Pacov's place to enjoy the show.

This thread has been closed by pacov - a new thread has been created here:  http://forums.demigodthegame.com/383615

Why create this thread?

Simply stated, the ladder is generally not the best depiction of skill, imho.  It GENERALLY tracks who plays the game the most and/or who acts like a jerk by cheating instead of who the most talented players are.  That's not to say that everyone high up in the ladder falls into this category.  So, if I were to put together my own ladder that indicated skill, I wonder how things would shake out.  Obvious hurdles being that many highly skilled individuals don't play each other.  So, this requires either the people that don't play together to play more together (my personal choice) or I have to rely from feedback from other players.

Your part if you want to participate

Who do you guys think are the best players in demigod today?  I understand that its a team game, but individual players do tend to stand out (and I also know that one great player can't guarantee a win if he has weak teammates, etc).  I'm happy to have everyone's feedback.  I'm not looking for people to jump in and flame. Just call out who you think is great or who you'd like to see fight.  Perhaps we'll get games going.  You want to flame and talk crap, your post will probably end up deleted.

You can nominate anyone you want.  To keep this from being a list of who likes who, several individuals that are generally considered excellent at the game will moderate the list.  If those individuals generally agree, a player can be removed or promoted in the list.

I've decided on 4 categories of players and have provided descriptions of each.  Please recommend players along with the category you feel they fit in.

Tier 1 Demigod Players:

Realistically, its my belief that there are 10-30 players in this game that are tier 1 DG players (the best). Those players shine as individuals, generally with a wide variety of characters and do not depend on a specific team or teammate to do well.  They can play exceptionally in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5.  These are players that do not cheat or desync games.  These are the people that you want on your team or you want to play against because you know you will get a good game.  Any player in this list or any other should currently be an active player.

Tier 2 Demigod Players:

These are players that don't quite currently fit into highest level of players, but are good players all the same.  Perhaps they require a specific team or can only do well in specific types of games (1v1, 2v2).  The bottom line is that they aren't quite as polished or versatile as the highest level players.

Tier 3 Demigod Players:

A third group (or list) would be everyone else. No need to list individuals...

Demigod Players that Should Be Avoided:

These would be specific individuals that clearly (and I mean clearly) cheat.  You don't get on this list unless I (pacov) am VERY convinced that you belong here.

  • AlienWarrior - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter confirmed by pacov.  As of 1/5/2010, this player has 34 wins and 0 losses and is ladder ranked 34.  I played a game with him in a 1v1 with him as the host.  After confirming that the player spoke English, I asked him if he would let the stats count if I beat him (there is currently a simple exploit that enables any host in a 1v1 game to make the game disappear if they don't want the stats to be kept - Also note that this player plays almost exclusively 1v1 games).  The player did not respond to my question.  As I began to tear down both sides of the player's base, he used the stat exploit and the game vanished as a result.  The player used this exploit with about 10 minutes left in the game.  Based on his stats and skill level (read: not highly skilled), this player is clearly exploiting the stat system.
  • PrizmSmurf - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter and poor sport confirmed by pacov on 4/1/2010.  After losing in a 2v2 matchup, PrizmSmurf said "I hope you die a long slow death of cancer.  I mean it."  Then said, "Bet you are going to enjoy watching me desync."  Then, just before the citadel went down, desynced the game. Based on his stats, he clearly does not desync games on a regular basis, but wishing cancer on someone because they beat you in a game and then committing the one offense in demigod that can get you banned (saying you are desycning then desyncing) is a bit over the top.  I suggest you avoid him.

Karebears
If you guys can find so much drama in a RTS game like Demigod, I don't ever want to play with you guys in a MMO.

I cause half of them. Why? Because games are boring.

I nominate myself, for 1 of the 3 tiers. LoL.

don't worry, i'll stay away from your games from now on. I don't like my gold and inventory being babysat by a bunch of control freaks anyways.

was a few cool peeps, but i am out of the pacov and GM circle. and couldn't care less.

welcome back.    I'll get ya back on there.  I only remove folks that go on hiatus for > 30 days.  Adding you back to the list.  Adding _Jona to tier 2.

There is a reason its called babysitting.  Some people need it.  I love me a good sheild bot and giants bank when im playing rook.

Also from that game, Dundoon - I haven't played with this guy enough to judge, but I was impressed by his UB play. His team lost, but in a game where everyone else had 15-25 flag caps he had *40.* That's not something I see often.

Dundoon is good.

