Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...).  That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike.  You can find the previous thread (now archived) here:  https://forums.joeuser.com/413863.  I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.

What’s this thread all about?
For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to.  Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like.  I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL.  Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.

Quick background on me
I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out.  I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Hotfix is live.

-Graves movespeed down, Q damage down, Q mana cost up.

-Kog'Maw base AD and attack speed up

-Warlord's Bloodlust - only works on Crits against champions

-Thunderlord's Decree - now works correctly when multiple champs on same team have mastery. (not documented on KR notes but CD down to 20 from 30 as we've seen on PBE)

Tooltips likely won't be updated until 5.23

Glad to hear it and thx for the details.  So this should tone down trynd/yas, but not necessarily pull them off the banned wagon (hue).  Thunder lords not being a colossal waste now should be maybe a bit more interesting.. that only 1 person can use it bit was not so good.  Be worth trying out kog again or keeping an eye on him.

I'm thinking about putting in some reps on irelia for a bit.  I'm liking my rune/mastery setups for her (mirrored irelia carries u pages for masteries/runes - so far I've watched a few vids of how he runs a lane with her and a few coaching vids from last shadow).  I really need to figure out how to properly leave top, though.  There's a pretty gigantic missing piece related to when I should bugger off top and I'm not making all the right connections.  

Take for instance my game vs vlad yesterday.  I went through wave after wave with him.  Always someone showing up to cover or hold his lane if he was forced off, or their whole team popping up there.  Kept me from killing the turret.  And I think I'm WAY too protective of my turrets - so much so that I hesitate to group.  The only type of kill TP op I semi consistently hit is when there is a ward behind the enemy team and I feel like I have pretty good odds of at least getting in there.  If we don't have that, though, then at best I can TP to one of our creeps if we have one.  I'm not really trying to sound like I'm complaining if its coming off that way, but moreso I just don't get the best way to use TP in many situations I find myself in.  

Guess I struggle with proper decision making on that out of top lane.

Trying to learn and practice the finer points of wave manipulation in top lane. I've got general ideas of how to manipulate it, but that changes a bit with a melee.  Interestingly enough, I learned quite a bit about wave control thanks to donger.  With him, you often intentionally try to get creep aggro by attacking the enemy champ.  This pulls the wave towards you and into turrets and when properly managed, means you can safely hold the wave wherever you want.  

With top lane as a melee, I'm finding that a bit more tricky and I'm not quite as sure when I should be trading.  I'm paying a lot more attention to the wave and how much damage I'll take if I attack the enemy and also factor that into my trades if I have a creep adv and the enemy attacks me.  

A bunch of this is pretty basic stuff that I just don't know how do to properly.

Along those lines, I learned how to do irelia's super gap closer combo (which is likely just common sense to more experienced folks). What you do is use your ult to damage the ranged creeps behind the wave.  Using that and with proper timing, you increase your effective range to somewhat crazy levels (but requiring more precision than a yasuo dash as if you don't execute a creep when you dash, your q goes on CD).  Had no idea about that tool in irelia's kit until I watched a coaching video and that was brought up by the coach.  

Also, omg please make the rageblades stop.  Once game last night was a master yi and a udyr both with rageblade (udyr went phoneix with rb and it was trash, yi it was more serviceable, but silly); however, we ended up letting those 2 shites just afk splitpush and I could only pick up one as irelia.  rage build is useful enough for split pushing, but sub par on those champs.  Currently, I'm liking rageblade on Xin, Ire, jax fairly exclusively.  

Awful kayles are abounding running rage build in lane as well.  Had one of those last night that manage to get picked twice, which started late game team fights and fail to ult.  FOTM is fine, but god... people with no skill with a champ just having a go, not even getting the ult mechanic or how games function... bleh.

Had some fun playing irelia and learning more matchups.  I might stick w/ her a bit.  I feel like there's a pretty good amount of depth with her and a bunch to learn.

Also, holy crap did I tilt last night. It took exactly 3 things to make happen.  1 - finding out I have guests including a 1 year old all weekend 2 - making a completely awful play under my turret 3 - karl helping by last hitting.  Completely lost my shite.  Real bummer as I think thunders gal pal could have carried if I had not lost my mind.  >< All my bad though for getting all smeh.  Sorry fellas.

re: #2 - klajskasjdl - so, the jax I was fighting completely blew the lane and set me up for a pretty decent freeze, which I was able to hold for like 2 minutes near my turret.  minion control was a pretty big focus for me today and I spent quite a bit of time looking into exactly how to setup freezes during combat, etc.  Anyway, that pays off for the most part, but I end up soaking more damage than I should to hold the last wave.  This results in a lower hp jax diving me under my turret.  If I land my e, he's dead and the lane is 100% mine.  Instead, the jax is able to proc his stun before i can e and I take enough dmg to get wiped.  

#3 - then I completely lose my shite, and its kind of out of line.  karl comes up after I'm dead to soak some xp/farm. Which is cool and pretty common/smart of junglers to take some gold/xp from lanes if you know, your guy in lane is dead.  What makes me lose my mind is there's a pretty big wave set up that would be so perfect for a freeze and get me right back into it after my bad play.  Instead of setting up a freeze, he lets the wave push to my turret and then last hits as best he can with spells/aas.   BUT - I'm so hyper focused in my own world about wave control, so I see what would have been a great opportunity for me to get right back in it wasted.  Incidentally, the super helpful, god tier omg what a nice fella play would have been to tank the wave for a couple seconds, pull it to the side but out of tower range, and last hit with just autos.  He'd miss out on xp and gold though, but position me super well.  Anyway, I'm gone to tilt town where awful pacov lives.

