Pacov's place to enjoy the show.

Update 5/25/2017

  • This thread is all done.  I've lost interest in jibba jibbing here, but its been fun.  Thanks for all the memories.
  • I am streaming from time to time on twitch - generally just when I'm trying hard in ranked though.  If interested, you can check that out here:  https://www.twitch.tv/pacovdumptruck

Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...).  That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike.  You can find the previous thread (now archived) here:  https://forums.joeuser.com/413863.  I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.

What’s this thread all about?
For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to.  Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like.  I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL.  Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.

Quick background on me
I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out.  I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Don't forget to play the occasional ranked game to prevent the demotion!

yeah seriously - karl went through enough pain just to get back to plat (though he said the prob was caused by riot demoting him at like 20 days).  Def worth getting a game in.  Not a bad idea to check when your last game was and figure out when you need to play again.  I'm currently just sticking with a game every 20 days unless I get inspired to play.

Gotta say.. work has been kicking my arse lately.  I'm completely wiped out from on call - literally getting paged out every day this week for something, had an install at 4:30AM yesterday, paged out that night at 2AM for more work, etc, etc.  I'm noticing a hit in my reaction time to things in League.  Played a few games are gnar in top.  I like him now, especially against ryze.

looks like the ash exploit has been fixed:  http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/bug-report/PXtpNR29-gameplay-gamebreaking-ashe-bug?comment=002d

which is good... currently she has 3rd highest win rate in plat/gold.

K - so I decided to try out vpn tunneling to improve my ping and see if that works.  wtfast is a free trial vpn service.  http://www.wtfast.com/

Anyway, open up lol and start a custom game to get a baseline for ping.  Mine was 95 which is really low for me (usually 102-122 or so).  Anyway, I install the program, choose the free trial, and fire it up after following instructions. Entire process to test and setup was about 5 min (eg check it out imo).

Anyway, with the proggy running, I fire up another custom in lol.  Immediately at the load screen I hit 130 ping.  But that drops to 80-81 after a couple of seconds.  Anyway, it stays consistent there.  A ping diff of 15 isn't that gigantic imo, but I'm going to run with this setup and see what i see.  Here's the stats it put out.

hmnm... tried another 1 of their servers and now I'm hitting 71 ping.

Peter is gold V and close to gold 4 no one has an excuse to get gold anymore. I think peter went from bronze 1 to gold V in 2 weeks?

Narfeese?  Looks like its him as well - almost all malz games.  My buddy that plays only sej hit gold V as well.  God.. I'm really going to have to work and hit diamond now.

Off to bed (waiting to be paged by work again.. sigh).  Anyway, played a full game with WTFast - steady 70 ping for me.  Not a super big diff.  Really looking forward to see how it does on nights when I'm at 120 ping.  Going from 70 to 120 ping is a big enough diff to notice. Was smooth all game though?

So the Harrowing started. It is usually my favorite Riot event all year but this year again its only 2 skins and both of them are on champions I dislike. Bummer....

Thanks for turning me onto that whole concept of having a more stable connection Pacov!

The ping improvement programs for gaming don't help me, they in fact crash LoL if I try and hook up to a server that's not in Hawaii.  When I was researching more, I heard about other people in my situation using VPNs so I gave that a shot and installed Cyberghost.

No more "jitters" is the only way I know how to describe it.  Maybe it's just wishful thinking and I'm getting this placebo effect but it really seems like a significant change even if it hasn't lowered my ping at all.

Click 5 times on a health pot in the shop, buy 5 health pots not 4.  Activate Tiamat immediately after Rene's W and it still goes off and cancels the animation.  I played last night on the crappiest connection I have and it still lagged on and off, but when it wasn't lagging I was pulling shit off that I normally wouldn't have been able to.  At least I think.  Gonna try again right now and see if it was just my imagination.

How's WTFast going for you?

And where are you on The Walking Dead?  My GF and I just finished Season 4 and holy shit...

on Oct 25, 2014

wtfast seems to work decently for me, but i had to try multiple servers until I found one that bought the ping down (chicago IL4 is like 100 ping for me, chicago IL1 is 70 ping).  Wtfast is a VPN program AFAIK.

The main thing i noticed I'm getting out of wtfast is something similar to you - not so much the ping reduction but a reduction in minor spiking.  Fluctuations like I was having make the difference between getting cs and not - much like your clicking situation.   Anyway, that's helped a bunch.  Still can't honestly say that I feel like the ping diff between 70 and 100 feels like much, but I def notice the diff in spiking.

re: walking dead, just watched all episodes so far from this season this morning.  Much much gore this time around.  So far, so good though.

been alt acct slumming lately and working some off hours due to on call.  Be back around soonish.  karl's thinking about gifting me a mystery skin also.

also.. someone explain rumble ult to me in this context.

I'm facing north, I press and hold r 2 steps BEHIND ME (south).  I drag up and release R.  Does the ult start where I started (2 steps behind me withe me facing north?  Thanks!

Also, I'm working on champs I suck with on this acct to get experience in lower level games with trash runes.  Let me know if any of you want to join in and have an alt.

on Oct 27, 2014

yeah. If you want to practice, Viktor's E is the exact same way and has a much shorter cooldown, so you can do that in a bot game.

on Oct 27, 2014

Not sure playing Rumble on a sub 30 account is a good idea.  You kinda need some heavy offensive runes and masteries to CS decently with him and if you don't have them I'd think you'd be getting some negative feedback.

For example, say you're pushed to tower and there's a damaged melee minion that you want to kill after it takes one tower hit.  You use the perfect combo of your abilities and an auto attack to kill him.  But you don't kill him in time because you don't do the damage you should be able to do.

Later you turn on your enhanced flame thrower to kill an almost dead minion.  You normally would get the last hit but a friendly minion does instead cause you don't do enough damage.

So on and so on.  I guess you could go with the "If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball" theory, meaning that if you can CS with bad runes and masteries you'll be able to do it easier with proper ones.  I personally think you're just going to learn that Rumble can't last hit with his E or Q very well (which ain't true) and rely too much on autos and ults.

I'd just play on Team Builder on your normal account if I were you.

Thundercles

I'd just play on Team Builder on your normal account if I were you.

Actually, competition has been mostly soft, so its a decent place for me to work on things.  Alt accounts have been useful for me - particularly on champs I really, really suck at and would get stomped at on my main.  I prefer to do the boot camp thing and then pop back to my main.
