Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards. 

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character. 
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it. 

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles. 

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

heh... I so want to play at least 1 game with a troll team.  I was just thinking about (apparently I think about strange crap on lunch breaks from time to time) having a teemo or rat or eve  tp to a tower as soon as the game started after buying a sight ward.  You wouldn't need to tp if you were eve or the rat, ofc.  Anyway, if it was teemo, he'd tp to the tower at the start, then place a ward at the back corner of wolves as quickly as possible.  Then, he'd stand in the bushes by blue golums and go stealth. This gives full line of sight to golums and wolves.  Anyway, everyone on the team would have to take tp.  Depending on the setup of the defense, 2 could come from the river and the other 2 could tp in where no one would expect them.  Or all could tp in and then gank. I think those tping in would be out of line of sight so they wouldn't be seen by the enemy when they port in. 

Anyway, I hope I end up on a team at some point for some silly arse trolling fun at some point.  Even though its quite ridiculous, you could pull crap like that throughout the game if everyone was coordinated enough.  Delightfully trolly.

The usual thing to do is to have something like a Rammus with Ghost and TP.  Buy boots and a ward, tp to a tower, ghost/powerball to some weird spot on their side of the map, and everybody tps there right away.  If the other team even thinks about their items (or comments on all the tps), your team can be at their blue before their team.  Which makes for a funny surprise when the other team shows up to protect blue.

Of course, a non stupid team will notice all the TPs, expect shenanigans, and do something to counter it.

ok - so I have 8 characters left to unlock on my main.  I'm about to hit 6300 ip and trying to decide who to pick up... here's who is in the running in my mind - ziggs, sejuani, viktor, and maokai.

I'm sadly leaning towards viktor... but mostly because I've never played as him and want to give it a go.  I played ziggs when he was free.  He's an ok AP carry and I play him well... I'm guessing that will be what folks think I should pick anyway.

 

That said, I have a few characters that I picked up when they were on sale for RP.  Xerath was one of them.  In the video ABOVE during the replay/discussion, doublelift mentioned that he thinks xerath is amazing, but only 2 players (read - 2 players in the 2 million plus lol player base) play him well.  This got me interested.  Anyway, I gave him a go and easily dominated with him.  Granted, it was just a few normals... but it was literally my 3rd game or so.  Anyway, super strong ap carry.  The BIGGEST advantage is that because he isn't played much, players don't seem to understand how his abilities work and how strong he is.  I found I could EASILY time out my q to mess with folks mid.  And if someone EVER considered diving me (last game I had 3 try to dive me at a tower... I killed all 3), you can cast your e and then use any ability to stun.  its incredibly powerful.  Especially with your AOE ult that you can cast 3 times.  And if you have relais scepter (I get that as a core item), every attack slows making follow up attacks easy.  Plus, and this is the biggest thing, he gets armor as a passive based on how much ap he has.  This means non ap carries can't hurt him quite as much.  So, if you destroy mid like I did both games, they don't have much of an answer for you.  Anyway, I like.  Will play him some more.  I'm really trying to hone in my best AP carry mid.  My brand is pretty solid, my grag is great but I can only get kills against decent folks with a jungle assist (but I never die)... anyway, fun games tonight.

Figures after finally getting my computer going, I get extremely sick with the flu... I should be on tonight though. Would love to play a game!

Maokai is a lot of fun. People underestimate his damage and the usefulness of his ult. I think his strongest role right now is jungling. TheOddOne has a good guide here: http://solomid.net/guides.php?g=11784

He isn't bad as a bottom support role either, but it isn't always easy to do enough sustained damage against true supports in my experience.

Xerath is easy to dominate if you know how to dodge his abilities, for example, Ziggs is my main (I recommend him, superior map control and absurd range, what's not to love?), and I consider it worth it to pop a W the very instant he uses his E, that way I jump away from his followup, even if he has a Rylai's...

Viktor is quite fun also, but he REALLY falls off late-game, and can't do ANYTHING except his ult...

Viktor is better played as an aura support offtank mid, if you really want to play him...

his role as an AP Carry isn't very good, in my opinion...

Maokai is very hard to use, and if you don't know how to use him you fall off late-game...

but if you farm enough and maintain a strong presence, you will be unstoppable...

Sejuani is just silly...

she's kinda like Amumu, but in my opinion, better, as you really can't escape from her once she gets in auto-attack range, unlike with Amumu, who has to have his ult to keep you in place...

Once Sejuani has her ult, she can crush lanes like a grape...

 

Ziggs is my favorite champ, and of course I'm going to be biased towards him...

his damage gets quite insane with only a little bit of farm, and with practice (muahaha, hours and hours and hours) you can hit people who are sitting under tower with your Q from the middle of midlane...

his W has some weird glitches, and is an astonishingly good escape tool...

For example, I leave mid after killing their Veigar to go help top, I get behind their tower in the grass (they were blue and I was purple) and get set up to "dive" their Garen (Ziggs can do that without getting in tower range) my team rushes in, and lo and behold, Jungle Xin AND nasty nasty Veigar come rushing towards my little patch of grass...

I had burned my flash earlier to escape Xin's gank, so I quickly set up a W to pop over the wall, but I misclick, and fire myself towards the tower instead of towards the river...

but

it glitched

and I flew an obnoxious distance (from that patch of grass all the way over that giant corner to the furthermost edge of the river) and escaped this absolute death...

I've tried to replicate it, but I've only hit the wall and slid down... How strange...

