Am I streaming

Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

Here's a guide I made

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

well... that was extremely short lived.  They just took pbe down for maintenance.  I did get to try out udyr though. Still a mana whore, but should be nicer mid game and beyond levels.  The dash on his e only happens if you've recently activated E (eg the active is still active).  Not sure if you can dash to multiple targets or not on the same activate.  I'd think so, but don't know.  The dash is a gap closer.  Combine that with you being able to run through creeps when the active on E is going.  I think its a pretty good change and will make udyr fun and possibly viable out of top - still best as jungler though.  Here's a short vid of my time on pbe with him.  http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/b/380873599

If you want to see the dash, skip to 4:20 VIDEO TIME.  Best example is probably around the 6 min marker where you can get an idea of how much he distance he really closes.

ok pbe is back up - going to be streaming some more udyr in a bit.  Just in a bot match - nothing all that exciting, but check it out if you like.

karl's reply

I have no idea how I didn't see your reply until just now.  Well, I re-watched per your request and I still have pretty much the same opinion.  I don't dispute that I played poorly in the slightest.  I was quite, quite, quite, awful.  I'd rather not duo bot with you when you play leona as things stand.  That opinion is formed based on several games with your leona.

It's not simply the way you play leona (try to understand what I'm saying here for a moment), its that you and I get into our little bitch fests with each other.  Those bitch fests are more amplified when we are duoing in a lane and things aren't going well.  So, I'm already distracted by the bitch fest, then you start doing things with your position that I don't understand, which confuses and frustrates me more - and then if I ask you to do something differently, the bitch fest continues because you're "not a level 10" player or something.  Like 1 time when you wander off apparently to ward when we have good potential for a kill, I get distracted trying to figure out why you are breaking off when you are.  Little bits like communication help there - "pacov, hold hold on a sec - i need to ward."  Communication specifically when you are doing something I don't understand is quite helpful.  But communication is a problem because of the bitching.  Anyway, it just all escalates.  So I get bent out of shape from game 1 and then continue to be bitchy all night, etc.  I'm sorry for that.  Anywho, with you and me, voice chat is often already more of a hindrance than a help - pretty sure you and I already know that factoid, though.

I can't really tell if Lolking is having some issues with stats (looks that way atm), but it appears as if taric has fallen off as a top pick.  Personally, I don't think the fall off is due to the nerfs - mostly just the perception of weakness.  That said, all I care about is not seeing him in 100% of my ranked games.

on Mar 22, 2013

Yeah, their stat system seems to be down.  Last time I checked, he was around 47% win rate in Gold level play and around 49% for Plat, but that was just one day so who knows.  He'll probably rise up when people start realizing that there are going to be situations where he'd be a good or bad pick, instead of the "go to" support.

on Mar 22, 2013

I don't dispute that I played poorly in the slightest.  I was quite, quite, quite, awful.

Listen, if you play badly and the other person plays fine, please don't bitch at the support all night long and then write a long post about how they suck.  It's not appreciated.  I won't claim that I had the greatest game ever by any means, but I exited the laning phase 2/1, I couldn't have prevented any of your early deaths (they weren't my fault), and I even stole a dragon 1v4.  But despite the fact that I did fine and you, by your own admission, did not, I had to listen to you all night saying that I suck at support, and then I have to read a long post about how I suck.

Don't scapegoat your supports like that.  I don't like being blamed every time you have a bad game.  It is not appreciated or constructive.

Communication specifically when you are doing something I don't understand is quite helpful.  But communication is a problem because of the bitching.

"Communication" is not just me listening to you and you ignoring what I say.  It has to be a two way street.  I am constantly communicating why I am doing things.  You just don't listen if you have already decided ahead of time that you didn't like it.  You have no interest in listening to my reasoning for doing things.

Examples from that game:

You got upset when I went to ward river.  I calmly explained in chat that river had to be warded before we did an engage like that.  You didn't really listen, never acknowledged what I said, and kept complaining about it.

