Am I streaming

Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

Here's a guide I made

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them).  Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

*sharpy walks in to drop knowledge bombs*

Concerning Peter:

The way I see it, getting mad at him when you lose a game or a fight because you can't work around him is essentially the same thing as getting pissed off at yourself for inviting him. In other words... he's Peter. What were you expecting?

-insert Karl-worthy explanation of why you shouldn't have left us in mid to run away 4v5 against the hardest engage team known to man-

-insert Thunder-worthy expression of love towards all players who obv. did their best-

But, yeah. If you're going to invite him, don't bitch. You can't have your PeterDumpTruck and eat him too.

well, well, well.. lookey who made a forum account.  brain too sleepy to utilize wit.

Well, I think I figured out what was actually causing the problem on my stream.  I was toying around with the game capture plugin and I left that running along with the standard capture... so, essentially I was capturing data from roughly the same source twice.  That said, I also reduced the overall bandwidth needed.  I was hoping to multicast in several formats, but you can only do that if you are twitch partner apparently.  I also checked out streaming on youtube, but couldn't quite get that to work (also still kinda want to stick with twitch atm).  Anyway, now I'm only capturing from 1 source and am broadcasting at a lower rez.

I haven't had a chance to set it up yet, but there is a new microphone feature that I'm going to test out tonight that should help quite a bit as well.  My current setup has my mic open 100% of the time on stream as I don't use push to talk.  Will, open broadcaster added a new mic setup that will disable any of my mic feed if its a below a certain db level.  If that works well, the overall audio experience should be improved on stream as well.  Here's a link to a test vid I did in case anyone wants to see the quality difference and/or see if you are still getting any stuttering when watching the stream.

Thanks again to the folks that brought up the stream issues - hoping this resolves em

Pssh.

play with Peter and be nice. Don't worry. Be happy.

re: pete - hey, I like pete.  I'm going to bitch if anyone completely ignores what's going on around them. That said, I'm pretty sure I like better a  hell of a lot better in voice chat.  I did plenty of interesting things.  One thing I've noticed about myself that is pretty shitty, though, is that if I get pissed off enough at someone in a game, I am really inclined to go full retard.  Occasionally, I'm actually trolling (the game the other night where I was kog that would only stay bot lane for instance) - still was a good strategy imo btw .  Most of the time, sadly, I just make bad decisions when I get pissed off.  Sometimes I get a bit too pissed off too easily, eh.

ANyway, nothing new in the following, but I ripped it from reddit.  Good things to think about when jungling.

Hello! I am a Diamond IV Jungle and Support main.

I've been playing off and on since closed beta, but really took things seriously for Season 3.

I reached Diamond a month or so ago, went up to Diamond III, and after a losing streak from Diamond III down to Diamond IV, I took stock of what I thought I could be doing wrong, and re-evaluated my roles. This started out as just an exercise for myself, but after showing a friend, I'm taking his advice and posting it here.

I think this list could help a lot of Bronze-Gold junglers improve and move up, and I sincerely hope it does just that

NOTE: This is all just my opinion, and mostly applies to solo queue. Jungling in arranged 5's is a whole different animal. Please give me feedback and let me know what you agree with or what you think is wrong.

So, here we go. It's a long one!

Things I’ve learned while Jungling to Diamond (In No Particular Order):

1. Pick your Jungle based on team composition, not just who you want to play.

  • The Jungler has to fulfill different roles depending on the team composition, especially who your mid/top laners are.

  • Example: don’t just blindly pick Eve because you’re awesome and expect to carry with ganks. If you’ve got a Chogath mid and a Renekton top, go ahead and play Eve! Kill that AD carry, because your team doesn’t need a front line jungle.

  • However, if you have something like a Nidalee top and a Xerath mid, your team is going to need you as the front line and some CC, so you’ll want to play a jungler like Nasus or Volibear to fill that spot.

  • If you are first pick, try to choose a jungler that will work well in many team comps (my personal favorite is Lee Sin, but something like J4 or Xin will work here – you can be front line if you need to be, or you can build damage if your team needs that). Also, picking a front-line tank jungle is rarely a bad thing.

  • I’d recommend having 3 or 4 “main” jungles that you are comfortable with, so you can fill what your team comp needs.

2. Watch opponents’ items.

  • This is especially important when it comes to your first double-buff gank opportunity. If the enemy Top Laner has Red Elixir and 4 HP Pots, he probably has a ward somewhere. Going straight up the river will likely not work. If he’s got cloth+5, don’t worry about taking a sneaky route to the lane!

3. Patience pays off.

  • When you’re going for a gank, don’t just run into lane. Get yourself into position and wait for the enemy to make a wrong movement. Wait for him to go get that CS. THEN jump in for the gank. Waiting that extra 10-15 seconds can really make a huge difference.

4. Ganks can be successful without netting a kill.

  • Burning enemy summoners will let your lanes have an easier time, and is a successful gank.

