Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

zil's a tough character to play really well.  He can do a solid job as an ap carry mid and can be quite useful as a support.  With the right setup on wards, you can completely dominate the botton lane as zil and enable your carry to farm very easily.  His bombs with the aoe are pretty much begging to have him as an ap carry, though.

Anyway, you likely know the basic tips, like setting a bomb, casting rewind, then setting the bomb on the same character again for  and instant explosion + dbl dmg (eg 2 bombs).  You can't really do that too often early game, though - so its really just a zoning/harass game.  His ult isn't a useful (imo) as yorrick's - sure, with yorrick's ult, you are dead, but ranged ad carries coming back from that ult generally know its time to go apeshite - as they are dead.  With zil's, you come back alive - but with lower hp - and often those ranged ad carries will just bugger off as quickly as possible... or the ult will be done in such a way that the enemy can just swarm the guy coming back to life.  Anyway, imo, its a useful ult, but tricky to use in the correct situations - and that's all your mid and late game stuff.  He's fun to play, but I don't really use him anymore as he's not as useful a support due to the high mana costs.  I'm glad they made some changes to him, but I don't think it goes far enough.  Consider a common support situation.  Let's say a jungler is coming to gank bot lane.  Its a 3v2 scenario (with you and your ranged ad carry on def).  If you decide to fight anyone at all, then you will have to ult yourself or your carry.  Then you'd also likely need to cast all of your spells + get 2 bombs off.  Eg you likely don't have enough mana if you've been zoning do this on a support build.  Or say you decide to run.  You likely cast your speed move on your ranged ad carry as he's most likely exposed (eg you are prob in the bushes, he is the most likely to die).  So you cast your speed on him, he gets out, and now they are all on you.  You can flash if you have it, or then ult yourself, but if you get caught, you'll revive with lower health and count on your squishy ranged ad carry to push back 3 of them while you are dead.

Anyway, good map awareness can help there, but in my experience, its difficult to make sure you have adequate mana if you are zoning hard to avoid situations like that.

Blitz can be a game changer for sure. Probably more effective if you are running duo queue bot though. You really need a competent AD with Blitz, otherwise the sustain is going to slowly do you in. Make the right grab and you have an instant kill.

I find jungle Twitch can be great early/mid game, but even with snowballing you fall off hard late game. You need good peelers and cc to keep you alive in teamfights.

As for the meta...I find it getting repetitive and dull. Playing top you have two options, harass a bit and go all in for a kill or passive farmfest until jungler comes top. Mid=whoever twitch fingers first and bursts the other person down. Jungle, you pray that there aren't wards everywhere or that your team isn't 2 steps behind you when you try and gank. Bot, you out support sustain the other person. Whoever has the safer poke will probably farm more. Sorry for pessimism, I just find it getting stale.

I'm excited to see if the next champ (Varus) can spice bot up a bit. His charge up (range increases as you hold down skill) arrow has longer poke range than Caitlyn and interesting mechanics on spreading blight, which might help against sustain, along with his AOE slow and healing debuff. Here are details based on Public Beta Environment stats. I'm assuming some of these numbers will be toned down, because he sounds super powerful!

Varus

Living Vengeance (passive)
On kill or assist, Varus temporarily gains Attack Speed. This bonus is larger if the enemy is a champion. (I think 40% for champ and 20% for minion)

Blighted Quiver
Passive: Varus' basic attacks deal 10/15/20/25/30 (+0.2) bonus magic damage and apply Blight for 6 seconds (stacks 3 times).
Varus' other abilities detonate Blight, dealing magic damage equal to 2/2.8/3.5/4.3/5% (+0.01%) of the target's maximum Health per stack (Max: 360 total damage vs Monsters)

  • Cost - 55/60/65/70/75 Mana
  • Range - N/A

Chain of Corruption (ult)
Varus flings out a tendril of corruption that deals 150/250/350 (+1) magic damage and immobilizes the first enemy champion hit for 2 seconds.
The corruption then spreads towards nearby uninfected enemy champions, applying the same damage and immobilize if it reaches them.