Hmm... I don't remember being all that impressed with him, but Ke5trel probably makes a good point re: flag caps.  I'd like to a see a replay if anyone remembers to grab one.  My memory of him was that he wasn't that great, but its probably been awhile since I bumped into him.  So, replay or if any more of the tier 1's recommend him and I'll bump him to tier 2.

To rehash Xynth's status as tier 2:

McShane said:

That is debatable.  He [Xynth] played strong with Oak in our 2 vs 2 today until he completely blew the game at the end by forcing me to port right to defend a portal against beast even after I told him in plenty of time, watch that one while I defended you (Queen) on the left.  Not only that after I died locking the right portal he just let the other one get taken.  Pretty sure any English speaking tier 2 player would've listened in that situation and not cost us the game.  Is he decent with anyone other then Oak?

Cow said (moo):

He plays a lot of characters, and just because he made one mistake in that game doesn't mean hes a terrible player. I am sure you have made a mistake before too.

McShane said:

I've made probably thousands but I'm not sure there's been many times where I directly cost my team the game after I was asked to do something that would have saved it.  Also I'm not saying that he is terrible, I've seen much worse, but the criteria for tier 2 isn't just "not be terrible."

cow:

Imo if he wasn't tier II worthy the game wouldn't of lasted like an hour. He certainly pulled his weight in that game and many other times I have played with him he has done very well but I can't find a damn replay

Mcshane:

I agree he pulled his weight until the end where he blew the game in the last 5 minutes. Does pulling your weight for 90% of a game still count? That's where we have a disagreement. However if I hadn't made a couple silly mistakes we wouldn't have been in position for him to lose the game like that so I'm partly to blame too.

Anyway, my 2 cents is that I generally do think that tier 2 is appropriate for him.  I do agree with the criticism McShane had in that sometimes he just does whatever he thinks is best even if it probably isn't for the team - or to put it another way, I don't find myself agreeing with him on tactics.
Does he generally get the job done?  Yes.  He does buy citadel upgrades as appropriate.  Can having him on your team be a liability?  Yes. Even during my last game with him as a teammate, he was making some interesting calls.  We lack flag control or the ability to hold any of the 3 mids on cata for > 25 seconds.  Logical conclusion - buy some locks to get control back and at least throw the rhythm of the other team.  He didn't agree or that pissed him off that I request people get locks because he knows how to play (i think that's what he means by "being babysat by a bunch of control freaks").  At the beginning of the match, he was solo on the mana side and indicated that he wouldn't be going to middle much (which meant oak or oc would have to go back and forth).  He got angry with me when I didn't go to fight 2 higher hp dgs on a flag they control when I had him there for support.  This would have resulted in their 3rd character porting in and probably killing 1 or both us after i had to use a shield to save either him or me (and we still would have had 0 flags).  And even if the 3rd character didn't port in, all they had to do was target reg and that would have been enough.  Hell, even back at the character selection screen he probably should have considered another character.  Not because reg isn't viable, but I knew before the game started that our 3rd player isn't on the same level as the competition.  This meant to me that I should go with one of my stronger characters.  Again, another tactical decision.  We didn't lose that game primarily because of him (Oc was the weakest link on our team and put us into a situation where we were going to lose), but that's just what I mean by tactics.  Maybe my tactics are flawed, but I know I don't agree with his. I could have been whoever Xynth thinks is the best in the game, but there was no chance of winning that game with the 3rd person on the team being more squishy than a reg that has to run after 1 second from every fight.

on Apr 30, 2010

Ok Xynth is tier 2. I'll vouch for him. We have even worse players on that Tier 2 list (and arguably in Tier 1 ) so why not shove him in there.

And Mithrandar still not being in Tier 1 is blasphemy I tell ya. If there's 1 guy that can take on Orcun's UB - it's Mithrandar.

on Apr 30, 2010

At the beginning of the match, he was solo on the mana side and indicated that he wouldn't be going to middle much (which meant oak or oc would have to go back and forth).

I said i wasn't going to be getting Mana flag often, to stay in range for HP snipes.and  of course i would take mana when the opportunity arose.

He got angry with me when I didn't go to fight 2 higher hp dgs on a flag they control when I had him there for support.

mad at the fact that a tier 1 player can't simply tell his HP partner to get back to the HP flag. and it was more like being frantic too the both of you.

This would have resulted in their 3rd character porting in and probably killing 1 or both us after i had to use a shield to save either him or me

you shielded me once and it was unnecessary. and i had no intention of pushing HP with you, agreeing with you on the fact that 2 of them could kill me with ease at level 3. It was tactical4 that made the mistake of going mana, while i was trying to take xp.

