Am I streaming

Well, I started a thread  back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike.  I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc.  Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.

Super fast background:  I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust.  Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me.  In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

 New Player tips

  • Play the tutorial.
  • Consider picking up the starter bundle.  It's 530 RP (that's about $4).  You get 8 champs unlocked, a 4 win IP boost and a 10 win XP boost.  It's a pretty good deal (used it recently on an alt account).  You can find it in the game store under bundles.
  • Riot gives you 400 RP as soon as you hit level 5.  It's enough to buy some skins, a boost, or a cheap character.
  • Learn to last hit!  Last hitting is simply landing the last hit on creeps.  If you last hit, you get gold for that kill.  The number of creeps you have killed is tracked in a value called CS.  You can see this number in the top right hand corner of the ui or by pressing tab.  Here's a really simple tutorial re: last hitting if you are brand new - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LheiRB76x5g
  • Read some guides on any character you want to try out.  The recommended builds (what you see when you go to a shop) are not optimal.  The guides include item suggestions and skill orders.  These are very useful in learning decent ways to build characters
  • Use the rune combiner to get level 3 runes prior to level 20 if you like.  You will need 375 IP.  Buy any tier 1 rune that costs 15 IP.  You need to purchase 25 of these.  Click on your rune page.  In the bottom right hand corner there is a button called the Rune Combiner.  If you place 5 runes in there, you can get a random rune that is 1 tier higher (eg if you have 5 tier 1 runes, you will get 1 random tier 2 rune.  Anyway, the math works out such that you spend 375 IP ( buy 25 tier 1 15 IP runes) and you get 1 completely random tier 3 rune.  Some of the quintessences are 2k IP, so if you luck out and get one of those, you just won the lottery.  You can always keep the random tier 2 rune if you end up with something good and don't want to trade it out yet.
  • Consider setting aside IP for tier 3 runes (available at level 20 and above).  You can't purchase them with real money - only IP.  Keep that in mind.

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts.  I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so).  We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not.  Caveat complete.

Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role.  You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not).  You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2).  In my case, I'm good at support and adc.  I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops.  Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important.  If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know...  Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it.  I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.

Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles.  Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby.  Say "adc pref."  Do this as soon as you hit the lobby.  Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it.  This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request.  If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref."  In my experience, you generally do not want to call support.  It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible.  If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you.  If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win.  You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.

Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo.  If you solo, you have to rely on yourself.  IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo.  Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good?  That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit.  The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3.  If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect.  When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles.  Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works.  Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles.  Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker.  For example, Bryff is a good mid.  If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered.  In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing.  Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game.  Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support.  If you want that, you can usually get it.

How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do.  And this is really what I do on a regular basis.  I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at.  For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads.  So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw.  I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ).  Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI.  Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc.  Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out.  Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself.  So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots).  If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game.  Then, do your best.  Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role.  And keep in mind what you need to work on.  For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth.  That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid.  The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team.  So, best to be ready for it.  Put your time in and practice roles.

One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked.  1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want.  Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT.  2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support.  It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc.  I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL.  People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I picked up Jax last night..  and Taric the other day.  I imagine I'll keep picking them up as the sales happen.

(too bad the pink leg warmers aren't standard issue...)

Also grabbed all of the runes that I can use at the moment...well, from an ADC standpoint at least - as much as I know about it anyway.

Switched over to Smartcast.  I hadn't been using it at all.  What a difference.  I'm sure it might have been in a newbie guide or post somewhere and I ignored it but I don't know why it's not "advertised" more.

Also have two others into the game.  We've been playing blind picks for the past week and having a lot of fun - and success.  You definitely get a crap shoot with random, blind picks (facepalm) but when you go in with 3 on Skype it takes the edge off.  I usually go Caitlyn with my buddy playing Nunu on bottom - then our other friend goes mid with someone he can sustain and hold his own with.  No jungler in our games (if we are lucky) and once we have laned for a bit and after we have pushed our pair off to base we get a gank or 2 in to help mid.  The game is so much fun   I just need 2 more at our skill level to roll with.  Would be so much better.

Out of curiosity - have you guys played HoN?  I really have no interest as there is so much to do with LoL but I saw an ad the other day and looked at their page.  Just wondering how similar the two games are.

Did - didn't really dig it.  I went from Demigod, to HoN, to LoL, back to Demigod, and then back to LoL.  LoL hooked me.  HoN never did.

Switched over to Smartcast.

Yah - it make a huge difference.  Some of the pros actually don't use it (some do ofc).  I like it though.

You know what I find really, really, really funny?  This vid

Director:  "k guys.  I need you to walk for about 2 minutes.  Then, when I say go, you need to run.  If you get into it, go ahead and jump around corners and stuff.  Ocelot - make sure you wear your scarf.  We think it will look great while you run.  I still haven't decided if we'll have it fall off while you run or not, though."