Anyways, Ziggs' E has a variety of uses, if you are worried about a jungler, you set bombs in the bushes and listen for explosions...

if their mid commits to a fight, you laugh and drop the whole set of mines on their head and a Q...

The mines will do FAR more than the Q will do, even if the mines are a lower level than your Q, just make sure that you don't put a W on them or the mines won't be as effective...

I've had Vaynes and other silly mids try to commit to a fight that they think that they'll win, and when I am able to land a full burst, they die almost instantly...

has a surprise factor, they see the skull and they know in that split second, that it was pure foolishness to suppose that they would have escaped...

MUAHAHA

anyhow, I save my ults for when I have to B and my lane is being pushed hard, I just pop it and demolish the wave...

I save them for when someone overcommits and I need the massive burst.

I save them for when a gank is happening so I get the kill or the assist

I save them for buff steals and baron or Dragon steals (takes skill to steal em, I've done only two dragon steals to date and no Baron steals...)

mayhaps, but if he tags you with e and then ults, you can't dodge... you can just stand there or try to flash away while you are burst into nothing.  And I find that once I do lock down that e, even if I'm not looking to ult, the movement pattern of the enemy is MUCH easier to predict... resulting in a stun + another ult mayhaps.  Anyway, for raw burst, I'm loving him.

There is a delay on all of Xerath's abilities, even his E, and of course I'm not going to be close enough that there is no response time.

He fires an E and I'm gone; I'll burn a flash, I'll do ANYTHING to get away from him ASAP...

I'm not staying there to be hit by his full burst...

If I stay out of range of his abilities, he still has his W combo, but as he's casting his abilities, I'm going to be casting mine, and it's probable that Xerath is going to die first, as he's snared and I can get an ensured combo hit on him...

On top of the fact that I can use my W to quickly move, and I can cast my abilities while I'm flying through the air...

it requires reflexes, THERE CAN BE NO: "oh dear, Xerath just stunned me"

there has to be a: "his arm is moving for the E animation, I've gotta react!"

 

I've been told that I play LoL too much, now that I know almost EVERY champ's casting animation and delay...

Xerath's delay is interesting, his E is almost instantaneous, but his Q and R have a rather long delay before damage is actually dealt, which gives me plenty of time to dodge...

yeah, but its the same with all characters.  Doesn't matter if you miss your big hits from time to time.  It's those times when someone blows it. And if someone blows it vs xerth, there is generally no escape. 

Anyway, I loved playing as ziggs when he was a freebie, he's pretty close to being my number 1 pick re: who to buy with IP.  His ult is super fun, his mobility and utility are great.  Based on ultilization, though, I'd wager xerath is due for a buff as well.  I really like the overall skill design on xerath.  If you do get into a situation where you can plant yourself using your w, you can quickly cast a spell or series of spells for that bonus magic penetration.  Then you can drop out of the w and you get a 30% move bonus. That move bonus, plus relis scepter means that if I hit someone at range, I've slowed them... and now I move faster than them, and then I can cast my e and ult for a stun + huge nuke. And his passive gives him % armor per AP.  It's like having an AP carry that doesn't need to worry a heck of a lot about AD carries (eg what should be a natural counter for AP is AD).  Anyway, love the additional range on his q for group battles as well.  Very nice to be able to put the hurt on from a distance.  I strangely ended up laned at mid vs a vayne yesterday.  It did not go well for her... even with the dodge ability.  Anyway, obviously I could only be so so with xerath after 3 games or so.  I'm excited to keep working on him as a mid.  But, as things go with me, I'm likely going to be excited about player a different character in 1-3 days

Don't get me wrong, I've been bashing Xerath this whole time...

I also bought him when he went on sale...

against bots, as I've said before, he just crushes them until you are laughing with glee at the endless pentakills...

in Normal I've had some luck with him, but I've mostly played him against DPS-oriented champs like Swain and Malzahar, and Xerath doesn't like DPS...

well, I'm up to 11 or so games as xerath.  I've lost 0 games due to my fault in my estimation anyway.  I have had like 2-3 losses out of 11 or so in normals though.  really though, I've been pretty solid.  X = my current fav mid.  So strong.

I've been meaning to take up Xerath as soon as I'm over my crush on Veigar, but I still love the little dude's style too much to give him up.  When he's countered I just go Annie and hope for the best, since I'm just not feeling the idea of learning a high skill champ for a role I never get to play.  Support again?  Wow, amazing... love this fucking game.

I was talking to an AP specialist the other day who set me straight on the idea of Veigar countering Xerath.  It all boiled down to the idea that a good Veigar player counters a good Xerath, but a great Xerath on a good team counters just about everything.  Cept for that anti AP autobans of course...

I've also heard that a good Ziggs makes everyone unhappy, not necessarily outright countering, but he can lane against just about anyone due to his range, and the same can be applied to Xerath...

What I believe makes Xerath > Ziggs is that Xerath can survive without blue buff, whereas Ziggs really needs it...

although Ziggs has absurd early game power and no true hard crowd control, he can still make Xerath's life really annoying by tossing a bomb at him at every chance...

I dunno, I've never really played against a good Xerath...

I wish I could try out the Ziggs vs. Xerath matchup...

But Xerath can spam without blue buff, while Ziggs cannot, he has to be very careful with his abilities or else he runs dry too quickly...

nah - its roughly the same with xearth re: mana.  The extra cdr just lets xer get in an extra hit here or there while enemies are in range... and potentially get off another stun.  It really makes a huge difference mid if you are fairly evenly matched.  I know what you mean, though.