  • Cost - 100/45/50 Mana (Bug?)
  • Range - N/A

Hail of Arrows
Varus fires a hail of arrows that deals 60/100/140/180/220 (+) physical damage and desecrates the ground for 4 seconds.
Desecrated Ground slows enemy Movement Speed by 20/24/28/32/36% and reduces healing effects by 50%.

  • Cost - 70 Mana
  • Range - 925

Piercing Arrow
First Cast: Varus starts drawing back his next shot, gradually increasing its range and damage.
Second Cast: Varus fires, dealing 10/43/77/110/143 (+) to 15/65/115/165/215 (+) physical damage, reduced by 15% per enemy hit (minimum 33%).
While preparing to shoot Varus' Movement Speed is slowed by 20%. After 4 seconds, Piercing Arrow fails but refunds half its mana cost.

  • Cost - 70/75/80/85/90 Mana
  • Range - 925

AragornV
s for the meta...I find it getting repetitive and dull.

f the meta.  That's what I'm doing, at least, in non ranked games. heh - I've been solo top twitch, mid twitch, bottom with a singed, top with a blitz... ah - normal games.  Home of the wtf!?!

I wonder when varus will be out.  They are still finding crap they need to fix from the last patch.  Looking forward to that character as well.

AragornV
I find jungle Twitch can be great early/mid game, but even with snowballing you fall off hard late game.

I disagree a bit here about the late game.  It's really a matter of how you are playing it, if they have oracles at that point, etc.  Late game I'm a complete nightmare if I'm doing halfway decent.  All it takes is one guy being a little out of position and you drop him.  instant 5v4 fight coming up with me cloaking and disappearing.  I always join in on teamfights after being cloaked for some time and pick my spot wisely so I'm generally not immediately focused.  Plus with the stupid team comp that comes as going twitch, we might even have another ranged AD carry that will be the primary (eg if you can't see me, I'm not the primary, eh).  As soon as any of that focusing happens, I can pick off whoever I want, kill whoever is hanging back while their tank is doing their thing, etc.  I find him somewhat weak early game, but I'm fine with that as long as I can get some farm going.  The fun really starts when I get to roam and f up their jungle etc.  One game I must have crippled their entire jungle like 5 times over (leaving 1 tiny wrath, little golums, etc).  You can't counter jungle that aggressively without the invisibility.

I'll give you this, though, his abilities don't scale all that  well late game, imo, but his invisibility utility is still there and that compensates for me.  It's really mid game that I'm finding expunge to be very strong.  Once I'm hitting crits every 1 second for like 459 a pop late game, well, I don't quite care as much about a maxed expunge.  But I do still love running around invisible like a crazy bastard doing whatever I want at any given time.  Not to mention that he's exceptional at backdooring as well.

on Apr 23, 2012

You can't counter jungle that aggressively without the invisibility.

Oh but you can!  Shyvana is a great example as somebody who counterjungles while going top lane.  Even if she's spotted, she can escape pretty easily.

I'm actually fine with him, his high mana cost is actually not a problem with a few clarity runes. Usually in a lane if we lose it, its because of my partner not me. Only time I die is

1. I was ganked

2. 4 run my lane because me and my teammate are too much of an unstoppable force

3. I got greedy...this happens a lot with cass.

I have been having fun with Talon in Normal games, but so far I've gotten two games with trolls who feel that Talon should not go mid and they've fed on purpose...

(report button pushed)

I am on a winning spree with Viktor between Ranked and Normal... I think that my last loss with him was when I played with Pacov and Krazikarl and Pacov had the random dc and lags, and I had to unexpectedly leave...

I've also noticed that Viktor has several annoying bugs...