You complained that I wasn't standing near you.  I explained that I am close enough to use either my R or my E to counter engage if necessary.  I explain that I'm doing it to cut down on Jayce harass on me.  You don't even attempt to address my comments ever or further any kind of discussion, but just complain about it all night and then write a long post about how I'm wrong.  You aren't even discussing anything because you have not even acknowledged my explanation a single time.  You just repeatedly insist "you need to play exactly how I say" without ever even trying to enter into a discussion.

You complained that I wouldn't engage.  I explained that I can't do an all in when they are both near full health and you are at 1/3.  You never even respond to the argument despite the fact that I try and point this out multiple times.  Instead, you complain repeatedly about it and then write a big post (not even acknowledging the responses that I already made) about how I'm wrong.

So if you want to talk about communication, YOU MUST LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR TEAMMATES ARE ACTUALLY SAYING.  I'm trying to engage you in a reasonable discussion and telling you WHY I'm doing things.  You ignore that and just keep insisting that I need to do exactly what you say.

Like 1 time when you wander off apparently to ward when we have good potential for a kill, I get distracted trying to figure out why you are breaking off when you are.

I'm perfectly willing to discuss why I did things if you are willing to actually listen to my explanation.  If you disagree, thats fine, but at least try and further the discussion by acknowledging my argument and explaining why you disagree rather than just insisting over and over that I'm wrong with no rationale.

So, at what game time are you talking about?  I am more than willing to go back and look at it with an open mind.

He used to be that.  Taric has always been great against a physical damage lane, and only so so against a magic damage lane.  Shatter's armor boost was just wasted against AP supports with a char like Ez or Kog.  It kicked unholy ass against Graves.

Try beating a good Leona/Sivir lane as Taric.  He's nowhere near the power of Leona now and that chick is a hard counter for him to begin with.  2.75 seconds of stun, a momentary snare, and better AP damage than pre nerf Taric.  Her stun is still flat with the worst damage progression, a level 1 gimme.  She was always better, just a higher skill requirement because of no heal.  Now she just walks all over him, blowing through his heal and still surpassing his damage by a wide margin.

Taric is easy, but he hasn't been an OP support since they raped his armor aura.  Leona is hard, but OP as fuck.  They do have a similar problem though.  Both characters are completely worthless if your ADC is a retard and throws the lane.  You need to at least keep up as an initiator, Tarics ult is useless if he isn't fed enough to survive in team fights.

Edit: Just in case someone misreads, I'm ignoring this pissing match, or whatever it is.  I just realized I pulled a Leona reference that could be construed as applicable.

psychoak
Edit: Just in case someone misreads

no worries in the slightest.

Karl - I'm sure you can't relate to this on any level.  Have you ever just started bitching at someone and couldn't stop?  I'm not interested in doing some play by play analysis.  What's to say when I'm already saying I played awful in that game?  Good call, Karl.  We are both right.  I played awful there.  You are more right than me though.  I want to make that clear.

Anyway, this is about as fruitful as trying to have a conversation with you in game when we are in bitchy mode.  We either both try to censor ourselves in game, don't get in voice chat together for a bit, 1 of us be the bigger man and step out of skype if we are the problem or are offended.  There is a behavior problem that leads to snowballs of bitchiness.  That's what needs resolved.  Duoing in a lane currently begins the nasty process.

edit - fixed - Duoing in a lane AND being in voice chat currently begins the nasty process

This is an extremely uninformed thing to say.

The nicest thing about the current meta (and the reason Riot hasn't changed it) is that it has a place for literally every single role. Tank, control mage, burst magge, support, ranged dps, bruisers, assassins, AoE comps...

Go through the champion roster in LoL and there isn't a single character that doesn't fit into the meta. Unviable champions are not unviable because they don't fit the meta - they are unviable because they are numerically inferior and need a work.

Melee AD Carries (Yi, Trynd, Fiora)? Viable top lane, but Jax is just numerically better than them while doing the same thing.

Karma? Numerically inferior as a support, and her kit is focused on supporting melee carries, not ranged. Which is why you put her mid, and then Jax top, then use Lulu as your support (this is a very popular compision Najin Sword uses).

