the ping varies most games (not up and down in a game, but 1 game is 80 ping, game 2 is 100 ping, and so on).  If you are having to adc, bouncing back and forth is kind of rough in my experience as it impacts my reaction time.  Anyway, I hope you land in no higher than 150 and its stable.  Bannick, for instance, plays at like 250 ping but only plays support, etc.   Hoping it doesn't come to that, but I definitely find ping variance at the very least a hindrance to adc.  Obv, the lower the ping, the better, but if its stable and 150 - good.

Fun games last night - 3 wins for our ranked team which put me into the 2nd tier for team rewards anyway.  Hopefully we can knock out some more.

So GP just got locked in by dignitas in the playoffs! WOOOO

on Aug 10, 2015

um... so rito is going to do some live traffic testing on the chicago servers tomorrow...

tis a bit further along than I thought.

On August 11, we are testing the NA game servers from approximately 6:00am to 12:00pm (noon) PDT. During this time, ranked will be temporarily disabled for approximately 3 to 6 hours.

They aren't moving the PBE servers this time, which means they probably never made the move up to Portland either.  You probably just have a better path to Santa Monica.

Obv, the lower the ping, the better, but if its stable and 150 - good.

Think I connected to the new servers in a couple custom games this morning and was at a little above 110.  Tried pinging the IP Address on the Reddit thread you linked and got the same number.  Looks like not much changes for me.  My guess is that whatever new infrastructure Riot put in place with its Roadmap or whatever made it a priority to get from Chicago to wherever the oceanic cables from Hawaii end up in the mainland.

San Luis Obispo!

Or did you forget intentionally so that i get to ramble about my favourite building again