It is possible to cast his ult twice for twice the cost... (it's totally unfair, as it's an instagib for most champs early game... I just wait for someone to gank me and then I get a free double kill...)

his laser won't display its particles correctly if you don't aim it right, which, for some reason causes my computer to lag...

Soooo

I played Kog'Maw just once today...

I am quite astonished at how easily he kills his lane...

and then he carries effortlessly, no dodging around, just drop his slow, W, and right click the entire enemy team to death.

I am still partial to Ezreal, as he has no CC, is considered bad, and requires real skill to play well.

Yeahhhh

Varus has 3 Skillshots...

that's hard for some people to manage...

but I think that he'll be a better solo laner than an AD carry, honestly...

he has rather massive single-target harass damage that goes through minions...

He's like Graves + Caitlyn except with AP ratios...

not to say that he's a bad AD Carry, as I really like AD Ezreal, and I frequently get people who ignorantly flame me for playing a "mid champ"

on Apr 23, 2012

SK Ocelote is having massive fun with AP Blitzcrank in mid...

it's a reliable (what am I saying? for him at least, I need to try it more) pick, especially as his ratios are now really high...

He just positions himself right, hooks them, and nukes.

For a build, he rushes a deathcap and then a lich bane, and then just as many AP items as possible.

He's doing very well, especially since grabbing anyone will result in their instantaneous death.

Blitz can also farm very well once he gets his ult, as it clears an entire wave and comes back up in <30 seconds.

Continuing the previous conversation about mid AD vs. AP...

it's all about the burst...

Cait doesn't have the burst, but she has the poke, and she'll probably die in one combo even if she hasn't taken any harass...

Graves is tanky enough to farm and harass, and he has burst, but I've found that there is a point that he cannot keep up with his opponent any longer, and will get nearly instakilled... Especially someone like Ahri, who has high mobility and has high, consistent damage.

Ezreal can keep up with passive laners and can trade well, and he has good repositioning skills... But his lack of CC and consistent burst makes him a VERY poor mid pick. He also suffers from the extreme squishiness syndrome...

Sivir is the best pick for mid, IMO, as she has that spell shield that just poops on comboers like Annie and Veigar... And she can farm/harass at the same time.

Coming in second, IMO, is Ashe, she can assist ganks with her permaslow and she can snowball better than other AD Carry mid picks. Her ultimate is also very useful for getting kills. She can also push the lane against hard pushers like Malzahar...

But she too suffers from squishiness syndrome...

If you are really set upon picking an AD mid, pick Talon... His niche is as a counterpick to almost every AP mid.

I've been on a losing spree, even when I'm dominate a game as cass, something happens that cause the game to spiral out of control, last game I hit god status with 8 kills straight before I did. The enemy team obviously stuck together while mine felt it was important to scatter. A team where ww is holding top, cass is destroying mid but bottom is having problems and allies except warwick and teemo sometimes giving up perfect ganks i put myself out to pull. One questionn, why the hell every teemo in this game dont communicate? do they think they are gods of death and dont need to come assist when asked and can kill all?

on Apr 23, 2012

Talon is hardcountered by armor. I used to have fun playing him, but he can't do anything to anyone with armor even if he has a last whisper.

on Apr 24, 2012

ran into Janook today on soloque lol.  Fun times.  Blitz (him) / ez vs taric (me) / graves.  It was a fun lane.. lots of action and close calls but terror taric won out pretty solidly

So its finally happened, while playing zil support someone said I was hacking... This yi depended on the bush to gank, but thats pointless when the support ie me, keeps those bushes warded and can see your every move. I kept dropping bombs on him while he was in the bush lol.

OMG_blackmage
So its finally happened, while playing zil support someone said I was hacking..

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you haven't hit level 30 yet, eh   Ah well, at least you got to have some fun with a dummy.