We lack flag control or the ability to hold any of the 3 mids on cata for > 25 seconds.  Logical conclusion - buy some locks to get control back and at least throw the rhythm of the other team.  He didn't agree or that pissed him off that I request people get locks because he knows how to play

we were all in the midst of 1st shop rotation, where you decided to buy currency without talking about it, only saying that you probably have to get it, and went and did it before i had a chance to say anything, the thought even crossed my mind to buy you something to make up for that bad decision on your part. when you know, as well as many other experienced players know, that a reg is the logical choice for currency. a reg farming mana, even more so. you buying it on mistrust and arrogance not only weakened you, but gave me gold that i didn't need at the time, and changing my plans. my fault for not saying off the bat that i was buying currency, kind of thought you even expected it.

telling someone to get flags is an obvious task. which might of been the reason OC went mana. confusion. maybe next time say 2 HERE, GO XP FLAG. not as vague as GET FLAGS, GET FLAGS. your Tier 1 pacov, but you type like a noob. and NEED vent. You rely on it, and it is a flaw you brought into the game as well.

we could of had a kill, but you let him run into the fog with 250 hp, when you know i wouldn't of had tracking at level 3. and you did so with 3/4 of your hp and because their oak was on the way. you didnt even ask for the snipe, like you forgot you had a reg on your team, even though i had just shot him and given you the balls to attack him. like i said in game, milliseconds longer and i had him. again, my fault for assuming you know your stuff. should of updated my 8 second cooldown for you.

and did you even look at the war score? i know i did, and i didn't even bother responding to you because you were flipping out over nothing. it is borderline useless to waste money on locks when your level 3. not to mention i had currency on the mind, but you fudged that up. the difference was maybe 300, and it was a matter of time before they went to shop.

your non stop complainging is what set me off. you talk about tactics, but you had nothing constructive to say during that match. and if you think saying GET FLAGS over and over is constructive, it is not, it slows your thought and reactions down because your not focused, making you a liability.

as for McShane, he hasn't had enough games with me to have a serious opinion on me. I once had a DA build in his game with no mana helm, that 1 action branded me a noob in his mind. even though we have won tough games together. i'm sorry that i don't research on the internet what the best builds are and copy what everyone else is doing, and have to tweak mine from time to time. that DA build has unbreakable boots, natures reckoning, and all plus skills. ends up being alot of mana, and enough mp regen. and if you still think i am a noob, ask your clans founder, omincronlyrea. and how many times we smacked others around throughout epoch2. i was offered to be its second member.

Jaws8you and I played a 2v2. not even 60 seconds into the game did he start complaining about what I was doing. we had HP flag, they had XP and MP. he was at HP flag with someone wanting control of it. our tower had just taken a beating and was below half of its health. I started towards him, he said he was fine and went off on how i should be getting the other flags. straight up non stop grief about it.

my thoughts. help defend HP flag that had just gotten FS1 instead of throwing that investment away and letting two of them push jaws back and finishing it off before it can sustain an attack. there wasn't even a 50 point difference in warscore. and the tower would have been able to last longer.  but  jaws, who i had one many, many games with, yelled at me like i was a red-headed stepchild. now you decide what is the better decision, the one i am already making, or turning around and wasting that time?. i know if i was the other team, i would want that tower down a.s.a.p, while its weak, and finish it even if it means taking a few hits. they would have taken hp from him while i was getting xp, than gotten a head start on finishing the tower while i rush to his aid. i might not of even gotten the xp flag in that time.

I wasn't going over to him to pick the daisies by his feet. it was just cause. but i don't deserve to be reamed out because your opinion is different. and maybe not even better. and with vent, it takes just the push of a button to let someone have it.

thats my thought process, and i flipped on jaws just as i did pacov. I am tired of hearing someone cry over a game when i am trying to have fun, people that i have played with for months become babies over 1 simple choice. in a game that they will continue to play a thousand more games of. There is no reward when you hit a certain number of wins. and freaking out on people will only cost you their friendship.

I consider myself tier 1, thanks. and i don't care if i am not on your 'list'. i have played many games with you lag wars crew, and have many occasions were i wonder just what the hell you guys were doing, but did i say anything???..lol..no...i get told i dont talk enough. but i dont ream someones choice of direction out, i read off of it, i follow their lead, and be their teammate.

Xynth is already in the tier 2 list. http://pantheon.demigodthegame.com/game/1361942/player/28414/.  Recommending a guy to tier 1 after a beating < an hour ago though... should have been somewhat even based on our tier list anyway.  It wasn't.  It was a fun game though.