  • If your lane is having a hard time farming and you can push their laner back to base, that was a successful gank. Now your lane gets some time to catch up.

  • In some particular situations, you can even help your lanes by just coming up and hanging out there, letting them cs freely without being harassed. You see this commonly in pro games.

5. Keep Track of Enemy Summoners

  • Enemy blew flash the first time you ganked? Come back! Especially jungling someone like Maokai, if you know their flash is down you can feel confident in Flash+W to get the kill on the next gank.

6. Counterjungling is dangerous!

  • A lot of people want to “outjungle” their opponents and take their buffs, proving that they are the “better jungler.” While counterjungling is powerful, you need to understand the risks involved, especially in Solo Queue.

  • Watch the position of your lanes vs. enemy lanes before you go into the jungle. Especially when invading near bot lane (invading red when you’re purple side or blue when you’re blue side). Getting caught in the enemy jungle is an easy way to get yourself killed, and an easy way to bait your teammates into deaths also.

  • If the enemy jungle is ganking a lane and you’re across the map unable to help, that is the best and most risk-free time to counterjungle.

7. Dying with double buffs early is one of the WORST things you can do.

  • On behalf of top laners everywhere, please do not make overly risky ganks with double buffs. If something goes wrong, you get counterganked, your level 3 dive SOMEHOW doesn’t work, etc., not only did you just feed a kill to the enemy team, but you probably just lost your top lane in the process.

  • As mentioned previously, your objective in ganking is not always to get the kill. Do not do something stupid trying to get one.

8. Keeping up in Experience is very important.

  • This is especially true when playing very gank-heavy early jungles like Lee Sin, or jungles that are not very good at clearing camps quickly.

  • When your lanes go back, go hold their lanes and soak up the XP. It will be faster than farming the jungle and you can go get your camps when your laner is back.

  • Level-wise, you should aim to be somewhere between the Support and the Midlaner. If you notice yourself falling behind the Support, seek out sources of experience to catch up.

9. Buy Wards. LOTS of Wards.

  • Yeah, I know this is what everyone says, but it’s true. If you’ve got the space, pick up a few wards.

  • If your top lane doesn’t have a ward, ward for him! Don’t just complain when he gets ganked and didn’t see it coming; even though you may not be there to counter-gank, you can at least give him a chance.

  • Giving your team more vision not only helps them avoid ganks, but it makes your job as jungler easier. As the jungler, you also have easier access to “deep” ward the enemy jungle/buffs/etc.

  • When you think you want to try dragon soon, ask your bot lane to pink dragon, or just pick up a pink yourself.

10. Your job is to get your LANES fed, not yourself.

  • It is almost always better, if possible, to give your lanes the kill. This will put them further ahead, making your job easier, and letting your team press objectives more easily. Top/Mid/ADC will usually scale much better with gold than junglers, especially the current meta of tank/aurabot jungles.

  • If your laner is in danger of dying, disregard the above and secure the kill as fast as possible.

11. Communicate and Be POSITIVE!

  • This is more general than just jungling, but I find it even more important in this role. As jungle you interact with the other lanes the most. As such, it’s very helpful to develop a positive relationship with your lanes. It can lead to more successful ganks, more efficient use of your time, and better winrates!

  • If you want a smiteless leash so that you can gank top with double buffs, let your team know! Let your top laner know if you want him to have a certain skill at level 2 (example: ask your Shen to get taunt second so you can have the cc for your gank).

  • Ask your lanes where the wards are, or if the enemy has flash. They’ll be happy to provide the info (if they can) in order to help your gank.

  • I will often ask “how’s top lane going” if there hasn’t been much action there. Your laner will usually tell you it’s fine, but they will know you aren’t forgetting about them, and if they do need help they will ask rather than rage.

  • If you’re going to be leaving a lane alone to focus on another area, let them know. Example: if your bot lane is winning but top and mid are behind, tell your team “I’m gonna camp mid and top, bot lane be careful.”

  • (Obligatory but true) -- Don't rage, and apologize for mistakes if you make them. If your teammate makes a mistake, don't scold them for it. Arguing helps nothing.

I hope this helps some players! It's been a helpful process for me to write it. Good luck in the jungle, everyone

okey - I think I sorted the noise gate bit on my vid stream setup.  I THINK you should only hear when I'm talking, background music, game sounds, and skype.  Should be a noticeable improvement.  I'm debating doing a short rant vid every few nights or so... i also get the impression I should never, ever, rant about karl.  I'll probably be more jibber jabbering about ranked and lol related stuff... also i might not do this at all.  If I do, I'll linky here.

Anyway, going to start streaming in a few minutes - just getting 1st win of the day on my alt account and then switching to my main for some games after that.

Oh - if you do check out the stream, please call out any issues, etc, asap, while all the tweaking crap is in muh head.