Worth noting I'm just saying how I perceived things at the time and I don't really think mr coral did anything wrong all said and done.  Kind of bummed with myself for going all tilt lord though as I cost you folks the game (front line raka didn't help either, but really, it was on me).  Sorry folks!

There were 4 caster minions and I just last hit them under tower - I didn't even push them.  The next wave was coming in (I had to run around it to bandage toss when you came back), so you would have still been set up very deep in the lane.

Right, so there were a few minions and I went out a little bit to partially freeze it.  Notice that I took creep aggro to prevent them all from crashing into the tower.  You seem to expect me to run all the way into the lane away from tower while under creep aggro while a Jax is standing right there.  That's fun, but then Jax gets to wail on me while I have creep aggro, which gets me yelled at for feeding the Jax.  I'm doing the most I can on a non dueling jungler.

So I prevent some of the wave from hitting the tower and last hit.  Notice how the next wave was right there at the end of the video, so you still had a freeze right at your tower if you wanted it (which you didnt since you called for an aggressive play on Jax).

During the game I didn't see what happened but assumed you wanted Karl to freeze a lane for you and instead he last hit under the tower.  This I could understand you being frustrated with, though I think from a neutral perspective it would have been the right call.

Then you post a video of Karl perfectly setting up the lane for you in super good position while still getting some gold and staying healthy enough to gank for you.  From what I saw from the clip, it was the best play.  If he had done what you wanted him to, he would have:

- Possibly gotten chunked by Jax and been unable to gank for you after.

- Not set up a good freeze for you.

After laning with you many times, I've noticed we have different opinions on how to set up a freeze.  Often times I try and thin the wave out down to 3 minions which tend to last long enough against my wave for the enemy wave to arrive right outside the range of my tower.  You get riled up while I'm doing the thinning which confuses me.

You just posted a video of Karl setting up the wave just like the high elo players I watched videos of and found fault in it.  If he had tanked the minions and Jax, it wouldn't have been a freeze, it would have been a slow push cause of the extra melee and siege minion in the wave.  Jax probably coulda sent it right into your tower cause Karl would have gotten beat up performing Pacov's Magical Fantasy World Lane Freeze.  The lane would have reset in Jax's favor eventually and minions might have been lost to tower shots instead of going to you or Karl.

So that's my opinion on the matter.  If it makes you mad enough to want to insult my mother, try and gather the courage to actually do it.  Don't just passive aggressively call her a 'handsome woman' to show me that you really want to say something else but aren't going to.

There was a bit of hub bub about support items in reddit land (where everyone's mothers are equally handsome).  Focus was on the new upgraded items for support (eg you can combine sightstone with X to get X.  

The general theme was 1 - those upgraded items are crap.  You actually don't get slot efficiency because the upgrades are awful.  For instance, if its insanely late game, I'd like to actually SELL my sight stone for anything else that gave my team an advantage (I cant, mind you, but if I have 6k gold, I'd rather have something a bit more powerful than an upgraded SS).  Instead, you can upgrade the sightstone into some trash item (compared to what you'd actually buy if you had a free spot).  2 - EVERYTHING else in the game is about ending the game early (lower tower effective hp, new pre 20 min bar, etc).  So, creating a set of items designed to give a power spike late game is dumb from the outset.  

 

Ideally, what they should shoot for is 1 - create an item that is good, but does not entice other roles to take.  2 - create an item that is in the price range of supports (not doing insane "your mother is handsome" pacov GDM builds).  3- create an item that supports might actually consider rushing.  4 - DO NOT make supports sacrifice existing activates for so so smeh trade offs.  Keep those activates AND provide something else.  

3- is stated directly due to Rito's clear goal of faster games.  As a support, I actually should be like screw slot efficiency.  Seriously, I shouldn't ever get to a full build with new changes.  So, if you want to make supports more interesting, let me rush the existing support items with their activatables... THEN give them a powerful component to make an additional tier awesome. Slot efficiency on supports is IDIOTIC if games are rushed and the only income really comes from passives/items AND the game is shorter.  

 

Anyway, that's my take.  Provide exactly what you get from the original items.  Include a sightstone.  Add a premium cost AND then give a VERY STRONG final tier upgrade.  The focus being, again, that you don't want other roles to take this.  The existing support items already make you not want them on non supports.  Toss in a generally support only sightstone and a bunch of dough - win. As long as its incredibly unappealing for other roles, you could make that final tier something really cool (while completely ignoring slot efficiency on supports (a mechanic that is good if long games).

These changes are about ensuring that successful actions promote further aggression to maintain and increase leads. These changes do appear to be shortening game times, but I do want to be clear that this was an acceptable (and possibly beneficial) side effect, rather than the goal."

Meddler: "Our goal with preseason was to keep games around the same average length as they currently were (around 33 minutes on average)."  

"Yes, we've seen a noticeable increase in surrendering around the 20 minute mark post 5.22. That's pretty standard after a major patch like this, given some champions tend to be out of line and people are experimenting with new stuff"

"We're currently seeing turrets die too easily. Some of that's assumedly due to the reduction in effective health tower health in 5.22, some of it's also going to be due to a bug that's removing their intended growth in Armor/MR over time. We'll be fixing that bug in 5.23, and increasing outer tower health a bit, then looking at whether towers are still falling too fast or not."

 

tl;dr Some games are ending pretty quick now but that won't last forever.  There will be more games when the Sightstone upgrade will come in handy in the future... especially for rich Support players that love to split push and go GP/10 Runes!

Ah - thx!  Had not read up on that.  Still hoping we see some changes to the support items all the same.  I really like the idea of getting something kind of good from an upgrade, you know.
