Pacov's place to enjoy the show.

Update 5/25/2017

  • This thread is all done.  I've lost interest in jibba jibbing here, but its been fun.  Thanks for all the memories.
  • I am streaming from time to time on twitch - generally just when I'm trying hard in ranked though.  If interested, you can check that out here:  https://www.twitch.tv/pacovdumptruck

Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...).  That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike.  You can find the previous thread (now archived) here:  https://forums.joeuser.com/413863.  I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.

What’s this thread all about?
For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to.  Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like.  I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL.  Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.

Quick background on me
I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out.  I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

A thing that was talked about and a general agreement with everyone that was there was that for the winner of the entire season (highest number of wins at the end of the season) gets a mystery gift from every other person in the league. This way there isn't a big money burden for every individual and the winner actually gets quite a lot of mystery gifts. I understand if Pacov doesn't want to participate in this because of the auto draft but if pacov wins the whole she-bang he will not be getting mystery gifts (IMO pacov's team is pretty decent).

So far the people that seemed for this were:

  1. karl
  2. cow
  3. hedgie
  4. sniper
  5. bosshound

don't remember 100% if Brad and Honey agreed. I remember brad dipped pretty fast after the draft.

I'm fine with paying for a mystery gift for the winner.  If I somehow win, however, I'll need some other sort of prize as I can no longer by mystery gifted (some 6-7 skins left).  Also, are you saying I can't win because the auto draft thing gave me an unfair advantage somehow?

When does this start btw?  Eg when should I log in and choose my "starters" for the initial run?

on Jan 19, 2015

Your starters are already chosen automatically by the draft. If you want to change them you have a few days to do so. The first games are being played on Thursday at which point the starting rosters for all teams will be locked in. You can change your starters the following week if they suck.

I was saying if you didn't want to participate in the prize I wouldn't of cared since you auto drafted which is usually a bad practice in fantasy sports. If you are in though no worries, I didn't want to pressure you into doing something you theoretically will have a disadvantage in.

If Pacov wins the fantasy league we can figure out a prize at that time. Maybe a case of Soda Shaq from all the losers haha.

I think last year the starting players on your fantasy team were locked in the day before the first game of the week. I might be wrong on that though. Anyway if that is the case Wed would be when you can no longer make line up changes for the week.

To be clear:

You can change your starting roster from week to week by swapping out an alternative player with a starter.

Also:

The "Flex" pick in your starting line up can be any position but you most likely will want an ADC or Mid lane player as your Flex pick because they usually generate the most points from kills and CS.

Yeah - i'm in for mystery gift bit - I still don't own some cheap skins, so perhaps I'll have peeps buy those if I win.

I'm trying to get a handle on how often I need to be involved.  So, we have a game coming up thursday.  I'll be head to head with 1 other team.  When is the next matchup?

on Jan 19, 2015

You are matched against a different team each week.

In principle, you could do almost nothing all season since there are really no injuries or byes, so you don't need to rotate players if you don't want.  Your starters will just remain the same each week.  You can choose to be more active once a week or so and look to improve your team by trying to pick up better players though.

Krazikarl

You are matched against a different team each week.

OK - so its literally 1 week blocks then?  I can't view any schedule at work that I know of - is there a published schedule somewhere? Thanks

on Jan 19, 2015

The website has the complete schedule week to week. This week I play vs Hedgie's team next week it will be vs some one elses team, you can tab through the weeks to see upcoming match ups.

Just saw this re: the upcoming nemesis mode (new featured gameplay mode (think urf) where you pick your enemy teams champs)- "we also have a special reward icon planned for players who don't leave or dodge any games of Nemesis Draft throughout the mode's run. " - L4T3NCY

I am considering streaming. Would you guys be interested in watching? currently I would have to buy a second monitor and a new desk to accomodate said monitor. If I do invest I wouldn't mind some help from you Pacov in showing me the ropes as I find your stream to be pretty good quality in terms of layout, picture quality, no nonsense with showing random browsing online (I assume you have a monitor dedicated to other activities than the game you are playing) etc.... Just a vague idea not sure how serious I am about it yet.

I don't mind helping you out, but I really don't think its super worth the time.  You actually lose quite a bit of time getting a setup that you like, configuring overlays, etc.  You can always just do something basic - you could probably get something setup and configured that would work over about 4 hours - but if you are anything like me, you'll probably want to sink a TON of time getting a nice setup with good looking overlays, etc.  I've probably dumped maybe 50 hours into that sort of thing over the last couple of years (not terrible, but its sunk time).

The main question you've got to ask yourself is why do you want to stream?  If its just to try something out for fun, then sure.  A little disposable income and some time and you are good to go.  Then you've got to move along to who would watch you and why.  As it stands, I probably wouldn't watch you stream, but I'm sure some of our pals would - probably the same pals that watch me stream from time to time as well.  For me personally, I enjoy 2 things on stream.  High level play with commentary or just entertaining players.  Everything else I could give a rip about.  And I've never really heard you provide a monolog and that's what you'd need to do.  I don't think just streaming games while you play with pals is the best format either.  I know some of our pals would tune in for that sort of thing, but I can't think of many streamers that do that on the regular.

I can give you a rough formula that I think will work for most of our pals to give you a head start and get some pals watching, though.  Get something super basic setup soon to be able to stream.  If you want my help, I'll give it, but only after you try setting things up yourself (I'd rather not be the idiots guide for setting things up and instead just help when you have questions).  Then, stream a few basic games here and there.  Make sure things are coming through clear, sound levels are good/not annoying, etc.  Next, start working a little on monolog.  Play a game WITHOUT any voice chat, etc.  Start talking - give thoughts about the matchup, comment on why you do this or that.  Try to get in the habit of being talkative (your pals will find you annoying if you do this on voice chat later eh ).  Being talkative is what makes watching you more entertaining than just spectating a game you are in so I can see the pov of everyone.  So... you know... talk.

Then, the final bit that you can do right away, advertise here that you are going to start streaming your ranked placement series and say a specific time.  That's a really good place to start as our pals seem to like watching ranked play when I stream anyway.

But to circle back to my initial thought - its worth figuring out why you want to stream in the 1st place.  Odds are you aren't going to become the next big thing - so, even if you only have a handful of viewers, why?  Sure the idea of thousand of people being into you is cool, but do you still care if its just a few folks.  If so, then have fun with it.  If you are entertaining or really informative, I'd watch from time to time.

I have people ask me here and there why I'm not streaming as much and the reason is I don't think I'm doing anything all that super interesting currently.  If you stream, it might as well be something that is interesting to others, eh.

on Jan 20, 2015

The new ranked season is starting again so that is the reason I was thinking about doing it. Also a new desk, chair and monitor have been on my list of things for probably 3 years now, just an excuse to purchase them.

on Jan 20, 2015

bah - no excuse needed.  Nice to treat yourself now and then.  Do it to it.

Anyone know the 1st date for our fantasy stuff?  Just want to make sure I'm keyed into it (can't check that site at work)