Hotshottgg:  "so, why are we running?"

Director:  "stfu and run."

pacov:  "Wangchuck."

Bravo season 3 launch video.  Bravo.

also - huge queue time right now... Might be a good idea to patch and start logging in when you get a chance in case it persists.

Here's the origin of Wangchuck btw.

Well, those kids are nowhere near where they needed to be.

They probably should've gone in through the front entrance..  but I suppose the parking lot dictates that a bit.

hopefully not much need to go on about this, but dax ran his mouth a little in a game where we were obviously winning pretty hard.  I addressed him talking in all chat immediately to end that and apologized to the other team and to cow personally.  I think it goes without saying going forward - but if we kill like 3 people when we are already up like 8 kills or w/e, "hahahah" in all chat is not good.  Dax apologized and didn't mean anything by it... and realizes it was inappropriate.  Anyway, best I can do is to address stuff like that immediately.  Hopefully no hard feelings.  Thanks for all the games tonight.

I apologized to nades afterwards (that was who the laugh was for...) it was just absurd how he went from 100% to 33% after one of your ults...

It was one of those moments where you suddenly realize that what you had just said was better left unsaid because in the current context it seems far worse than intended.

and for that, I am sorry.

I am rather impulsive when it comes to chat messages, and I type before I think.

-EDIT-

I also killed nades while he was AFK...

I think it should be a house rule that upon noticing an AFK player, the person who noticed it should pause immediately. I felt bad about that one too...

well, that one is a little tricky and harder to make a rule about.  If a guy is clearly afk for like 20 sec, then sure its best to pause it if the enemy team is unaware.  If we are talking a few seconds, a guy could actually be trying to set something up.  I don't know that folks do that crap often, but I try to bait things like that in top lane from time to time.  Anyway, if you really think someone is afk, then yeah - we should pause the game.  If you aren't sure (eg guy stands in same place for like 3-4 seconds total), then I'd likely go for a kill.  Still really hard to make a rule other than if you think someone is afk - pause if you can do so quickly.  If we get into a situation where someone starts faking afk a bit (eg what you should do from time to time as wukong for instance), then we'd revisit the concept.

Also - pacov is a moody fuck tonight.  Sorry for my general bitchiness.  Night all.

Man, I forgot how tough solo queue could be.  I went 3-2 in my first 5 ranked games, but my mids just wouldn't stop getting crushed.  4 out of 5 games their mids just destroyed our mids.  This included a 9-1 ryze and a 14-2 yi (plus a Kass that started 6-0).  As a jungler, I really really dont like it when our mid feeds their mid early.

My first game I wasn't able to jungle because a Shaco demanded it and took Revive  and then the ADC I supporting was asking questions like "Does frost shot stack with red buff".  Luckily, both their bots were terrible, so we were able to win that one.

Fortify on Shen.  I did some serious bait jobs back then, got myself a quad with the splash damage tower occasionally.

Helloooooooooooo.  Some of you may have noticed I haven't played in a while.  That usually means I'm playing some other game.  Here's my plug.

Wished D3 was better? Don't like buying games (like FtP models like LoL)? Want to create weird builds that work, like a warrior shooting shit with wands instead of sword / board? Want a large community? Endgame, pvp, this game is awesome, no gold for gold farmers, materia system from FFVII, skill path from FFX that 1300+ nodes, etc?

Try out Path of Exile. Pretty fun. Open beta just started this week and has more players than D3. http://www.pathofexile.com/

on Feb 03, 2013

that one was on my radar - didn't know it hit open beta.  Going to give it a look today - pacov in game.

on Feb 03, 2013

it's a pretty fun game.  Played for about an hour and then was kicked off the server (maintenance maybe?).  Anyway, done for now.  Tried out the witch.  I think it will be a really fun game though.

Stupid computers.

It looks like my network adapter decided to kill itself.  Turned the computer on this morning, no internet (my laptop connected just fine).  Tried to fix stuff, but the Device Manager couldn't even find any hardware related to the network.  No network adapters or interface controllers or anything.  Tried to reinstall drivers, but the driver installer couldn't find the device to install for.  After messing around with my BIOS a bit, I decided that the onboard adapter had just died.  So I went to Best Buy to try and buy one real quick, but naturally they don't sell such things.  So I'm stuck using some USB wireless adapter for now.  We will see how that goes.