So I noticed something - I feel like a jerk if I take a silly character when I'm playing with pals.  Not in the slightest if I'm just doing an outright pug.  Also, holy crap has cheesy been moody lately.  Awhile back, he was running around as jungle lee sin like a boss, left and right.  Every time I bump into him nowadays, he's always feeling like he's utter rot.  He even played a game as shen with me n karl and appeared to just rage quit after like 3 deaths.  Bit of a bummer.  I absolutely detest rage quitters, especially if they are pals, but not in this case.  I really feel bad for the guy.  Not really sure how he can go from wrecking the jungle to feeling like crap most games.

Anywho... so, I've been going through "kinda of" a trolling phase.  I'm not like a jerk to anyone, but I simply pick whatever character I feel like picking and play wherever.  For instance, I've been playing twitch in any lane - and at that, just because I find it fun.  Not because I'm incredibly likely to carry the whole damn team.  But then again, there have just been some completely idiotic matchups happening.  Cheesy and I ended up paired with a 3 man team.  I'm twitch and cheesy goes lulu - we call bot.  So, they pick logical characters and a jungler.  Makes ok enough sense... the 3 seconds before lock, our jungler switches to janna.  So we have no jungler... which means I'm bot with lulu vs a soraka and some ranged ad carry.  So, with no threat of ganks, they can just do their own thing bot and I will never have a chance to roam really.  We have a tf, but he's only interested in ulting to help his pal - so its essentially me and cheesy in this crap situation with no assistance for like 20 min.  I make the most of it and farm, etc, but its just boring as well and pretty much completely takes the fun out of twitch (eg the roaming)... and of course soraka gets an oracles to make twitch even more useless in the lane.  Anyway, not super fun - all because this guy decides to go janna at the last second for reasons unknown.  I think they had fun getting a loss, though, so there's that.  Not much you can do when your teammates refuse to listen when you ask them to help out (the bastards had already finished top tower and just kept pushing there instead of assisting... great guys ).

I actually think my most fun setup was a game where ash and I (twitch) were bot.  We fought over cs here and there, but just pummeled the crap out of the enemy ranged ad anytime they tried to get cs.  This freed me up pretty quickly to start working the jungle and counter jungle as well.  Twitch with a traditional support and no jungle just ain't happening (outside of farming) against a support/ranged ad carry.

I've been reading quite a few articles lately over at sk-gaming.com in their playing to win series.  I strongly recommend as there are quite a few tips and tricks and things that I haven't even thought of after a thousand games or so.  To give you an idea or one of the more simple ones - it just involves the attack/move commands.  For instance, if you just click on a target, well, you will attack that target.  Let's say you click on a spot directly next to an enemy minion.  Well, you won't attack a damn thing until you reach that target.  That said, there's another attack command that will attack any enemy unit as soon as it comes in range.  Doesn't sound incredibly useful, no?  But consider where it is insanely useful.  You are chasing a low power enemy in and out of the bushes.  If you are just clicking normally, you will probably miss an autoattack depending on how they are juking.  If you use the attack anything nearby command, you will land a shot the second they are in range and come out of cover.  This means you get a hit for sure instead of perhaps blowing it.  It also reduces on the amount of time chasing in that situation.  Anyway, that's just one example and its highly logical.  Same thing goes for roaming and looking wards if you have an oracles.  This gets you instantly attacking the ward as soon as it comes into range instead of losing .5 seconds to see it and acquire it as a target.

Anyway, tons of good stuff there.  The thing I read most recently, however, was a discussion about the rune changes they made to buff ability power and magic pen while nerfing magic resist.  The author suggested that it quite probably could become even more likely or ap mids to pick up boots of mobility now to go and nuke top and bot lanes as a direct result of this change.  Imagine little vegiar running around a lot more early/mid and setting up ganks/nuking. It would certainly be more probable with dem boots.  Anyway, random thoughts done.

I find it ironic that your "F The Meta" troll picks are only fun to play as long as the rest of your team follows the meta and has a good team comp to help you out.