Heim? He's really strong mid lane 1v1 still - that isn't why he is weak.
Even then, all these characters are perfectly adequate at our skill level - it seems odd to say that you are frustrated by skill ceiling when you aren't plat/diamond. Maybe what you mean to say is that you don't feel correctly rewarded for being able to carry a game 1v5 - and DotA2 does. That doesn't mean that DotA has a higher skill cap though - it just means they have super crazy hyper carries that create binary games (you either shut them down or you don't and they win: see nunu kog).

Furthermore, it seems odd that having an expected framework to create a teamcomp lowers skill.

In fact, it seems like it increases it. i'm not sure how being able to throw together 5 heroes and have it work... raises the skill cap? If "anything" works then doesn't that lower the burden of knowledge?

Figuring out teams is part of the metagame and a required piece of knowledge for competitive players.

Not to mention there is a huge debate whether or not "cheese" is a skill or not. That is a holy war i'm not going to go into.

Let me clarify. The DotA 2 team captains have their own frameworks, but they mold them based on the draft pick system that they have in place. (ban1, ban2, ban1, ban2, pick1, pick2, pick2, pick1, pick1, pick2, ban1, ban2, ban1, ban2, ban1, ban2, pick1, pick2, pick1, pick2) The captain of each team makes the picks and bans, and after the picks are completed, the team members will select their heroes.

There are a bunch of strategies that have been established as a meta (trilane support carry, solo all lanes + 2 junglers, permanently roaming midlaner, all mid, etc.) however, simply based on the picks a team captain has made, it is difficult to determine which of those strategies, if any, that team will be attempting. I did not intend for it to come across as "throw together 5 randoms and hope it works."

Secondly, I am not frustrated by a skill ceiling in League, I was simply making an observation based on my rather limited experiences (I don't watch every game, so I can't say that I know everything ) with both games' professional groups. I can't say I'm any good at either game, but I find DotA 2 to be more fulfilling and to possess a different(possibly better) community. (I believe that the trollish people from LoL haven't moved over because of their dedication to their sacred game.) I apologize if I came across as "this game bores me and my wonderfully amazing skills, pls make harder nao"

there do indeed exist hypercarries, but their ability to 1v5 the entire enemy team diminishes as the game progresses. (Unless they buy rapiers, and then they just become stupid) Carries are necessary as the game progresses through the late game because mages do not scale at all. They hit a damage cap and then basically become CC bots.

I suppose that you are right however, the skill of one person can and sometimes does make up for the failure of all other teammates, especially in the wonderful world of low-level play. (penta kill weaver game wherein I didst slay their entire team after an attempted 5-man gank) But cheese is very much a big part of DotA, and balance is dictated by hardcounters rather than rebalancing skillsets. The most overpowered DotA 2 characters aren't those who can instantly deal amazing damage or provide the most CC, but those who can fit into any team composition against any team.

hey - check out the new updated elophant site.  Actually pretty well done with access to useful stats quickly

http://www.elophant.com/league-of-legends/summoner/na/51229/recent-games

ah - and they have current stats for champ pick/win rates

http://www.elophant.com/league-of-legends/champion/taric/stats

Taric is down from a 56% win rate to 52%.  The % picked stat seems off, though.  they have him as picked 30 some % of the time vs lol kings 50+.  No idea here...

quick sleepy statement - your computer is poo.  Should not have to go through so much effort.  I'd bet money you have either failing ram or a crap mobo.  Really sorry its so much of a pain though.  I've built more than 100 pcs and am a huge pc hardware nerd.  Throw out some specifics about your pc along with troubles.  LoL only?  How often.  When are crashes, etc.  Will help if I can.

lots of fun games tonight.  Stayed up wayyyyyy toooo fucking late.  Brain was not working last game and not much now... anyway, night and thx for the games everyone.

short public apology as well.  I wasn't really upset about karl's supporting ability and I included him in my passive aggressive rant.  Karl's a fine support.  My only gripe was about how he and I bitch each other out and refuse to listen to each other. I should have just had that chat privately instead of being all bitch like.  My apologies are given and I'll try to refrain from such rot in the future.  Night all!