I'm actually a bit worried that my whole motherboard is in the process of dying.  About 3 times yesterday my mouse would just lock up and not do anything for a while.  I thought it might be a mouse thing, but today it locked out and didn't recover, and the keyboard wouldn't work either.  If you combine that with the network adapter dying, I'm a bit worried.

i am completely cursed in ranked.    I get to play mid.  The guy I'm playing against at mid dc's at the start of the game and is gone for like 15 min of the game.  I force their jungle to cover mid for like 10 minutes.  I gank for my non warding bot over and over.  They manage to feed over and over.  Our jungle doesn't ever take adv of me keeping their jungle at mid... no fucking idea what he's doing.  So, no ward feed bot, dumb jungler, and a missing player on the enemy team... we lose.  amazing.

on Feb 03, 2013

and another loss... this time we had a ww on the enemy team that tried to flash initiate multiple times with no ult (did it once at level 3)... support warded a little more this game at least.  Glad to say I didn't play as well, but ah well.

i watched that game - though i do think your bot lane was the biggest problem, there were other issues.

Beginning of the game:

1- the invasion call was a good one, so it was good that you called that out

2- obviously you were fine the first few minutes, got plenty of CS, etc

3- your bot lane decided to help Udyr at blue, which put them way behind in lane because they were 30-45 seconds late or so. Bad, but not an insurmountable thing (esp compared to a mid who DC's level 2).

4- Udyr wasn't really very comfortable with the invade - he wasn't sure when to smite/etc and i know Udyr is pretty blue-reliant for his very first clear, it may have thrown him off of his pace to start red, which is why he didn't have a significant advantage over Hec not being a jungler.

After this is where things started to go wrong.

Generally, the jungler isn't that strong... but since he leached a lot of gold + EXP, he was really more of like a "super" mid, because he got mid CS + EXP, in addition to starting blue buff. He also caught you around his red buff at the 6 minute mark or so? So he did have that early kill.

Your bot lane, Soraka in particular, cannot do anything to prevent Hec from slaughtering them under tower, esp when Hec was mid-Hec. She did buy/use wards: 7 green, 1 pink, and she did have a sightstone (which doesn't count to that 7). Just she couldn't do anything to stop Hec. Stuff like not warding your blue towards the end of the game really didn't "lose" the game for your team, even though that is probably what she should have done.

Hec's first gank is def when things started to go awry, when you + Udyr (who was also having lag issues), went down to 4v3 bot lane that first time. Hec was basically unkillable, Soraka couldn't do anything, and Sona's ult hit both you and Udyr when you guys went in.

Their bot lane was warded (since you were counter-ganking their gank, which was the right thing to do).

i couldn't say exactly 100% what went wrong there - other than the fact that Soraka can't do anything. Udyr may have bear-stanced the wrong target, or whatever. Game was hardly over though.

Later, When Malz reconnected, he came back to lane level 2, while you were level 9. Maybe you were just trying to be nice, but you were letting him CS and everything instead of just trying to kill him outright. But since the game wasn't going great, killing him was def the best decision.

Later on, you went bot lane for a gank, did okay, did damage, all was good. However, you started to recall (with full hp + mana), and then Hec counter-ganked. Even though you saw him coming, you decided to finish your recall and that is what ended up giving Hec another 3 kills. After that, the opposing team was all under 20% hp - you could have killed them instead with just a single Q.

Plus, the enemy Nasus got pretty strong - Garen struggled against him.

7/3/11 - 182 v 5/7/3 - 148.

Obviously, you did phenomenally mid lane with your CS (241).

Anyway, though your bot lane certainly lost the game for you guys, more than anything else. That evaluation is a fair one. That said, i think there was a few things could you have done that could have drawn the game out a lot longer (even though, being realistic, Nasus would have killed you all anyway).

You've def had a bad string of luck with ranked games and i hope that it starts working out better for you.

Our jungle doesn't ever take adv of me keeping their jungle at mid... no fucking idea what he's doing.

he was farming both jungles - 125 CS as a jungler compared to fed Hec's 122. He also died bot lane a lot of times (8 altogether).

Wow I just had my best Cait game yet.  21-0-5  Obviously I was fed...and some players made bad decisions like standing too close to their tower with one bar left...  but what are you going to do?  The game seems to come down to who makes the biggest or most bad decisions.  I don't think I've been so decked out by 14 though.  I had support Nunu with me which was huge...  so much fun.

Question:  do replays work?  I downloaded the file and have recorded a few matches..but when I try to play them i get a message that I am using a newer version of the client, etc...  I found some posts that tell me to "Repair" the replay but then they won't be in spectate mode.  Is there something else I can try or should be doing?

Also - if you guys get stuck with 9 sometime and I am on I'll be more than happy to jump into a house game.  I still need to learn a lot but i think I can manage well enough with the few champs that i play.  Generally Cait/Ashe or possibly Taric (although I haven't had much love for him yet).  Yi/Katarina as a second tier..  Malphite (I know...he's banned).  If anyone has a suggestion for another to pick up next that would round matches out I will pick them up.  I'm open to any role and feedback.
